John has a way of putting you at ease, while teaching. He is patient, knowledgeable, and professional, while making your lesson fun. He teaches at your level, but challenges you with different assignments and projects. I highly recommend John as a guitar teacher for any level player.Apr 30, 2019VerifiedJohn P. Martinez's reply
Hey Mike thanks for the great review I really appreciate it. keep up the good work as I always say practice makes perfect and make sure you connect those tones!
When I first came to John Martinez for Guitar lessons I knew nothing about the guitar and even less about music. John is very knowledgeable and a very skillful teacher. I look forward to our weekly lessons. John challenges me to be better with each lesson. William WhiteJul 27, 2018Verified
My 16 year old son began lessons with John three weeks ago as an absolute beginner and I could not be more happy. John is a talented guitarist, a very patient and insightful instructor, and has gone above and beyond to help my son enjoy learning how to play the guitar. I suspect we will be going to him for lessons for a very long time.Apr 14, 2015Verified
Guitar Lessons (for children or teenagers)
The lesson was for my 9 year old daughter. I share joint custody with her dad. So, for her first lesson we all wanted to go meet John P. Martinez. So, myself, my husband, my toddler daughter, my 9 year old who was taking the lesson, her dad, and other toddler sister show up. Right away John seemed to not like that. Initially getting there my husband who is a black man, goes to shake John's hand, John says "Ahh let's just fist bump". Thinking John just had a phobia of germs my husband says ok. However, when my daughters father, who is Hispanic goes to shake his hand John shakes his hand very firmly with no hesitation. I was unaware of this all. If I'd had seen that I would have left. That is just flat out racism. So John seemed annoyed that we were all there, stating " it's a lot of people for one little girl". Also he doesn't have much room for us all. The lesson was for one hour. The first half hour he just talked how bad her guitar was that we bought for her, and how cheap it was. While showing and telling us how many thousands he spent on his guitar. Lesson went on. John would talk to my daughter as if she were dumb. She has never played a guitar in her life, but he kept telling her do this and that as if she knew what she was doing. The whole time she looked confused. He did not take the time to explain it or go over the basics with her. He's not child friendly, much Less people friendly. I was very disappointed with his service. I was very offended with how he treated my kid and my husband.Mr martinez acted very unprofessional I would not go back even if it were free. I would not recommend him to ANYONE!Jan 15, 2017VerifiedJohn P. Martinez's reply
I don't know where my original response went but I am going to do it again!!!! Brittany, somehow we got off on the wrong foot and I am not sure why and what a huge misunderstanding! As I mentioned in the original response, the morning I met you I started feeling ill with a cough and congested chest. I didn't want to shake anyone's hand so the fist bump to your husband was to not get him sick. I only shook Jerry's hand out of impulse and I should have given him a fist bump, too. I have to admit I was a little surprised to have so many people coming to a lesson but not a big deal. Also, usually I might have to check out 1 guitar but in your case I had to check out 2 which took longer than usual. I am sorry I had so much stuff in my office but I had been rehearsing for that nights gig. Usually I have 2 or 3 people besides me in my office. When we did get to the lesson Tiara did great and she is very smart. I asked her to memorize the names of the guitar strings, we worked on simple chord progression and even got to a short tablature piece. That's a lot given the short time we had. As I also mentioned music stores are notorious for not setting up the guitars they sell and all you need is a simple set up for both guitars. One last note, my best man in my wedding is a black man and one of my best friends so let's not read more into something that it never was. I am refunding the money for your lesson but I hope you will rewrite a more reasonable review and more importantly you may want to reconsider bringing Tiara back to lessons. She would be a great student and I am sure all will be fine. Regardless, it was a pleasure meeting you and your families and I am super sorry for the misunderstanding. Sincerely, John Martinez
I've been playing guitar for almost five years and up until a couple years ago I was self taught and since I've been taking lessons from John I can definitely notice significant improvement. Anything I want to learn he's willing to teach me and I honestly couldn't ask for a better teacher.Jan 18, 2017John P. Martinez's reply
Thanks for the great review I super appreciate it. More importantly, it means a lot to me when my students have really improved their musical skills. Keep up the good work!!!! John Martinez
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?Current promo: Take guitar lessons for 3 months and get 1 free lesson. Usually students take a 1/2 hour lesson per week but some want a 1 hour lesson. Not a problem we just need to find a slot that will work. Your 1st lesson needs to be 1 hour then we will find a convenient time for your weekly schedule. Generally lessons are paid for monthly not at each individual lesson and sometimes I will change this if need be. NOTE: I will do a maximum of 4 beginner students in a group lesson for $25 per each group session per Skype which is an online lesson. You will need a beginner book called " How to Play Guitar Phase 1" by Ernie Ball and an in tune guitar. I may supplement the book lessons with additional material by email or text depending on your progress.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?Guitar lessons are always private one on one lessons. I can teach you remotely by Skype if need be. Lessons are at my home near Tramway and Comanche on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. If you must have a different day then just let me know and maybe we can work it out but I prefer to have students back to back. If you are a beginner you will need to purchase at Baum's Music an instruction book called "How to Play Guitar Phase 1" by Ernie Ball. More advanced students will work from chord charts and/or tablature, transcriptions, scale grid sheets, etc. and many students video their lessons.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?I was always one of the best players in high school but I didn't take my 1st lesson till I was 19. I always just jammed with friends and various bands. Eventually I graduated from University of New Mexico Fine Arts Department with a Classical Performance degree in 1986. I promptly moved to Hollywood to attend Musician"s Institute and graduated from Guitar Institute of Technology in 1987. I have been a guitarist/vocalist performer for most my life and currently I have 2 acts. John Martinez solo guitarist/vocalist, Chile Pi Acoustic Duo.
