Hired Simply Moving for a long distance move from New York City to Washington DC on short notice. They were extremely responsive and were able to accomodate my move even though it was only 2-3 weeks out. The crew arrived on-time at 8AM the morning of the move and packed my entire apartment in 1 hour. For context, the crew I used to move-in took 3-4 hours. They then drove directly to DC (even let me ride with them for no additional charge) and again unpacked everything in 1 hour. Even helped repair some furniture that had been damaged by the prior crew, again at no additional charge. Had a great experience and highly recommend using them!

Eric and his team were rockstars! I have about 80 boxes total and had to make a stop in between to my storage unit to pick up some items. Most of them were really heavy books but they treated it with care compared to my previous movers. It was a long day, about 9 hours because my final destination was a 2nd floor walkup. They worked hard so I bought them lunch in between. Sam was also very friendly and accommodating, despite having to change my move dates 3 times because of unexpected events. One thing I could suggest is rolling moving bins so loose items could be stored in there. Thank you again SEKA, highly recommended!!

Communicating with David to arrange the move was a pleasure. I felt very reassured and unstressed immediately. Flexible can-do attitude. I had a long distance move and his guys must have put in a 16 hour day with all the moves they did including mine but they remained polite smiling and professional. Everything arrived in one piece! I would use them again and again and again. Wonderful service. Thank you!!

Varian was fantastic -- super-responsive, able to provide same-day service on short notice, offered a very competitive rate, arrived on time, and was very professional and friendly. I needed an AC installed, and he even provided a piece of equipment that I should have had myself, but didn't have on hand. He got the job done in about 15 minutes, if that, and I was totally satisfied with the quality of the installation. Would 100% recommend him.

Incredibly easy to work with. Everything was straight forward, they were very competitive and extremely fast in their responses. On the move day, the movers arrived in front of our building half an hour earlier, were efficient, patient, and professional in every possible way. Unpacking done – not a single item was broken or damaged. I will be recommending these guys to anyone who asks for a mover.

Excellent company with people with excellent work ethic. We hired them for a long distance move. The movers were very professional and helped us reduce the stress of moving. Our new place had hardwood floors and when we told them about it, they brought rubber protectors and blankets to protect the floors. They keep everything clean and neat. They made it all easy for us. Really appreciate it.

This move was done a couple months back. One of the better moving choices I have made. I am moving from Redding, CT and I'm moving to Charlotteville, Virginia. As the move was in the process of happening we experienced a snowstorm at the time of the move. Despite the bad timing with the storm everything and one made it there. Nothing broken with my stuff. The Quote from Erica was great compared to the other movers and despite an issue like the storm, the quote didn't change. Jack and the movers still made it. These moving heroes are awesome!

These guys came prepared and ready to work. Not only did they protect my furniture with blankets but they also padded my wooden floors and labeled my furniture. I used them twice both local and now long distance. Give them a shot they're worth it!!!

I've moved many times, some short distance some long distance. I must say this has been the most accommodating company I've dealt with. If you have the pleasure of working with Eric he is extremely professional, patient and helpful. I definitely recommend them. Unfortunately a box full of shoes was lost and never found. I would suggest numbering all your boxes and making sure you receive them all at dtop off.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
