Introduction: Private music instruction offered in:
- Piano
- Violin
- Music Theory
About me:
I studied violin and piano at the Royal Academy of Music in London (LRAM,) and graduated from New York University with an Honors degree in Music.
Teaching Methods & Philosophy:
For beginner students I emphasize the importance of score-reading and dictation. Proficiency in these two key areas allow students to learn to "teach themselves" and to think critically about their own performance. At more advanced levels, I incorporate music theory to help students better understand musical structure, performance practice, and historical/cultural context. It is important not only to fully grasp the composer's intention, but to also develop one's own interpretation of the music.
I tailor teaching material according to each student's need and interests. After covering music theory basics and building fundamental skills in scales/harmony and dictation, students work on music that interests them. This may include showtunes, popular songs, contemporary music, on top of standard repertoire. I try to help students learn to play by ear, read lead sheets, and flesh out songs (without sheet music).
Teaching Experience:
I have had the wonderful opportunity to teach piano and violin to students aged 4-50+ over the past eight years, and have acquired a highly adaptable teaching style. I am equally experienced in working with beginner students as well as students at advanced levels. I have also successfully helped many students prepare and pass ABRSM and Trinity-Guildhall exams (in violin, piano, and music theory), most passing with distinction.
