Introduction: I offer remote piano, music theory, and composition lessons over Skype and Zoom - please check out the video introduction in my portfolio to see what the online classroom looks like! All classes include emailed assignments, recaps, and support. Beyond piano and it’s related skills, lesson topics I can cover with you can include: songwriting, music theory, recording, production, synthesizers, beginner voice, and more! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As a life-long student of music, I know how overwhelming the subject can be. In my classical piano roots, no one taught me how music really worked or how to write. After 10 years of study I became highly proficient at reading the notes on the page and moving my fingers to play them, but hit a wall when it came to truly expressing myself on the instrument. That’s a frustrating point to reach. To get over that barrier I jammed with as many other musicians as I could find. I studied topics like music theory, songwriting, and recording. I practiced and experimented constantly, discovering a vast ocean of artists and styles in the process. Eventually I found myself able to play authentically and uninhibited, the way I had always wanted. The happiness I found in true creative expression finally clued me in to what music and art is all about and I’d like to help you learn this skill as well. When you take piano lessons with me we’ll cover all sides of musicianship, with a focus on building creative ability. Your classes will be varied and fun, from useful music theory to piano exercises designed to build strength and coordination. We'll play a wide range of pieces from classical works to rock, from bebop jazz to indie pop, breaking the music down to learn why and how it works. And we'll work together to help develop your sense of rhythm, melody, and harmony so that you can sit down and truly express yourself in impromptu jam, join a group, write a song, or to feel comfortable learning on your own. Please get in touch to set up a free consultation call, either over the phone, over Skype, or Zoom.

So happy to have found Kris. I’m an adult with no music background and I was quite intimidated by the prospect of learning the piano. Kris is not only patient, but extremely knowledgeable and passionate. He not only teaches me the techniques, but also how to appreciate music and the science behind it. He tailors the lessons to my needs and sends very detailed notes. Within a few weeks I started to improvise on my own (laughable by anyone who understands music, but I was having fun and that’s what’s important to me). I’m very much inspired by Kris and would highly recommend him.

Details: 45 - 64 years old • No, the student cannot read music • No formal training • What the teacher recommends • No, the student does not have either • 45 minutes • My home, venue, etc. • Remotely (phone or internet)

Kris is a truly wonderful teacher. I had zero musical experience when I started my piano lessons. He explains things in an understandable and approachable way, answers all of my questions and is super pleasant to work with. I could not be happier with my lessons and would highly recommend Kris to anyone looking for a teacher.

So happy with these lessons! Kris is a very talented musician and teacher, and I'm very glad I selected him from Thumbtack. I'm just a beginner and I can't believe how much I have learned. Kris is very patient and always accommodating in regards to scheduling. I would definitely recommend Kris to others looking for a piano instructor.

I am so happy to have found Kris as my daughter's piano teacher! She is 8 years old, had some introductory, minimal piano lessons at a summer camp last year so basically a beginner student. We started once-a-week lessons in January and 4 months later...L loves playing the piano! She plays when she is getting ready for school, she plays when she gets home from school. I have to remind her about the week's lesson but more importantly, she is experimenting and enjoying making music and this is encouraged by Kris as well as the fundamentals. I have seen her confidence grow, be proud of her development, and practice towards a goal. Since the lessons, when she listens to music she sometimes tries to play the chords or mimic playing it while we are in the car. I can tell she is thinking about how she could play songs she enjoys. Wow! Kris is patient, focused on the student, provides clear guidance and tailors the lessons to her level. For example, if she needs more time to practice a newer concept, he understands this. He also challenges L to stretch her ability a bit each week which is perfect for her personality. He has a calm, positive, and encouraging presence. I am so appreciative of his dependability and flexibility to make up a lesson the two times we weren't able to make our scheduled lesson due to scheduled events. It's clear he cares about the consistency of her lessons/practice and is reasonable about the occasional scheduling hiccups in families. I highly recommend Kris!

FAQs

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

In our initial messages back and forth, we'll establish what your interests are, and why you're here for lessons. From there we'll schedule a free consultation where we can discuss your goals, lesson specifics, and see if it would be a good fit. Once we've figured out the best plan for you, we'll set up lesson number one, and hit the ground running!

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I started on the piano at age 8, and have stuck with it since. While majoring in music, I worked as a choir director and played in a variety of bands and original projects. Later as I moved into music production I learned more about arranging and writing for a larger ensemble, skills which I have put to use in a number of musical projects, bands, and solo releases.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

After teaching a few friends on the side, I decided to make the transition to full time musician after moving to Portland in 2013. While I supplement my teaching with work as a session musician, producer, writer, and keyboardist-for-hire, teaching is my main business as I find it the most rewarding. After building up enough of a student base I was able to transition to doing this full time, letting me focus more on building what my school can offer.
