What tools do you need to repair drywall?

To repair drywall, you need up to several tools and materials. For example, you may need a drill to insert drywall screws and boreholes. A drywall saw or utility knife is perfect for cutting and shaping drywall, and don’t forget your tape measure and pencil. Drywall and taping knives are also essential.

For materials, you’ll likely need construction adhesive, drywall tape, drywall screws, masking tape and joint compound.

If you don’t have these tools — and you don’t want to spend money on them — contact a drywall repair professional instead of doing it yourself.

How do I find a good drywall contractor?

The best way to find a good drywall contractor is by searching for the top-rated contractors near you on Thumbtack. View their ratings, and read their reviews to see how they did on past drywall projects. Pay attention to the photos uploaded by the customers and contractors, so you can analyze their quality of work.

After you found a few contractors you like, ask them for price quotes. For more tips on how to hire contractors, read our in-depth guide.

Who do I hire to install or repair drywall?

A general contractor, handyman or a drywall contractor (or company) can usually install and repair drywall. It’s recommended that you call one of these types of pros when your drywall needs to be repaired, such as after a plumber or electrician has completed their work.

Look up local pros online and compare their profiles, paying extra attention to their ratings, reviews, experience and list of services. Contact three to five pros to get cost estimates for your project.

Do drywall contractors need a license?

Pros may need to obtain a license to fix and install drywall. It’s always worth checking with your local government about whether a drywall company or contractor has to be licensed before they work on your project.

Do drywall contractors do insulation?

A drywall contractor focuses on drywall. If you want to install insulation (or upgrade your existing installation), you should hire an insulation contractor. It's possible that your drywall contractor may be able to offer basic insulation services, but for more advanced insulation installation (such as spray foam), go with a professional who specializes in this.

This was by far the best experience of working with a contractor. They came the same day for an estimate. They came the next day for a 3 hour job. They made extra effort to keep my house clean. And the drywall repair work was absolutely perfect.

This Company is very Professional and did a Fantastic job repairing our hallway ceiling, which got water damage from a leaky roof. They also did great work placing texturing on ceiling and painting the walls of the hallway, and made sure the work was done right. I highly recommend this Company for any kind of drywall repair or painting project.

Albert did a ceiling drywall repair and texturing. He did an awesome job and in a timely manner, and he cleaned up after himself when he was finished. I will definitely hire him again if I need more work done.

I could only select 3/5 options but Jose’s punctuality and value are right up there at the top with his work quality, professionalism and responsiveness. He also went out of his way to take care of another spot that wasn’t originally included in our project. He was very careful in prepping to avoid making a mess and maintaining a clean space on my wife’s freshly vacuumed floors. I wouldn’t hesitate to hire him again for drywall repair, a real pleasant experience that certainly earns 5 stars from us. Thank you again Jose!

I hired this company to remove and replace dry wall that had water damage from a swamp cooler leak after the roof was repaired. Unfortunately the leak happened In a room I don’t usually go in so by the time I noticed the damage it smelt really moldy and the room was humid. I asked to remove all the dry wall that was damaged and down the wall where the water had leaked because I have gotten mold poisoned before and didn’t want to take any chances. The guy didn’t replace it all and only sprayed primer on a few areas. He didn’t completely skim coat the dry wall that was replaced and applied texture that looked nothing like I had. You could still see gray in a whole section. Also there was some yellow brown staining coming through after the drywall mud dried. He didn’t take all the old dry wall off. The room still smelt very moldy and was still humid after it was “repaired”. I had to buy chemicals specifically for mold and clean what I could after he left since it still smelt horrible. I also had to figure out how to redo the texture for the whole ceiling and do it myself which is what I originally hired this company for. The room is still a bit humid and I’m scared for what’s growing inside the walls that wasn’t replaced and taken care of. I had to doctor up what I could aesthetically and do what I could to take care of the mold after the fact but that’s exactly what I hired this company for. Disappointed.
