About
I offer private online painting and drawing lessons for beginners through advanced students, focused on building strong fundamentals and helping you develop your own work. I currently teach painting at Columbia University and work as a professional exhibiting artist. My lessons are structured, supportive, and tailored to your specific goals. This is a great fit for complete beginners who want to learn from scratch, intermediate artists looking to improve technique, students preparing portfolios for art school, and adults developing a serious creative practice. In our sessions, you’ll learn how to accurately draw what you see, understand light, color, and composition, and build stronger, more engaging images. We begin with core fundamentals and gradually shift toward making the kind of work that interests you, whether from observation, memory, or imagination. Lessons are held over Zoom and are typically ongoing weekly sessions, allowing for real progress over time. My approach emphasizes both technical development and independent thinking, so you leave with not just skills, but the ability to continue working on your own. Many students start as complete beginners, and I tailor material recommendations to your level. I focus on ongoing lessons, as that’s where the most meaningful progress happens.

Kelsey is a fantastic and highly professional instructor who worked remotely one-on-one with my son on his anatomical drawing and basic painting and color skills for two years. I would highly recommend her as she comes equipped with an extensive and impressive curriculum and tailors it to meet each student’s individual needs. We truly loved working with her.

I started taking lessons with Kelsey back in autumn and quickly saw a marked improvement in my work as well as my enthusiasm for the hobby. I'd wanted to focus on line work, human gesture and emotion, and within five weeks I'd gone from making two-minute sketches to working on a full-blown, shaded portrait. Throughout her lessons Kelsey has always been courteous, professional and attentive to detail. She's able to communicate complex concepts step-by-step, breaking them down into practices that beginners can understand and emulate. I'm very happy to have picked up drawing as a hobby and that's in no small part thanks to these classes!

I arranged for several sessions for my 11-year old daughter who wanted to learn more than she gets in school. Ms. Shwetz is a warm, insightful teacher who took my daughter at her own speed, offering valuable lessons in technique and approaches while working on a project. Kelsey takes a hand-on approach that encourages--rather than tries to pin down--my daughter's originality and interests. She is flexible to work with and attentive to her students. Most importantly, my daughter told me after the first lesson, "Finally, someone who takes me seriously" rather than just treat her like a kid who draws. Although I only have experience with how Kelsey works with kids, I would highly recommend her for any type of lesson.

I am 70 and always wanted to be able to draw. Never could do anything much beyond stick figures. Faces? Forget it. But look what I've accomplished after about 15 lessons, copying a Matisse portrait using conte crayons (and I work very slowly)!!! Kelsey is a patient and intuitively gifted teacher and a delight to sit across from as I learn. I'm so glad that I found her. I highly recommend that you study with her too. My second project is the self-portrait on the right, again with conte crayon. I still can't believe that I did this, but Kelsey made it happen.

FAQs

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

In the first session I typically ask the student to describe what they're looking to get out of these lessons as well as share any previous art they've done in the past. We jump right in making a painting or a drawing, and from there I tailor a specific curriculum based on the student's needs and strengths.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Kelsey Shwetz is a Canadian born painter who currently lives and works in New York. Shwetz received her MFA from Columbia University where she currently teaches Painting as an Assistant Adjunct Professor. She is a two-time recipient of the The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant, along with grants from Canada Council for the Arts and the Mayer Foundation. She was awarded fellowships by the Vermont Studio Center, The Choy Family, Ellen Gelmen, Columbia University and CanSerrat Residency in Barcelona. She has exhibited in the United States, Canada, Paris, Slovakia, Stockholm and Mexico; her most recent solo exhibition was at Half Gallery in LA.
