Having taken an unexpected early retirement, and living the retirement life for 8 months, I decided to delve into looking for another career. Being employed for so many years, I was not prepared for the many changes that have taken place in searching for employment. I used Google to search out how to create a resume. What I discovered was so much conflicting information, do this, do that, add this, don’t add that, how many pages, etc. It was daunting and I felt defeated. So I tried ideas from each site and sat down to create my resume. I typed up my resume, adding my last employer. It turned out to be four pages long. Not thinking too much about the length of it, I was mailing and emailing it to prospective employers. I must have sent out a dozen or so. I started to wonder why I wasn’t getting any call backs for interviews, not a one. I wondered if I needed to change my resume, but where would I start? How I would start? What would I need to do to change it? I wondered if it might be too long. I had a feeling the problem was the way I laid out my resume, but didn’t know what I needed to do to change it. Working on this hunch, I got in touch with Sandy. She and I spoke on the phone for almost 2 hours. She explained to me how resume formatting had changed over the years, gave me pointers on how to create it, informed me that four pages was WAY TOO LONG, and to get it down to no more than 2 pages and down to 1 preferably. She gave me tips on how to pare down my resume, interview tips, what to say, and more importantly what NOT to say, tips on attire, etc. I went to work on reconstructing my resume taking all her advice and managed to get it down to 2 pages. I sent out this new resume on a tight deadline to one potential employer before I called her back about my revamped resume. I emailed it to her, and then called her. Over the phone, she guided me through the new resume, asking me detailed questions regarding each employer and duties, skills, etc and before the conversation was over, she had single handedly helped me get my resume down to ONE PAGE!! I started sending out this new, more appropriate resume and had 4 calls for interviews within a week’s time. There were other phone calls from me to Sandy due to my not being able to figure out issues within Microsoft Word, which she helped me get cleared up. I’m no expert on resumes or Microsoft Word, but I am much more learned than I was before. I owe my current career to Sandy’s unwavering, selflessness and willingness to help me get back into the “game”. Love you, Sandy x x
