About this pro

How does your service stand out?

I'm a freelance drummer, producer, and educator with over 8 years experience of playing and teaching professionally. Lessons are either held at my studio in Williamsburg, BK or in your own home. Time keeping, feels, chops, reading, recording, grooves, and the study of various styles are just some focuses that I like to emphasize. More than anything, I love to see my students grow as drummers and musicians. The visible progress of my students is what keeps me inspired each and every lesson. For those interested in recording services, my Williamsburg studio is fully equipped with a great selection of microphones, preamps, and gear. Need vocal tracking, full band tracking, remote drum demoing, mixing, and/or editing? I'm able to accommodate. Visit for studio pics and and tech specs.

What do you enjoy about the work you do?

Every musical situation is different and those daily challenges are what fuel my fire.

    Amazing NYC Drum Teacher
Sam is a terrific drum teacher. He has been teaching my 9 year old son for over a year and we are excited by how much my son has learned and how much he enjoys playing the drums. Sam has inspired him and we are very happy that he has a hobby that he wants to pursue. Sam chooses fun songs that my son is excited to learn and to practice. Sam has a positive attitude and is organized and reliable. I highly recommend him.

    Drum Lessons
We have had a positive experience working with Sam. My son has been taking drum lessons for the past two years with Sam. He has been punctual, professional, (always upbeat) and delightful to work with. My son very much enjoys working with him.

Sam does a great job of imparting his skill and experience in a fun, engaging way. He makes it his business to provide context for basic technique and rudiment, which not only makes otherwise boring drills and exercise more enjoyable to learn, but results in more permanent retention and seamless incorporation of those fundamentals into my technique.

Sam Merrick is a talented and attentive educator. He was able to explain rhythms in a simple and accessible way. Most importantly, he makes learning fun. After studying with him for 3 years I give him the highest recommendation and can't imagine studying drums with anyone else.

My eleven year old son has been taking drum lessons with Sam for a few months, and his progress has been extraordinary. He performed with his band today, in their 6th grade music recital, and he sounded like a pro. He loves working with Sam, and since he started taking lessons with him, he's inspired to practice all the time. It's been a great experience all around.

What types of customers have you worked with?
-I provide weekly hour-long instructional drum lessons, focusing on a variety of aspects of the instrument. Every lesson caters to the needs and goals of that individual student. -When I'm not teaching, I do session drum tracking for various artists, jingle houses, and producers. I tour internationally with a number of artists as well.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Seek out a teacher who offers balance. A drill sergeant may offer beneficial lessons about technique and disciplined practice but won't necessarily provide the intangibles that will keep you interested and excited about the instrument. For example, I often like to teach through songs, especially ones you already know, as I believe there's a lesson in every song to be had.
