Introduction: I currently offer *guitar* and *music theory* lessons online only via Zoom. This part is where I talk about myself, but first, let me ask you a few questions: -Have you tried to learn a song by ear, but not sure about how to start? -Do you have difficulties visualizing and memorizing scales, arpeggios, and chords on the guitar? Or, you’re more advanced and you have: - Improvised with major and pentatonic scale boxes but have difficulties expanding and breaking them up - Learned modes, licks, voicings, and music theories but have difficulties incorporating them on the guitar ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I’m Roger, a Brooklyn based guitarist. I am a graduate of Berklee College of Music, where I studied guitar performance and jazz composition. I’ve got 25 years of experience studying and playing music of all kinds, from classical to pop, to rock, to jazz, on both piano and guitar. I had been through those difficulties myself. By overcoming recurring obstacles, I realize that learning music is in fact a journey with endless discoverings. Through listening, practicing and studying we discover more diverse and stylistic choices available on the instrument. Eventually, accumulating those discoveries, we hope to freely and genuinely express ourselves through the instrument, and learn to appreciate music and art on a deeper level. I want to help my students build the ability to self teach on this journey, so that they craft from not only the materials I share, but also from their own discovery. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ When you study with me, you can expect lessons structured around 2 things: -Improving your instrumental skills (technique, fingerboard knowledge) -Growing in your musicianship (establish the ability to study guitar & music independently, ear training, learning songs, music theory, harmony, and grooves) **To help you achieve those, I will offer: -clear and impartial analysis and advice -easy to understand *materials in PDFs (scale exercises, chords, voicing shapes and concepts, harmony and rhythm materials, harmony practice sheets, lead sheets, songs for you to listen to, and more) Those materials will help you visualize and apply a variety of: -Scales & Arpeggios -Chords, Other voicings and substitutions we’ll also work on: -Learning songs -Hearing and analyzing harmony changes -Transcribing -Establishing a solid time feel and rhythmic feel In the first class, we’ll take some time to figure out your specific needs, and come up with a plan to help you meet them. Whether you’re starting from zero and just want to learn how to play a few songs, guitar solos, and chord progressions, or you want to write songs with not just simple bar chords, and improvise over more complex harmonic changes in the style of jazz and fusion. I’ll meet you where you’re at and help you formulate a roadmap to get to your goals.

Guitar Lessons

I am taking jazz guitar lesson with Roger. He is very patient and professional in teaching. In his lessons, I not only get more familiar with guitar playing, fretboard expansion but also learn music theory, including different scales, modes, and chords. For improvisation, Roger can demonstrate various sounds with his guitar by applying different scales or techniques and he explain the content in a very clear way. I think he really helps me improve a lot not only in guitar playing but also the insights to different genres of music. Thus, I have more clear ideas about what I am playing and what sounds I am chasing for.

I'm a 9-5 working professional who loves to play guitar. I self taught myself for couple years. Soon I find myself playing the same things on the fingerboard and got tired of it. Roger's lesson helped me so much in terms of really making music out of the chords and scales I've learned. We listen to and analyze music in class. He demonstrates practical practice exercises to help me really hear what to play. I highly recommend his lessons if you need good advice to have a breakthrough on guitar.

He is also a awesome jazz guitar player. He demonstrates the sounds and playing examples on guitar making the theory on book so much easier to be understood. He is very nice and easy to work with.

Roger is a fantastic instructor. His lesson teaches how to read music and about the relationships between the notes, scales, major chords and minor chords. For me, I found his lessons great and it has given me plenty of material to practice with.

I started playing classical piano at 5, and guitar at 14. I graduated from Berklee College of Music, where I studied Guitar Performance and Jazz Composition. At school, I have composed, arranged and performed for ensembles and recitals in different sizes and styles, ranging from trio to jazz big band. I worked as an accompanist for Berklee's voice department for 2 years, where I performed and recorded different styles of music, including pop, rock, R&B, and jazz for students projects, vocal classes, and the school's summer program showcases in recital halls and Berklee Performance Center. I also worked for Berklee jazz choirs as a rhythm section player.
