Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: I've always enjoyed solving problems and figuring out why something doesn't work. PCs, especially software problems, can be a challenge. Hardware problems usually are pretty straightforward. I also enjoy seeing the look of relief and happiness on a client's face when the system they thought was dead, and their pictures and important data lost forever, is brought back to life.

Trouble w/wireless connection to printer; reloaded printer and some other stuff, about 15 minutes; impressed w/ease of "repair"; qualities that stood out were timeliness and ease of communication. When we spoke of the repair, I was uncomfortable with his comment " not sure why this worked, it's a windows thing." I mentioned he would probably be back and what else would work; he had no answer. I was told to call him if the repair did not work. I have left two messages up to now (2:35), no reply. My request for assistance was responded to immediately. My experience would have been improved with a repair. I would like to see the professional do in the future is to see him soon, and to effect repair on the first visit. These are the facts. When I hear from John, I will again post a review; standby readers!
JStewart Data Systems's reply
To those of you wondering, Steven did hear back from me. I did not leave him hanging. At last contact, the printer and scanner were able to communicate with all the computers on his network. Unfortunately, it took two visits and a phone call to fully resolve the issue. Sometimes this is what it takes, especially when it is an intermittent failure like this one. He was only charged for the first service call. I am sorry that Steven was disappointed in my performance on this job. No, the comment was not the best, and probably deserved more thought. But it was honest. I didn't know for sure. Could have given him some BS explanation, but that is not how I work. . It wasn't until the second service call, that I had a much better idea of where the fault lay. I was able to confirm it through research, and with Steven sharing with me that his phone kept loosing connectivity to the home network. I do not know if the phone problem was occurring on the first service call. It was not mentioned. In a nutshell, the problem was not with Windows connectivity to the printer, but a combination of a quirk in the firmware of the model of printer he had, and an unstable Comcast internet connection. The printer, rather than responding to the lost wireless connection by checking for the connection to be reestablished, would go into corner and sulk. It required manual intervention by the user to bring the printer out of its funk. First time I'd seen a printer act that way in the 12 years I've been in this business. Fix was to use a wired connection to the Comcast modem from the printer. Everything seems to be working fine at last contact.

I brought my laptop to John Stewart to repair a broken hinge. The Good Mr. Stewart ended up replacing my laptop with another model. I received another similar laptop with less RAM, a faster processor, and a larger HD. The Bad While fixing my laptop for the broken hinge, somehow, Mr. Stewart rendered my laptop "unbootable." This is why I ended up getting a different laptop back than the one I gave him. As part of the swap, I received a flash drive with the data pulled off of my old laptop, although some of the data was missing. I also received the hard drive from my old laptop and will have to find someone else to get the missing data from it. I am not going back to Mr. Stewart for this. The Ugly The replacement laptop came infected with all kinds of porn and viruses. I had to use four different anti-virus and anti-malware programs to clean it up. I've been computing for a long time and have never had any problems like this surface on any of my machines. Mr. Stewart did tell me that he used the replacement computer for a bit before giving it to me, so I'm assuming his use is the source of the porn and related viruses.

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Yes I do keep up on the latest developments in my field. I subscribe to several on-line newsletters, including one from CompTia, which is a certification organization for my industry. In addition, I am currently studying to take the new A+ examine through CompTia to certify that I am knowledgeable in the repair of PCs and their hardware and in the operating systems (usually Windows) that they run.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

The more detailed information you can give about the failed system, the more accurate the quote you will likely get. For example, if your laptop has a damaged display, giving the make and model of the laptop allows me to get an accurate price for a replacement screen rather than guess and give you an average cost.
