My family and I had just found ourselves in serious trouble after being taken advantage of by a previous contractor. We had a full remodel to do and six weeks to go before my wife gave birth. Then we hired P.O.W.E.R. Construction. They did beautiful work, with a strong eye for detail in an amazingly short amount of time and at reasonable rates. We had asbestos abatement, stucco, window replacement, drywall work, painting, new doors, complete rewiring of the entire home, and wall to wall tile. The crown jewel, something I had not even considered, was the new porch. It was dynamic! My broken down house, left untouched for sixty years, is now a comfortable and stunning new home inside and out. Now that I have a week or so until my newest family member is here we can bring her home to a perfect house. Allen Albuquerque NM

Charlie was more than accommodating for a small painting project we had. He was quick to respond to our request and was professional, punctual and thorough. His estimate was extremely reasonable. He checked in ahead of time with us to survey the job and gave us sound advice and let us know what to expect. The work was precise and Charlie displayed skill that reflected experience. The cleanup was exceptional. I certainly will use Jay's Painting in the future. David K., Taylor Ranch

Came to give me a quote on some stucco repair and ended up quoting me on some yard work too. Beat the other landscape price by $100 and it came out nice. He's coming back out to do the stucco work and I was happy with the price. He also does painting, brick walls, and a lot of other things. Seems like a stand up guy.

True craftsmanship! Jody and his crew did great work and bring a skill level way beyond an ordinary roofing contractor. Jody's suggestions, minor improvements and attention to detail, reflect his years of experience as a general contractor and a combination of skill, intelligence and desire to do high level work. He will be doing some additional contracting work for me. Good contractors are hard to come by.

HEADLINE: USE THIS MAN FOR ALL MANNER OF CONTRACTING/HANDYMAN WORK Brendon worked for me as a handyman/contractor over a period of weeks. He did a great many different jobs. I will list all of them and comment on how well he did them. DRYWALL First, I want to VERY STRONGLY dispute the one poor review Brendon received on drywall repair. I don't know what this guy was thinking. Brendon removed a whole series of large mirrors from my walls in very conspicuous places (like living room), repaired the drywall, textured it and painted it. It came out very professionally well. He also took feedback. Perhaps you might think the "other guy" who gave Brendon a poor review had a much nicer house and higher standards. Nope. I haven't lived in a house under 7 figures in 45 years. Some of the houses I lived in were in the high single digit multimillion category. I have very high standards. According to Brendon, the guy who gave him the poor review was not at the property when the work was done but the lady of the house gave approval. PAINTING Brendon paints well and does not complain about tedious painting. Other contractors have complained. He makes no mess and cleans up after himself. DUMP RUNS Brendon volunteers daily to do dump runs on his way home. ELECTRICAL / WIRING Brendon is one of the only handymen/contractors I've worked with who has no qualms about doing even complex wiring. He has installed plugs, switches, dimmers, new cans, switched out fixtures, pulled wire. All was done very professionally. He also is going to be installing a new water feature pump outside. PLASTER/DRYWALL/WOOD REPAIR Excellent work. EXTERIOR PAINTING OF WROUGHT IRON RAILING ON DECKS. Messy tough work. He is doing a fine job and has not complained. DECK CONSTRUCTION I have no qualms about hiring Brendon to build a deck from scratch using Trex and pressure treated lumber and hidden fasteners. PERSONAL HABITS Brendon is EARLY WITHOUT FAIL daily. He does smoke but outside. He is neat and tidy. He is very easy to get along with. A good guy. SUMMARY: With Brendon's rates, he is more than reasonably priced. I WOULD RECOMMEND BRENDON WITHOUT QUALIFICATION. Again, I live in a very high end neighborhood in a 6000 s.f. house loaded with art and antiques. I would say: he would be a very good choice.

To start the owner was very well dressed, which is not what you usually see with contractors and his knowledge of roofs is also of a very high level. For me that is why I chose him, and I'm glad I did. The job went very smooth and turned out wonderful. Great job Mike.

Damien and his helpers were very professional and did a great job at our home replacing damaged siding and patio roof trim! They replaced some 19 year old siding and roof trim that had been damaged by swamp cooler leak in less time than expected. RP did a great job in matching both siding and paint! Other contractors would not touch the job due to hard-to-find siding. RP's Finished job looks like new! They did the job within 4 work days of first contact with us. We are very pleased! Owen F.

I've had Jason tile all of my bathrooms which included a remodel that involved plumbing, drywall and painting and all were done professionally, on time and within budget. He's helped with demo of a broken cinderblock wall and building a replacement fence, fixing a broken main water line and building a pizza oven and outdoor fireplace. I highly recommend him!

It was an absolute pleasure to work with this contractor. He handled all the initial bidding process and was very responsive. Due to many other projects on his plate, he sent a different contractor, Sergio with S. C. Concrete to handle the project. Sergio is one of the most professional and honest contractors I've ever worked with, and I have worked with many. His work was 1st class and he went above and beyond to give me a quality slab at a fair price. Absolutely, give either of them a call. I will use them again.

We hired Benavidez Construction to complete a bathroom remodel that our previous contractor didn`t finish. They finished in record time, with incredible attention to detail in the woodworking, tiling and paint finishes. We then hired him to re-do our staircase in gorgeous poplar wood which came out great, and also hired him to create a stunning fireplace in our kitchen covering up an old wood burning fireplace. The result is just beautiful. Very pleased with their work, will definitely use them for future projects.

ProStar Construction has taken our home from shab to fab. They have updated the entire house. This included a full kitchen redo, two bathrooms, tiled laundry room, built a deck, rebuilt a badly neglected patio cover, built 3 gates and fenced a side yard, exterior & interior painting, etc. Prostar - Jeff & Jason are professional full service contractors. Each project has been done with excellence. We look forward to working with them on each project. The neighbors are impressed and have projects they are interested in having done by Prostar as well. Always a job well done!

Lefon Prince was dependable, reliable, very skilled and he went above and beyond the call of duty. I would hire him again in a second. Levon did some painting and repair work on an older manufactured home. He went looking from some obsolete plumbing fixtures and he didn't give up until he found them. The painting and repair work were done to a very high standard. He was honest and he kept in touch.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
