What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I now listen only to POP/HIP radio stations because those genres are the most requested and are constantly changing, so I must be prepared. I also review Billboard top requests for updates, as well as for other genreÃÂs such as country.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I had my own personal upscale karaoke machine, and was asked if I would bring my machine to a party in order to create some entertainment. Through word of mouth, I began to get more and more requests, and was offered payment for the service. The next thing I knew, I was being asked to provide DJ services, which required a major investment. As the popularity of what I could do continued to rise, I realized that there was a demand for my service, and since it was something that I truly enjoyed, the decision to become professional was an easy one.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
We recently hosted a karaoke/dance party for a community, and although they do really love to sing (in groups), they have difficulty in knowing which songs to select. We therefore selected some songs for them, and as usual, there were more singers than mics on stage, so they shared them. Meanwhile, there was a group of dancers who also liked our song selections, and would organize some line dancing to the songs that the singers were performing. The entire room was involved, and for us, it was awesome. We also booked 3 more jobs before the night was over.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Do not wait until the last minute to book the DJ you want. If you wait until the last minute, the highly requested DJÃÂs will most likely already be booked, and you may not be satisfied with the DJ you ultimately book. Special requests are much easier accommodated when ample time is provided for the DJ to prepare. Provide special song requests, as well as providing ÃÂDo Not PlayÃÂ lists. Most important is the actual genreÃÂs of music that should or should not be incorporated into the entertainment. Trust your DJ to keep your party going by allowing him/her to select the majority of the music for your event.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
The commitment required to work in this business. The amount of time which is spent on preparing for an event, preparing playlists, loading equipment, travel time, set up time, break down time. Cost of equipment repair/replacement , cost of music purchases, cost of insurance. Constant music research.
