He came in to a job that wasn't finished and he got right in and finished the job. Probably better than the original contractor. I would definitely hire him again.

We recently remodeled our home, and with antiques dating back to when my husbands family migrated here from Denmark four generations ago we did quite a bit of research on moving companies. My husband called Bob and set a date and time to come move the antiques to the garage. They were here at the exact time, with proper equipment and packing blankets to move the heavy pieces. We can't say enough good about how well Bob's company handled moving our antiques! Once the remodel was complete they came back and moved everything right back in for us with the same care and respect they showed the first time! I must say, we asked for and received quotes from large companies but, we don't think they could have done a better job moving our beloved family treasures. Bob is a pleasure to work with and if we ever need help again, we're calling Above The Rim. You won't go wrong if you decide to use this little company. They might be small but, they're mighty! Thank you so much Bob!

I removed a dog door from the back of my house and it left a large 18"x 24" hole in my stucco. Desert Pine Builders patched, repaired and painted the stucco to match my house. They did a great job!

Needed outside front door molding replaced and a new threshold. Not only does it look great, Jack also made our door look like new as the sun did a number on it. He also told my husband how to keep it looking like new. Also had a new screen door put in. Jack does a marvelous job and is very personable. No mess was left behind which was a bonus. Intend to use him again and will definitely refer him to friends/neighbors.

I hired Joseph to paint a high-ceiling wall in my house. Joseph was very responsive to my messages, and did a great job painting the wall. He was also very careful and thorough with his approach and work. He also quoted me a reasonable price to paint the wall. I strongly recommend Joseph for all sorts of construction related jobs around the house.

Francisco is the consummate professional and always available and willing to do whatever it takes. We basically gutted an entire 1900 sf house and did the remodel with Francisco remotely from another state and it was the EASIEST and SMOOTHEST remodel project I've ever done (and I've done a few)!! Furthermore, we got quotes from several others and Francisco's quote was the most reasonable of them all. Most importantly is that he actually LISTENS to what you want. Other contractors will try to sell you more than what you need or just bake higher end things into the quote directly without you even being aware of how much everything is costing. Francisco is completely transparent and he won't try to sell you more than what you want. The house turned out gorgeous!! Everyone who walks in the door says so and wants to know who did the work. Francisco continues to be responsive whenever we notice any little thing that needs fixing. And he is just a really nice and genuine person to boot! I have absolutely no hesitations in recommending him to anyone! If you are thinking about using Francisco, ask him for my name and number as I would be happy to talk to anyone about him!

I hired services done rite to tear out some old carpeting and install pergo flooring throughout the downstairs of my house, i was impressed to see how skillfully he layed it under my existing trim, rather than the original hired installer who actually cut into my trim around the door frame to make it fit. Cj was fast, professional and gave me a great price, a fraction of what the original contractor wanted. I will definitely use services done rite again!

Erica and her team basically achieved the impossible for me this weekend. I had only two days to accomplish a massive amount of work before I left to return to LA. Here's the list of projects - and no, I'm not making this up: - four interior walls (3,600sq ft house with great room) - entry way to the property - entire back patio - steps to patio - sand, stain and varnish great room breakfast bar - touch up throughout (including ceilings) - sand, fill and paint exterior fencing around dog run and storage area - scrape, skim and repaint pointing at the back of the house - repaint closet doors in guest room - touch up and paint ceiling in toddler room All this was done in a day and a half for a great price. On time. On Budget. Great Results. -

I originally hired Niki to help me organize my garage which had turned into a storage nightmare. I was immediately impressed with her work ethic and organizational skills so I asked her if she was interested in yard work. She not only cleaned my yard but she took the time and effort to make it look like it had been professionally landscaped. I will definitely use Niki's services in the future. She was a pleasure to work with and I'm very satisfied with her affordable rates. -K. Lystedt

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

    Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How do you choose a garage door?

When garage door repair isn’t an option — perhaps the current door is beyond fixing or you want to upgrade to a quieter, more energy-efficient model — it’s time to buy a new one. But choosing a garage door is not as simple as it sounds, even when you know the right size for your home. A wide range of materials, styles and finishes are available, and each factor influences the cost. Garage doors are made of aluminum, steel, vinyl, fiberglass, masonite, wood (typically cedar or mahogany), or a composite of several materials. They may be insulated against cold or heat. Traditional and modern styles include raised panel, carriage house or crossbuck. Most styles have window or arch options, and are available in different wood finishes and neutral colors. Because garage doors account for a large part of a home’s exterior, their appearance is usually a homeowner’s top priority. An attractive garage door can increase a home’s curb appeal and resale value.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

    • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
    • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
    • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
    • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
      • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.
