This is my second project with Tony completed for me. Tony completed my walk -in closet so beautifully that I wanted him to transform my basement into my dream home office. The basement was cold and boring. Tony made it warm and inspiring. He walked through the space and asked a lot of questions to understand what I wanted and made many great suggestions that were far more greater than mine with his experience. Tony took my vision and again made it into an amazing reality. Tony covered all the walls with sheet-rock and put carpet on the floor and built all the shelving for the office. He completed the project in a timely manner, was professional and fair with his price and I felt completely safe having him in my home. For a single woman that is very important. I HIGHLY recommend Tony! The next project I do in my home I will definitely be contracting him.

Joe not only gave me a quote below other junk removal companies (that base their rates on size of the truck used) - he also was able to offer to come the next day and showed up early. He and another gentlemen quickly removed everything I mentioned in my initial request and a few extra things I had gathered. Joe offered to get rid of more if I wanted but I will finish clearing out the rest of my basement another time soon and will definitely be using Liberty Restoration & Remodeling, LLC.

Needed a basement finished that was started by another contractor. Work included drywall, taping, etc., some framing, floor repair, door and trim installation. Sam got it all done in less than a week at a fair price. He recommended a painter and a flooring man and they should be done in another week. Sam is a good guy and the quality of his work is fantastic! Would definitely hire him again and highly recommend him.

I have NEVER been SO PLEASED with any independent contractor, as I am with Glenn! We had an electrical issue in our finished basement. It was quite scary, with outlets smoking. Glenn came out, analyzed the problem, went to Home Depot, bought what he needed, and fixed the problem! He quoted me a price of $225 to come out. I assumed it would be much higher to fix the problem. It turned out to be the entire price! I would recommend Glenn to anyone, for any problem! I will never use anyone else! He was prompt, thorough, listened to my concerns, explained everything in full, and I slept very well last night, knowing my house would not burn to the ground due to faulty wiring from the previous owner! Thank you, Glenn!

Had a gas line leak found by pgw, so I had subzero come out for the repair. Came out right away which is very important and the quote given was great. Not only did Benny fix the leaking pipe but also performed a entire gas leak inspection in my basement. Before you get a quote anywhere else be sure to keep subzero on top of the list

Hello Everyone, Just wanted to share my success story with you, I hired STP and Home Decor to hang drywall in my unfinished basement the I had another contractor begin. Unbenonced to me at the time the previous contractors work was less then commendable. Joseph and his crew came into my home treated me with dignity and respect corrected the other contractors mistakes and gave me an awesome price. Now that my drywall is hung I have hired them to comple the painting and put down my new floor I'm sure it will be spectacular. I look forward to sharing the total transformation of my new living area with you thanks to Joseph of STP and Home Decor

We discovered mold in the basement wall and underneath laminate floor few weeks after we moved into our new house. Unfortunately this was missed by the home inspector. We had redo the full basement (1350 sq ft). This included dry wall, new ceramic tile, fireplace, theatre room, electrical work etc. Tim helped us during this painful times. He was able to find the source of the problem (water leak) which I think needed a lot patience and detective work. He always gave us a honest opinion and has a vast wealth of knowledge that you can not get on the internet. Not only is he pleasant and personable, but a stickler for perfection. He followed up on every last detail until the job was completed. The result was outstanding as we now have a basement with a very modern look. Since then we used his services numerous times and also refered him to my friends who shared a similar opinion.

I had the pleasure of past and/or current customers respond to my reference check in which they provided nothing but wonderful reviews for Kevin's professionalism, honesty, fair pricing and quality work. I look forward in working with Kevin on our basement project in the near future and cannot wait to leave a review once it is completed. Thank you Kevin.

Had the paint on my driveway removed. Rafi called when he said he would, showed up when he said he would. Spent the entire day which was longer than he estimated. They stayed until the job was finished without raising the price. Did a nice job and cleaned up afterwards. A pleasure to work with. Would definitely recommend them.

Project: Build an Addition, concrete driveway, stamped pavement!! Hiring Jim Forbes (Forbes Associates, LLC) was one of the best moves my husband John and I ever made. He took our major project of building a stick built garage, built a staircase from the 1st floor to the basement, a stamped concrete driveway, walkway, sidewalks and paving a sidewalk for our new residence in Hamilton Township and he ran with it. We have never been so happy with the outcome of our project. He and his staff were very knowledgeable, professional and a pleasure to work with. He treated my husband and I like he would his own family. Jim kept his timelines as promised, handled all the township paperwork involved, and was very reasonable and honest about the proposals he gave us up front for the entire project. We have had several bad experiences in the past with our project and he cleaned everything up for us. We did the right thing by meeting with Jim and hiring him as our General Contractor. We would highly recommend him, and appreciate his honesty and integrity that he puts into his work. We love the new additions to our beautiful home!!! Thank you Jim and crew!! We use Paragon both in our old house and in our new house. In our old house they expanded our laundry room, put up shelves and in our bathroom they installed a bathtub, did plumbing and installed tiles around the bathtub and on floor. In our new house, they expanded 2 doorway, put down wood floors in 3rooms, built a handicap ramp to the back door, installed light fixture in the bedroom and painted and put up molding. They also installed a system to remove radon from the basement. All work was done professionally. We would highly recommend them to anyone

About

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
