I stretched with Edward over a course of several weeks. As a competitive runner I need to be on top of my game. I came to him being tight and worn out. His techniques helped rejuvenated me quickly. I felt like a new person each time afterwards; I was more loose and relaxed. The next day my running was stronger, faster, and I had more spring in my step. You don't have to be an athlete to reap the health benefits from his stretching methods. You will feel better! -Michael Corbett VP Excelsior Beverages

I can attest to Emily’s skill as a Reiki master. When my partner was in the hospital in the final stages of a terminal illness, Emily would come to the hospital to perform her techniques on him. The difference before and after was astounding. You could see the energy emanating from his eyes when she was finished and his overall health and energy levels were so much greater for days after. I would whole-heartedly recommend Emily’s abilities in this area.

Alison is a highly learned yogini, providing high quality, professional instruction and training for attaining personal health and well-being. She has a patient and caring approach, guiding through beginner steps and stumbles with encouragement, adapting modifications to accommodate specific needs. Through step by step, her practice helps you build discipline, strength and confidence as you see results accumulating. In addition to Yoga training, Alison incorporates deeply nourishing meditation practice as part of the method. This brings a tranquil mind-body alignment to each session, reinforcing the accomplishments and dedicating to continued self-discovery and improvement. A wonderful aspect of Alison's approach is the attentiveness to the individual needs, which is exemplified by her listening, questioning and understanding, then performing research on her own time, and incorporating specific approaches to address the needs. This is truly personalized care driven by a passion to help and heal.

I've had sooo many massage therapists and masseuses for the last 20 years and Steve is a rare breed IMO. I have chronic pain issues that are so bad now just walking to a massage spa is daunting. So I thought I'd try someone who could come to my house as I would be more relaxed. First of all, his folding bed was more comfortable than some spas! Secondly, and most importantly, he asked what ailed me and he applied soft pressure sometimes and stronger pressure other times (which is unusual because most massages are either/or). He explains why you have tension in certain areas of the body as a direct result of other areas in the body that you carry similar/mirroring tension (a compensating effect) which made a lot of sense to me. Physical therapists have touched on this phenomenon (no pun intended) but never delved into it as deeply & logically. Very helpful because it adds to your awareness of how you carry yourself (out of habit & circumstance) & your posture & how all these things considered affect your overall physical health (which can even affect your mental health/spirit!). So Steve's a keeper! I can't recommend him highly enough (& can't wait for my next session, I feel worlds better!)!

I first went to see Dr. Klemt almost 2 months ago. I've been struggling with an unusual skin condition for about 6 years. I had been to 3 dermatologists and none of them could figure out that the problem was more than superficial. During my first treatment with Dr. Klemt he was very attentive and was able to find the root of the problem. He was thorough in his explanation of my case and informed me of what needed to be done to resolve my condition including acupuncture, an herbal prescription and dietary advice. I currently go to him on a weekly basis because I finally found someone that has made a difference. He is extremely knowledgeable and will definitely find a way to resolve and help you to understand your health concerns.

You know how some people just have that healing touch? Well Ana Yael has it. Her approach is holistic and she has a lot of knowledge about spirituality from different perspectives and philosophies. Just talking with her is already healing itself. I tried few of the techniques she does - I was doing frequency therapy with plasma machine when working on problems with allergies. I also did complete organ boost (frequency healing for main five organs), loved that. I did reiki as well, mostly for my low energy levels. She is a very strong channel and her energy is rejuvenating. Every six to eight months I recommend doing frequency body analysis because you see everything what is happening in body, even before it is manifested on physical level. Amazing technology. Ana Yael is flexible - I did sessions with her in 3 elements Healing Arts centre in Bayside and both at my home address.

I have been working with Baraka for over a year and she has greatly facilitated me in my journey toward my personal truths. I consider her miraculous. She is incredibly open minded, warm, and studious. I am thankful for her unique perspective and abilities that have helped me claim a fuller, more accurate picture of my true self, such as: her eye for the multiple layers within life, her unique understanding of mental health and illness, her dedication to women, and last but not least, her wonderful lightheartedness. She is a gentle, yet courageous advocate for transformation, and I am deeply grateful to work with her.

I must admit that I was skeptical about the healing properties associated with Reiki. But I must say that the experience and attentiveness of Mrs. Verley was far beyond my expectations. I felt the rigors and stressful factors of the day being lifted. I experienced a sense of calm that was indescribable. The environment, the scents in the air, the comfort of the music all contributed to a holistic experience which made me decide to start my day off with a session instead of at its end. I highly recommend Mrs. Verley to anyone who wishes to experience a sense of peace and healing. It's definitely changed my life.

It is no exaggeration to say that Dr. Millie saved my life. I had been having severe abdominal pain and intense hormonal symptoms for as long as I could remember and had seen countless doctors over the years who didn't know what to do with me. I was finally diagnosed with SIBO early last year by a gastroenterologist but even she didn't know how to help me and gave me NO clue as to what would truly be involved to get me better. I was completely hopeless, exhausted, and in nearly constant pain when I was finally referred to Dr. Millie by a One Medical doctor for her expertise as a nutritionist. And an nutrition expert, she absolutely is, but she is so much more. Not only have I not had ANY pain in months, but Dr. Millie has taught me so much about food, about my body and even about my inner self. I won't lie, her methods (and I believe you'll find this with any natural/holistic practitioner) are not for the faint of heart - it is HARD work doing things naturally and it is a big investment in both time and money. There are no quick fixes but that means the improvements you make are lasting. Dr. Millie doesn't just help your physical pain go away and she doesn't want you to just feel fine or okay - she wants you to be your absolute healthiest, best, most energetic self inside and out and she wants you to feel that way for the rest of your life. With her, nothing is untreatable and no ache or pain however small is something you should have to live with. Plus she is there with you every step of the way and is always available at any time to answer questions or give a little spiritual/emotional guidance as needed. She is kind and patient and knows what you need and when you need it both physically and emotionally and will never push you beyond what you can handle. She doesn't want to limit your life in any way - she wants to expand it. She has not only helped me to be pain free, but is helping me with all aspects of my physical and mental health, including my hormonal issues, skin problems, anxiety, brain fog, heartburn and more. I cannot imagine any health problem she wouldn't be able to solve. Most importantly, she treats the cause and not just the symptoms (and without drugs that can only cause worse problems later on) and with that, sets you up for a lifetime of health. I cannot recommend or thank Dr. Millie enough! She has completely changed my life.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

      • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
      • Nutritional medicine
      • Botanical medicine
      • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
      • Hygiene
      • Counseling
      • Minor surgery
      • Homeopathy
      • Acupuncture
      • Intravenous and injection therapy
      • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

      Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

      Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

      • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
        • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
      • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
        • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
        • Do I need a referral?
        • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
        • What will the co-pay be?
        • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
      • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.
