Introduction: I have a background grounded in both the arts & humanities and academic scholarship. That's my way of saying I believe learning requires both context and practice. I feel the tutor/teacher & student relationship is one of collaboration. I want you to succeed! I do this not by being a task-master, but by encouraging, nudging, and hopefully empowering you to develop beyond our sessions. I love the classroom and learning. Many students don't realize how much a teacher learns from them as well. I found Dave for my sister, to help her find her voice as a writer. I was looking for someone that would approach writing coaching not as a job, but as a calling- and I nailed it with Dave. I can't speak highly enough of the passion he brings to helping her succeed as a writer, and his skills and creativity he brings to crafting the pathway for her to get there. Dave worked with my sister during her 8-week, college-level summer english course. They met for a few hours each week on Google Hangout (no need to be in the same place anymore). He helped her break down assignments and make game plans to tackle them. He helped her read like a writer- a skill he feels is foundational. Most importantly, though, he diagnosed her "stuck points"- the things that really challenged her- and cultivated her skills in those areas. On top of his expertise as a teacher, Dave's EQ for the human side of writing is off the charts. Writing is personal, and to let someone into your space as a writer is an exercise in vulnerability. Dave adeptly navigated that space- knowing when to talk and when to listen, when to rally and when to give tough love. Working with Dave has truly been transformative for my sister.

Dave did an incredible job with helping me become a better speaker and fight anxiety about giving presentations. The sessions were very well-rounded. He incorporated relaxation and breathing techniques, and taught me how to engage an audience. And he was incredibly flexible with scheduling meeting times. I highly recommend Dave for both last minute prep work and long term training.

I have always been interested in acting and learning about the art. As a true beginner, I didn't know where to start or who to hire. I recently hired Dave and not only does he have an extensive resume, he took the time to structure a customized regime for me to fit my personal goals. The assignment was to answer a three part question regarding The Myth of Sisyphus and three of Kafka's parables in the form of an essay. Dave helped me to develop my ideas and dig deeply into the text, providing excellent feedback at each stage in the writing process. He encouraged me not to shy away from my opinions, even if it means disagreeing with a highly regarded philosophical text. Outstanding teacher!

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Since I've had some bad experiences with students being a bit less than committed, I I have come to feel it necessary to do so, I price by the hour, with a 3-hour minimum. I also request a 24-hour cancellation notice. If within that time period, the person is responsible for the total cost of a regular session. I do quite a lot of prep outside my sessions, so if a student shows up, it tend to sap my energy!
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I first and foremost listen to them. I want to know what is frustrating them, what they're stressed about, what kinds of specific objectives they have, in order to provide them the support and service they need..
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BA in Literature from Wheaton College, an MFA in Acting, and an MFA in Creative Writing. Because of my education and training, I am able to address the diverse needs of my clients.
