CELLO LESSONS IN BROOKLYN, NY / ONLINE
ALL AGES AND LEVELS
Hello! Thank you for visiting my page. Please read through this information before contacting me about lessons.
INTRODUCTION / ABOUT ME
My name is Mizu - I am a cellist, composer, performer, and recording artist. You may be familiar with my solo project MIZU. I create experimental electronic music through self-recorded samples of my cello and other instruments/collected sounds.
I have released several solo albums, perform actively across the world, and compose music for dance, film, and theater. My work has been featured in publications such as Pitchfork, The FADER, The New York Times, NOWNESS Asia, Bandcamp Daily, and New Sounds. My debut album 'Distant Intervals' landed in the Top 10 of the Billboard Classical Crossover charts upon its release in 2023.
I was trained as a cellist at Juilliard, where I received my bachelor’s and master’s degrees. I have always been drawn to both the classical repertoire and contemporary / popular music.
MY TEACHING
My aim is to instill and impart a love for music that can last a lifetime - laid down by a solid technical foundation, and developed and nourished through constant musical inspiration and exploration. I do not follow a particular “method”, but rather tailor materials based on the needs and interests of each student.
WHY ME?
- I have over 15 years of teaching experience, working with students of all ages (3-60+).
- I am a graduate of Juilliard, where I received both Bachelor and Master of Music degrees.
- I have given cello masterclasses at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music (Guangzhou, China); chamber music masterclasses and composition workshops at Cornell University, Manhattan School of Music, and Stony Brook University, amongst many others.
- I have taught chamber music at Juilliard Pre-College, and group cello classes at St. Ann’s School in Brooklyn.
- I am a former faculty member of the WHIN Music Project, a branch of El Sistema.
- My younger students (elementary through high school) have received perfect scores in NYSSMA and comparable regional exams.
- I am friendly! I prefer to think of myself as your cello-playing friend. I am never “professorial” or dogmatic - I am only strict when I need to be!
RATES / SCHEDULING
Once I have received your preliminary information, I will contact you with a quote and schedule a call to discuss a lesson plan that works best. Together, we’ll devise a lesson plan tailored to your or your child’s specific learning interests.
Consistency is an important part of the development of new skills - so it is important to have regular lessons. I often try to meet students once a week, for a minimum of one hour sessions. Shorter sessions are recommended for younger students only.
LOCATION
I teach mainly out of my studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn - but I am happy to arrange lessons in your home, or online. I often suggest online/in-person hybrids for those who live far away from me.
I also can give lessons in your home! I will charge a small transportation fee based on travel time to a student.
GROUP LESSONS
Group lessons are great for students who wish to learn alongside their friends, and can also be more cost-efficient for the individual! I typically recommend group lessons for up to 3 students at a time, and within the same age range/playing level. My group lesson rates are case-by-case; please contact me via my booking form for inquiries.
PROJECTS / OPPORTUNITIES
I organize get-togethers/informal concerts for all of my students, hosted in my studio space in Brooklyn. These will happen 2-3 times throughout the year. I also often organize recording opportunities for online students - I will play along to a piece of your choice as your personal accompanist!
I look forward to meeting you and working together!
