My air conditioner stopped working yesterday. I put in my request in Thumbtack and in less than an hour Kathy had sent me an email with a quote! And after reading the reviews I was more than impressed enough to give Action Air a shot. Kathy sounded like a nice lady. She said Sam would be able to come out and he was there an hour or so after that! I was so surprised since even with PSEG unless it's an emergency you would probably have had to wait till Monday. Sam was amazing! He was able to diagnose the problem within 5 minutes. Even was able to reproduce how the fuse was blowing out cause of a bad controller/motherboard. He got the new piece Monday morning and then later in the day installed it. It's working again without missing a beat. No other issues! I am impressed he got it exactly right. It is hard to get people to do good quality work these days at fair prices and Action Air was more than fair and Sam was more than qualified and good! Such a nice and smart guy and easy enough to understand if you're willing to listen! Thank you Kathy and god bless you Sam!

He came to repair our very noisy air conditioner...he took the whole thing apart and finally he, we, realized it was the plastic cover. He sealed it well and we are now cool and quiet! Very nice, honest, personable young man. Will recommend him and use him again.

Dexter is very professional and thorough. I had another electrician working in my space, but his work was not satisfactory and I used Thumbtack to get a new electrician. Dexter came to see my job and made some solid recommendations. I hired him and he went above and beyond in my opinion to get the job done. He had to redo a lot of the work of my previous electrician, as many things were wired incorrectly, and not done to code. He installed a grounding rod, rewired 4 air conditioners, wired almost 40 outlets, installed lighting, exit signs, fans, new electrical panels... The list goes on. He got my space up to code. I 110% recommend Dexworks, for your electrical needs. He is dedicated, committed and is very detail oriented.

Central air conditioner on the roof was not working. They showed up the same day as promised. Fixed the problem and the price was reasonable, particularly when considering how HVAC contractors can be huge rip-offs

I have nothing but great things to say about Andy and his team. They have done two jobs for me in the last two weeks and have done the jobs well. First job was to come and do an annual central air tune up. The second job was to acid wash my Mitsubishi a/c unit which had accumulated mold. In addition, Andy found some minor issues with the central a/c units and addressed immediately on the spot. He did such a great job that my central air conditioning unit runs now so smooth I can barely hear that it is on. I have had several other technicians come over the years and not one of them did as much as Andy and his team. Also Andy's fees are very reasonable and not out of left field like some techs I have used in the past. Plus, he guarantees all of his work. Most techs don't even mention this because of their unwillingness to take responsibility if something goes wrong later on. I highly recommend Windward HVAC and will not hesitate to use them again. Thanks Andy!!!!!!

I cannot say enough good things about Anthony. He went above and beyond the call of duty to help me resolve an issue with a broken Air Conditioner while I was out of the country and had airbnb guests. If it were not for him, I could not have resolved the issue. The quality of his work was exceptional and I know from firsthand experience as I have at times worked as a Handyman myself. Hire Anthony without hesitation.

There aren't enough stars to give appliance pros. Unbelievable service. Very reasonable pricing and excellent customer service. Wow wow wow. Thats all i have to say. Got estimates from other places and they told me that i would have to replace my whole system. Ben came down and said he would be able to fix it no problem. Saved me thousands. Fixed my heating and air conditioning.I would strongly recommended appliance pros.

Elmer responded quickly -same day. He was very professional, knowledgeable, courteous and reasonable priced. He came well equipped with the specific tools needed and the "know how" for the job requested- (Air dryer vent/hook up/clean out) and even offered options to meet our needs and budget. I will certainly be calling him again in the future and highly recommend.

I originally called P&M mechanical because I was having a problem with one of my air conditioners, he diagnosed my problem and repaired it at a very reasonable price. Weeks later I was having problems with my second unit and decided to replace it after receiving quotes from a number of companies I decided again to go with P&M mechanical, because of his work ethics and professionalism he replaced my air conditioner the next day. Using P&M Mechanical was one of the best decisions I have made.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
