Introduction
I offer a unique service. I am genuinely a technical teacher with experience as a musical theater performer. I understand the demands of the industry, but my abilities as a technical teacher are unrelated. I am passionate about my students and honest without being mean or cruel. My approach is tailored to students, rather than being "one size fits all" and I feel that ANY student who comes to me deserves the best training available. I love watching my students grow and succeed. One week they might be coming to me crying- worried that they aren't making progress, or will never book work and the next they may make a major breakthrough or book a job they didn't think they had would get.

I have been taking voice with Michael for about a year and a half now, and I firmly believe he is the most thorough and effective teacher I've ever had. His techniques, exercises and sincere interest in my improvement has made a huge difference in confidence and performance. He is just amazing - and really cares about how well you do. Definitely book a lesson. You will thank me!

Working with Michael Jacobs has been an incredibly positive experience! Michael is a highly skilled, creative, passionate, and nurturing voice teacher, and lessons are always purposeful and engaging. He creates a safe space in his studio, allowing for plenty of risk taking, which essential for personal and vocal growth! I cannot speak more highly of him!

As a professional dancer, I entered into voice lessons with Michael being quite unsure of myself and completely lacking confidence when I sang. Michael has completely changed the way I approach singing and has really helped me find the joy behind it. Not only have I gained awareness about how to effectively use my body when vocalizing, Michael has taught me to connect to the passion and emotion in songs and really love to sing! Michael has also helped me tremendously in preparing for auditions, and under his tutelage, I have successfully booked work. Having working with several vocal teachers, I can confidently say that Michael is the best!

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Lessons are all 60 minutes in length. Rates are currently on a sliding scale from $80-$110 in Astoria/Skype and $90-$120 in Manhattan.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

When deciding on a teacher, I would try not to let price be a major factor. Even if overall cost is a major factor for you, having high quality training less often is going to produce a better result than more frequent low quality training. Lower quality training is more likely to lead to vocal problems and possibly damage.

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

Working with a voice teacher can be a very intimate experience. Singing in front of someone can make one feel very vulnerable, so it is important to find a teacher that you feel comfortable with. I always remind my students that lessons are the time for them to make mistakes and to fail. Lessons should feel like a safe time to experiment with new singing technique and new songs. One should never feel like making a mistake would anger the teacher.
