I am an absentee landlord and needed a new water heater for a house in Sunnyside. Clear and timely communication is very important for me when hiring contractors. Edward responded to my calls very quickly, gave me complete information and arranged appointments with my tenant to bid and then perform the job. He used top quality materials and did a great job at a fair price. I will use him again for my plumbing needs.

Greivin is a very reliable, honest and responsive contractor who did a great job at repainting our house. I offered him the job after he submitted the best bid among 4 contractors to paint my 1340 sq feet house in Hoboken. My walls were painted in dark colors with different rooms having different colors and we were shifting to all white - he did a great job that needed four coats and also agreed to repair our wooden floor in a small corner for no extra cost. He has done a great and timely job - in a condo building, he did the job with no disturbance to neighbors. Highly recommended.

Glenn has seriously turned out to be the absolute best contractor that I have ever worked with! Ive had the opportunity to work with several others, both at my homes and at my businesses. A few contractors have been good, doing nice work for a fair price, but they were either too slow, too unreliable, or just couldn’t come up with creative ways to do things that were needed. Glenn completely remodeled a new salon for me, and built a custom color bar shelf, front desk, reclaimed beam stylist counter, and retail shelves. He worked with my budget, helping me make decisions based on the priorities, and was extremely friendly, professional, and reliable every step of the way. He went above and beyond, even facetiming with me or communicating with my husband when I was under the weather and couldn’t make it to the job site. I highly recommend him for any project, and will be using his services for every future project that I have, both in business and my home.

Mr Roman has been one of the best contractors I've found on this app! After going through three plumbers he finally diagnosed the problem and completely fixed it so that the sewer ejector system is working and no more flooding problems. He did the work in a day, repaired any holes in the Sheetrock so that it looks brand new and cleaned up after his work. I hired him to solve some other problems that other plumbers had given up on and he tackled the jobs. I will consider him my go to call whenever I need help on my house from now on!

My experience with contractors, including this company, is that you have to have patience. When a job has multiple areas of concentration (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc.), there may be different people doing each service; which means that everything is dependent upon each person doing their service in a timely manner, otherwise possible delays. Also, most contractors have multiple job sites where their people are rotated where needed. Since no one can predict a problem will occur, this also causes delays in getting a project completed. All of this is the nature of the job. As I mentioned before, try to have patience. Renovation projects can be frustrating and sometimes upsetting; but if everything is done correctly with minimal errors, the most important thing is that you are happy with the skills provided and the quality of the work completed.

Where do I begin? What started out as what I thought to be a small project for putting my house on the market turned in to be a much larger project than I thought and thank God I had Jon and his men there to do this for me. My house is nearly 30 years old and time and raising kids get in the way of doing things that the house needs and you end up putting it off and putting it off until you can't do it anymore so what was small did turn into something large, but Jon was patient with me he took the time to explain things to me he made sure I understood what was going on and he went way beyond what was expected and it was very reasonable prices. He came in at first with the two-man crew and himself , Brian who he calls " chief ",( you'd have to ask him why ) and Danny . Brian was here just one day he repainted my family room and I had done it myself at first and he did it and made it look fresh and new . He did a great job for the one day that he was here. but Danny took on the rest of this monstrously Big house and worked his magic. Too bad I didn't think about taking pictures before but my after pictures came out absolutely great. He worked tirelessly and professionally and he did a fabulous job throughout my whole house fixing anything I needed done and doing the rest of the painting that I actually needed doing that I never thought really needed it at first . But when he was done with that and most of the projects in my house it made me realize all this work had to be done and it was done and a very reasonable price. All the work that was done, The price I would've had to pay probably would have been almost double . But Jon worked with me and is still working with me on this and when I move to my new house I will have him send Danny to do projects for me there. I know there are other contractors on this site and I'm sure they do great work too, but I know I got great work from Jon with Danny doing the actual work with those magical hands of his. I have a condition called scoliosis which affects my back and I'm very limited in what I can do at this point. but Jon has been very kind and so has Danny and Jon told Danny you do anything she needs. And Danny has done just that. they worked here steadily for about a month and I kind of miss Danny coming in every morning and I have his water ready for him for the day and his cup of coffee with two sugars and half-and Half, and Jon coming back maybe around mid day or so and looking around and seeing how everything is going. So if you want to make sure the job is done right these are the guys for you to contact I had a great experience with them and I will continue to use The services. I Will be sending pictures of the outcome of the house but right now I just want to get this review in for him

Based on what I am going to say - one might think I am a friend of the contractor (Shawn) - let me assure you that I did not know Shawn before meeting him through Thumbtack asking him to come to my home to give me an estimate on finishing my basement. I have had horrible experiences with contractors in the past and sadly I expected this project to be no different. Much to my SHOCK it was an entirely different experience working with Shawn. For starters, I received 6 quotes on finishing my basement and Shawn had one of the lowest (fairest) price estimates. Two of my estimates were almost double the price of what Shawn's was. Shawn even suggested we frame the walls slightly differently since they were not load bearing and he checked with my township to make sure they would approve the slight difference and that alone saved me $1,000. Not one other contractor suggested this. Several contractors told me that my basement would take at least 3 months or so to finish and Shawn had it done - inspected and all in about 3 weeks of work time. He was always responsive to my emails/texts/calls to him, he showed up every single day that he said that he would and showed up on time (8 am). This even included showing up when it snowed and was below freezing weather. He worked a full day only taking a brief (sometimes only 30 mins) lunch (I've had other contractors who disappeared for hours during 'lunch'), and he cleaned up whatever mess he made as he was leaving each day - literally sweeping/mopping his way out of my front door. He was friendly, courteous, caring, professional - AND he did a fantastic job. My basement looks absolutely amazing. It was completely unfinished and its hard to believe that by looking at it now. I was so pleasantly surprised to have such a positive experience and pay a fair price and have my basement turn out amazing. I would recommend Shawn without any hesitation. He even noticed my tire was flat one day as he was entering my home and he filled it up with air for me. I truly can not say anything negative about the experience at all. Positive experience in every single way - and a great final product.

First of all Galaxy 1 home improvement were excellent!! I had a bad experience with a contractor in the past and I was looking for someone to do my kitchen but hesitate with the contractors I got an estimate from. Either their price was not what I could afford or their paperwork was not correct for what the coop wanted. Mr. Gary Singh was pleasant, respectful & professional from the first time we met and had all correct paperwork. Mr. Gary kept good on what he plan to do with my kitchen & the rest of my place. Him and the guys that worked on my place are trustworthy, respectful and professional. I recommend him and his crew 100%.

Dave completely redid my home in Manasquan taking it down to the four exterior walls and adding a 2nd floor in 2004. After Sandy wipeout my first floor I called Dave and he was there in less then a day. He then completely redid my first floor. We are now getting ready to elevate our home and our General Contractor again is Dave. I would not have anyone else work on it. He and his crew are excellent craftsmen and can be trusted with anything left in your home.

I hired ER Fine Homes for a large painting project for the interior of my home. It was a great pleasure working with the owner Dan and I felt it necessary to take time to write this review because of his outstanding work. Dan is a true pleasure to work with because he is not only professional but he always promptly replies to your communication and carefully listens to your needs and or any concerns. Antonio, his painting supervisor, and the team of painters came to my home everyday for over 3 weeks and they were always on time, courteous, neat, respectful and did fantastic work with great attention to detail. I am so pleased with the work completed by ER Fine Homes we have already decided to hire them again for several additional upcoming general contracting projects. I would highly recommend this company-you will love them!!

I am a interior designer in New York. I hired Innovators to renovate a one bedroom for a client in a top co-op building in NYC. The building had strict guidelines for any alterations. Edward and his crew were very careful to follow the building regulations and rules which is very important when working on many of the buildings in NY. Innovators has a great pull of skilled workmen and sub contractors. Many of his workers are multi-skilled and professional. We are at the end of the renovations and are please with the outcome. We will use Innovators again in future projects. Giselle Ulmo Giselle Ulmo Design

I know how frustrating it can be looking for a reliable contractor when all you have to go on are these reviews. But that's just how I chose Scott's Cabinet Design in Jackson and I couldn't have been more pleased with the results! I found Scott to be very professional, reliable, reasonably priced, clean and conscientious. I wanted Scott to create a moden farmhouse kitchen and that's exactly what I got! My kitchen looks like it came right out of a magazine! I know choosing a contractor who you can trust to transform your home can be a daunting task, but you wont regret choosing Scott. I love my new kitchen and the fact that I had no issues with this remodel start to finish!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

For more on where to start when remodeling a bathroom check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
