Anna performed interior design and architectural planning for my Brooklyn residence. She was fantastic. She has an artist's eye and an architect's skill. Her rates were extremely reasonable. She was professional, courteous and timely with her work. Highly recommend.

Most Architects I worked with in the past take long time to finish the job. Amy was on top of it from the beginning. I needed good quality and time was of the essence. The job was done in timely manner.

I contacted Manny from Kenneth Irving Architect via Thumbtack. He was one of several architects who responded to my request. Of all of them, he was the only one to offer a free in person consultation to look at the scope of the work to be performed. He promptly got back to me with a quote within a day. He scheduled to return a few days later to perform the necessary measurements. The day before he came, I discovered that I now needed an additional room added to the project. I informed Manny, and he graciously drew up a new proposal with the new work included. He came by on schedule, and did all measurements. Within a week I had all drawings, documents, and applications needed for my renovation project. My experience with Manny was very pleasant, everything went smoothly and his work was done in a very timely manner. Glad I hired Manny for the job, and would highly recommend to others.

Marcello did the lobby renovation for our building. The building is a old loft conversion with beautiful iron staircase. Unfortunately, the stair case was enclosed in drywall and the ceilings were dropped to less than 8 foot high. Marcello restored the original 13 foot ceiling, exposed the stairs and beautiful marble from 1905, and helped secure the approval from DOB to move the fire door, the last one is not an easy task. We are very happy with the work.

This was the first time I had to use an architect for a residential addition. I was not sure what to expect. My friend recommended Oscar (OMJ Design). First I must say that he and his staff were very professional. They explained the construction process in detail. I know that I must of ask them more than 1,000,000 questions but they were happy to answer them. If you are thinking of hiring him, don't think twice. You won't regret it. I would definitely use them again.

I own a three family residence in Staten Island. I had violations on my property from a previous owner that i would literally loose sleep over. In order to dismiss these violations, i had to legalize my Certificate of Occupancy. I was miraculously referred to them by a colleague of mine. Calling Morali Architects was the best thing i did. Withing a year, i had no more violations and an amended Certificate of Occupancy. They obtained my city approval fast and were extremely responsive and customer friendly. They also gave us design tips for our interior layout and fixtures to improve the quality of my property. I would highly recommend Morali for any property owner.

It was a pleasure to work with 43hundred architects. Mrs Nadine and Ms Magda are both, detail oriented, thoughtful, reliable and incredibly talented. Best costumer service! We hired them for a remodeling of our new house. They provided not only the professional design and concepts but also willingness to listen with patience and courtesy. I will definitely recommend them to family and friends!

Paul helped us rebuild my mother's house after hurricane Sandy. Out of all of the people we hired, Paul was the most attentive and responsive to our needs, from getting through the Building permit process to communicating with the contractors and surveyors, he always made things progress to the next phase quicker. His communication with us and his patient explanations often put us at ease when we were becoming fed up with the build. You'll be doing yourself a great service by hiring Paul Walter for your projects.

Wow, where do I begin.. so we met Gary back in the spring of 2013 when he renovated our house in Brooklyn. He came highly recommended by my uncle Frank (a very hard man to please), so I knew he was the right guy to hire. After doing an amazing job on that project (a major renovation with a crumbling house built in 1911) and numerous small projects, we hired his company to build us a house from scratch. Being that Gary is also a licensed real estate broker, the whole process was made easy from finding a piece of land to selling our existing house, to setting us up with a great architect (thank you Peter Calvanico) and so on. From the day we broke ground to completion (except landscaping), he had us in our new house in just under 10 weeks! I can't tell you how happy we are with the finished product, thanks to all the great design ideas Gary gave me (thank goodness because I can never make a decision.. lol). It still hasn't sunk in that this is my home.. i'm in love! Thank you Gary, Louis, Anthony, and the rest of the crew for all of your hard work! P.S. you were right about adding all of the extra trim work.. it really makes the house pop!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
