Had a gas line leak found by pgw, so I had subzero come out for the repair. Came out right away which is very important and the quote given was great. Not only did Benny fix the leaking pipe but also performed a entire gas leak inspection in my basement. Before you get a quote anywhere else be sure to keep subzero on top of the list

Excellent job, from start to finish, on a clothes dryer repair. Scheduled the work late Thurs evening for 10 am Fri. Arrived on time, identified the problem, was able to get the correct part from a local supplier, installed and fixed. Provided good repair or replace advice. Also, trouble-shot the interior dryer light and emailed me a link to the correct bulb.

A few weeks ago, on what at the time was the "coldest day of the year" our furnace wouldn't engage; as it had lost all communication with our thermostat. As my wife and I recently moved to the area, we were unsure of whom to call.... I was able to reach Joe from Olsen Heating & Cooling ((862)254-0894) around 6PM on a Friday evening and he was at our house WITHIN THE HOUR. Joe was courteous (he even put booties on before coming in our house to keep our rugs clean), very knowledgeable, and great to work with. In about 80 minutes time, Joe not only had our system back online but also performed an overdue annual maintenance on our furnace; all for a very fair/reasonable price. It's nice knowing that their are great local companies (Sand Shore Dr.) that can help when you need them most. Strongly recommended!

We bought our home in Fountain Hill, PA in Sept. of 2015. When the colder months came, we noticed our heat not working. Ty's business card was on the furnace, so we called. He came in, accessed, quoted and fixed the problem within an hour. We have called him back for plumbing issues as well as radon issues. He is the go to man for the Lehigh Valley. His prices and his work are top of the line. We hold his card close to us, and don't panic if we have an issue. We know who we are calling. Tom Weigel & The Gray Family

Tony came the very next day. Replaced heater parts and Hot Tub was up and running when I came home from work. I did not have to use a Vacation Day to sit home and wait. Very fair price. I will call him for all my Hot Tub parts and repair. Thank you!

John Air completed the installation and startup of my new Goodman AC and Furnace. The entire process of dealing with John was exemplary. He was easily reachable through the Thumbtack website/app via chat, and then was reachable prior to the service appointment. He was on time and came prepared with all necessary equipment and tools. He was knowledgeable and professional and completed the work quickly and efficiently. He tried to round down on the number of service hours, but I insisted that he round up and even included a large tip for him because the experience was, by far, the best home contractor experience I've had. I own a rental property and often need contractors to service appliances, etc. I am extremely happy with the entire process with Thumbtack (way better than Home Advisor and Angies List, that spam you with useless emails and phone calls from big-name, expensive contractors. John's hourly labor rate was very reasonable. I give him 5+ stars.

Needed a plumber fast to repair a leak in my copper supply line going to my kitchen faucet. Doug responded quickly with a fair price. Doug kept me updated along the way prior to his arriving and during the install since I was not able to be there. Doug worked quickly and efficiently to resolve the leak and get us back and running again. I would definitely recommend him and will be sure to call Comfort for all my future needs.

I was weary about using this relatively new company to install a new gas furnace that I had purchased but their price was extremely competitive and my wife wanted to give them a shot. To my surprise, Eva home services delivered a quality install. West had to come back out once when we had the new gas line connected but overall it was a smooth process. The installation took only 2 days. Thank you Tony and West and the other guy, I forget his name....

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace serviced?

When your furnace isn’t regularly serviced it can operate less efficiently. This increases your energy bills and also prevents your furnace from keeping your home as warm as you like. Keep your furnace properly maintained with regular service. The national average furnace service cost is between $60 and $80. Companies may offer tuneup specials that cover all the necessary testing, tightening, measuring and cleaning to keep your equipment running at top efficiency. If you have a newer system, furnace service costs may be covered by your warranty. Outside of warranty, a basic tuneup might start at $58 and a more advanced maintenance cleaning could be over $120. Here are some signs your furnace may need service:

  • The furnace has stopped functioning entirely.
  • The temperature cannot be regulated.
  • Rooms in the home are either too hot or too cold.
  • The heated air coming from the furnace smells like gas.
  • The thermostat isn’t working.
  • Strange noises are coming from the furnace.
