Marty came to fix a sizeable hole in our drywall and rehang a tv on the wall. He did a great job, was very friendly but quick and to the point. He did a fast but thorough job and the tv is now back up on the wall ( hung correctly in the stud ) and is working great!

I found this company at the other resourse. I hired them after unsuccessul experience with another contractor. It was a right choice! It was easy to communicate and they worked fast and did a great job! I would hire them again and recommend!

I hired Glen to renovate my kitchen. Spoke with him on the phone a few times as I did with other contractors, and he was by far the most helpful. He was getting prices for materials and even sending me emails of everything he was looking at. He really put some effort in before ever taking on the job. No one else offered to do this for me. We signed a contract that explained everything he was going to do and literally had my kitchen apart in two hours. They installed cabinets, countertops, created new lighting, installed an island and painted. It took two and a half days and the boss (wife) was ecstatic. Could not give a higher recommendation especially with all of the horror stories out there.

My experience with contractors, including this company, is that you have to have patience. When a job has multiple areas of concentration (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc.), there may be different people doing each service; which means that everything is dependent upon each person doing their service in a timely manner, otherwise possible delays. Also, most contractors have multiple job sites where their people are rotated where needed. Since no one can predict a problem will occur, this also causes delays in getting a project completed. All of this is the nature of the job. As I mentioned before, try to have patience. Renovation projects can be frustrating and sometimes upsetting; but if everything is done correctly with minimal errors, the most important thing is that you are happy with the skills provided and the quality of the work completed.

Paul went over and above and did even better than I had hoped. For example, when I asked him to paint my kitchen, I had no idea that he was going to paint the walls inside the back of the cabinets. Wow, looked brand new. He even took down ceiling lights when painting the ceiling. As for other repairs around the house, he did everything 200%. He worked on my home as it was his. If you need a handyman, hire him. You will have no regrets

Pedro was exceptional! I needed a room painted quickly. Called him at the last minute and he showed up to do the job the very next day on a Saturday!!! But the best was the job he did, professional, beautifully done and clean. I am going to hire him for every painting job in the future and will highly recommend him to friends and family. Thank you Pedro!

I hired Kevin to help do some wiring, framing, and drywall so I would be able to mount a tv in a difficult location. He was very knowledgeable and was able to find some creative ways to get around a few unexpected problems he encountered once the wall was opened up. Another contractor I had come to look at the project told me it was no possible and left but now the job is done and my tv looks great with no wires showing.

I wish I could give more than five stars! We’ve had several highly-recommended and well-respected handymen and general contractors over the years and, without a doubt, Hill Home Improvement tops them all! I had an area of moisture-damaged drywall with mold that needed replacing, preferably as soon as possible because of the mold. Rob, the owner, responded to my Thumbtack inquiry in less than an hour. We spoke over the phone right away and he offered to come right over to provide an assessment and within 25 minutes of our call he was here! And it was 9:30 at night! - just goes to show Rob’s dedication and commitment to helping his clients. During his assessment, Rob was very professional, courteous, thorough, and knowledgeable of the problem at hand. What I appreciated the most was his unwavering integrity - he walked me through the plan and all costs; he wanted to complete the project properly while being very conscious of the cost for me. His prices were very very fair. He came the following day with one other worker. They were punctual, got right to work and were in and out so quickly - within an hour! The quality of work was exceptional. I couldn’t be happier! Thank you so much, Rob! Looking forward to many more projects together!

We recently purchased our first home and immediately started a kitchen remodel (including tearing down a wall and framing new ones). We had existing plaster walls, and I was originally looking at drywalling for all the repairs and new walls. Jon recommended putting plaster back into place, and we are very satisfied with the results after hiring him to do the work. Yes, the work was very well done and our home was left as clean as you could reasonably expect it to be after the work, but I think what most impressed me about working with Jon was his communication. He was always easy to get a hold of when needed and constantly provided me with progress updates for the project. Any questions I (a confessed drywall/plaster dummy) had, were answered in a way that I could understand. We would likely hire Jon again if we need wall work done once we recover from this renovation and start our next!

Very professional, he showed up when he said he would, he didn't promise to come out and take a look at the project and NOT show up like another contractor did! He completed the project in a timely manner and I will hire him for future projects. My next door neighbor already want to hire him. The before and after pictures show his workmanship. Great Job!

Artech was a wonderful company and I'm glad we picked them. Alex was very responsive on Thumbtack and was able to come out and give a quote within a couple days. The estimate was lower than a couple of other companies. They did a wonderful job! There was one area that wasn't perfect and without complaining, they came out and re-painted the entire wall over again the next day. IT LOOKS BEAUTIFUL. We are so thankful for their work and would recommend them to anyone who needs painting or other restoration services! If I could give them more than 5 stars I would!

Seamus is master craftsman. There are very few professional plaster specialists available these days. We needed plaster repairs caused by a leaking pipe inside the wall of a 60 year old church, not a job for a contractor who installs and/or repairs drywall. Not only was the cost much less than expected (based on other estimates) but Seamus rescheduled his working hours with very little notice due to funerals we had to schedule. We have several more projects in the next year we will be contracting to Seamus O. Kane. We also plan to recommend his services to our parishioners. YOU CAN NOT GO WRONG HIRING SEAMUS O.KANE. Project: Build an Addition, concrete driveway, stamped pavement!! Hiring Jim Forbes (Forbes Associates, LLC) was one of the best moves my husband John and I ever made. He took our major project of building a stick built garage, built a staircase from the 1st floor to the basement, a stamped concrete driveway, walkway, sidewalks and paving a sidewalk for our new residence in Hamilton Township and he ran with it. We have never been so happy with the outcome of our project. He and his staff were very knowledgeable, professional and a pleasure to work with. He treated my husband and I like he would his own family. Jim kept his timelines as promised, handled all the township paperwork involved, and was very reasonable and honest about the proposals he gave us up front for the entire project. We have had several bad experiences in the past with our project and he cleaned everything up for us. We did the right thing by meeting with Jim and hiring him as our General Contractor. We would highly recommend him, and appreciate his honesty and integrity that he puts into his work. We love the new additions to our beautiful home!!! Thank you Jim and crew!! Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
