My experience was quite different from the five star reviews. I was sent to the wrong location, first by LanguageXpress, then by the teacher which resulted in about an hour of driving around and standing in a parking lot. When we finally got to the library, there was no room reserved so we sat in a public area. When I described my ability to read Camus, Sartre, modern fiction and solidly intermediate grammar skills, I asked for help specificly with conversation with which I am very slow and nervous. She said she was unable to just sit and talk but that we must do lessons from workbooks. I read all the exercises she gave me well, as I knew 90% of that material, but the upshot was she seemed very confused and unwilling to have a conversation -- "what would we talk about?" She was very sweet and motivated, but stuck in a very traditional approach. My conversation subsequently with Julietta, the owner, ended up with her ascribing the problem to my not knowing enough to be taught without doing basic exercises. This is not in keeping with modern learning science which recognizes the value of immersion, minimizes exercises and teaches the way children learn -- by imitation with a lot of gentle correction. Doing basic exercises also does not take advantage of what I already know. I have spent time in Paris and get by just fine, and no one there said look I can't talk to you until you stop making mistakes with the subjunctive.
