Susan helped me with a closet makeover to update my wardrobe for a new job and it was a great experience! She was super flexible around my busy work schedule and very responsive to emails. When she came over, she took the time to understand my wardrobe needs and questions. She went through every item in my closet and helped me decide which pieces were still working, which were past their prime, and which ones were not doing anything for me! She has a great sense of style and helped me think about ways to wear some of my new pieces in a different way. She also was very honest (but still gentle and warm)- which is so important because your friends and family may not tell you the truth if something does not work for you. I can't wait to go shopping with her!

Melissa was a pleasure to work with!! The REFINE service allowed me to visualize what I had in my wardrobe and also purge through clothes hidden in the back of my closet or pieces I was hoping to fit into again. Melissa helped me to maximize my limited closet and drawer space and also organize my shoes and handbags. She was very patient and gave great feedback in making the decisions to part with certain pieces in my wardrobe. With the REFINE service she also helps you sell/donate your unwanted clothes/shoes/handbags. I thank you for your services and look forward to refining my wardrobe for 2017!!

I hired Joddie to help me weed out the items in my closet that no longer worked for me, as well as to build my professional and weekend wardrobe. We first met for a consultation, for which she didn't charge. During the consultation, Joddie asked all the right questions and seemed genuinely interested in making this experience really customized for me and what I was looking to accomplish. All the items she chose for me were spot on! She also stayed within budget, which was nice. Her approach was respectful, non-pressured and made the time fly by! I plan on hiring Joddie again for the fall/winter season and also for special occasions. I highly recommend Joddie!

These two run a very creative and professional styling company. While providing me with a new personal wardrobe, they delivered many fashionable options and payed close attention to the details. I've worked with them several times and have always been more than pleased with the results.

I have had both my hair and makeup done by Auralis on multiple occasions, and each time I am not only satisfied but impressed. Auralis exhibits a level of professionalism combined with an ease that I find refreshing. She listens to what is needed, offers insighful suggestions, and always delivers. I have had her as the lead makeup artist and hair stylist for several weddings, and each time she is flawless under pressure, managing all the personalities and changing requests with grace and positivity while turning out inspired results that elevate the moods of each person she works with and accentuate the beauty of the event. On photoshoots, she also has a charm that is unparalleled and a skill level that lends her to any set of circumstances. She knows how to anticipate the concerns of a photographer often before they are even voiced, and is more than accommodating as changes arise. She is definitely a team player. I have likewise had my hair done by Auralis on multiple occasions, and she understands my needs and requests as they coincide with my real life. I would recommend her to anyone for any reason, and I do so every chance I get.

Jess styled me through college till present. She has helped me with interview outfits for recent job applications. She is always able to make me look much more professional. In a mostly-male field (law enforcement), it is great to have a well-organized stylist you can contact in a pinch. Going-out was always difficult for me because I could never find something that looked decent on my body. Jess helped me feel more comfortable by dressing me to impress. Since I have trouble wearing heels, she has suggested kitten heels and booties which make my calves look great. The added plus is that I do not hurt the next day. Thanks Jess!!

I first met Garry when he was my stylist for a photoshoot and he was absolutely amazing. It was almost like he knew my style before even meeting me. Ever since then, we have done more photo shoots and I have asked Garry to do some shopping for me as well since I am not a big fan of going to stores unless I have to. He always manages to find what I'm looking for and puts a smile on my face. He even finds things for me without me mentioning it just because that dress is "so me". Garry is very professional and pays attention to his client's personality and personal preference for style while also taking you out of your comfort zone in a wonderful way. He has since become one of my absolute best friends and I trust him to find incredible pieces for me always. Highly recommend!!! He is excellent!

Shirley Elle was wonderful to work with. She was preparing for a 10-day conference and needed several outfits picked up. I did not want to spend any additional money making purchases. Shirley Elle worked with my existing wardrobe and accessories and came up with 20 amazing looks (2 outfits/day). If you're looking to give new life to your current clothes, I would certainly recommend working with her.

I have a young contemporary women's wear line, Rosina Mae, that "takes you from the beach, to the street, to the party!" Additionally, I style fashion editorials, lifestyle shoots, and model test shoots. I also have experience with personal shopping and individual styling clients. If you have a theme, I will help bring your vision to life. Sewing and pattern-making are also passions of mine and I have experience creating custom bodysuits and swimwear for television, pageants, and everyday! I enjoy working with people as passionate and dedicated as I am. With wardrobe styling, creating amazing images often depends on the team's willingness to work together through certain challenges. A successful team can mean the difference between getting published or not.

      About

I have worked in education for over 15 years, interacting with the public -- parents, students, community representatives from politics and business, as well as various administrative levels within the educational structure. I've seen the best and the worst. I have also worked in a few clothing stores over the years. These two industries, though seemingly different, constantly overlap the concept of people displaying their style and taste. People of all ages need assistance dressing appropriately. Working together, it is possible to find what is appropriate and comfortable, without sacrificing your own personal style.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I find a personal stylist?

To find a fashion consultant, start by browsing portfolios online. Styling is a visual art, so finding a fashion consultant who fits the style you desire is key. Great personal stylists aren’t confined to one style, but if you’re seeking a hipper, fashion-forward vibe, you’d do well to find someone with a modern portfolio, while a fashion consultant with a consistently refined style could be a better fit if you’d prefer a more conservative look. Reading reviews is also helpful for learning more about the fashion consultant. Research their training, background and years of experience. After reviewing websites and Instagram accounts, meet with the stylist in person to learn how well they fit your personality; some fashion consultants offer a free phone consultation prior to hiring. Before hiring, make sure you clearly understand their terms of service and payment.

      What do image consultants do?

Image consultants help people look and feel their best by coaching them on their clothing and beauty choices. An image consultant can be hired for a one-time occasion, such as an awards ceremony, big birthday party or photo shoot. The consultant will recommend clothing, hair and makeup to suit the occasion either using either what the client owns or taking a targeted shopping trip. For a complete fashion consultation, the image consultant will assess your wardrobe, your lifestyle, and what you hope to present to the world, and will then determine the best colors, styles and cuts for you. You can get help streamlining your professional appearance, adjusting your style after a change in body size, solidifying a new look, or finding clothing to fit one area of your life like work or weekends. Image consultants also provide closet edits, going through your clothing and paring out what isn’t right for the look you’re trying to achieve. Personal shopping is another service that image consultants provide. After an image assessment, they can either shop with you or shop on your behalf to find you key pieces you need.

      What is a fashion consultant?

A fashion consultant is a paid professional who will advise you on what to wear and how to wear it to fit your desired lifestyle or career goals. A fashion consultant can provide many services including personal shopping, closet audits, beauty consultations, style consultations and ongoing seasonal services. A fashion consultant often has a design or fashion background (although this is not required) and an innate sense of style. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut with the colors, cuts and designs we think suit us. A fashion consultant comes in with fresh eyes and provides constructive feedback to guide your style choices.

During your initial meeting, your fashion consultant will take stock of your current clothing selection and learn what you hope to achieve. They’ll identify core wardrobe pieces you need, as well as advise you how to wear items together. Many consultants create style lookbooks for their clients explaining things like exactly which shoes to wear with what pants and how to accessorize each look. Fashion consultants are a great option for people who are updating their style due to age, career changes or body changes, or who are just ready for a new look and feel. Most fashion consultants charge by the hour, with some offering packages and others working from a retainer.

      What is a personal shopper?

Personal shoppers take the pain out of having good fashion. Personal shoppers are paid professionals who work with women, men or children who need style assistance. If you are stuck in a fashion rut, are unsure how to dress in a way that flatters your body, need to revamp your image, or want a more professional career look, personal shoppers can help. Personal shoppers identify the look their client wants to achieve and purchase the necessary clothing and accessories to achieve it. The process often begins with an initial consultation with the client to understand their style goals. This consultation may include a closet “audit,” an assessment of the client’s current wardrobe to see what items can be eliminated and what must be purchased to achieve the desired style.

The client and the personal shopper can shop together, selecting items as a team. The personal shopper may also shop on behalf of the client, then bring all items to the client for a final decision. A third option is pre-shopping, where the personal shopper reaches the store(s) ahead of the client and sets aside clothing for the client to try on, expediting the whole process — a win for anyone who hates spending time in the mall. Personal shoppers can also be hired for one-time events such as weddings, vacations or birthdays. You can also enlist a personal shopper to do your gift shopping for you. Overall, a personal shopper is an investment in making good style choices.
