FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I charge my clients on an hourly basis, at $50 an hour. The reason I do this, as opposed to project-based invoicing is that nine times out of ten, project-based invoicing leaves the designer feeling taken advantage of. The nature of this job is a lot of back and forth, a ton of figuring out what feels right and looks good. And the amount of back and forth varies, all based on the client. Since a designer can't know how much of a vision a client may have at the get-go, it doesn't really make sense to over-quote or under-quote. My invoicing is 100% transparent. I use a viewable spreadsheet that my clients can view at any time to see what I've worked on, on what dates, and for how long. That allows them to manage me in real time, and make sure I'm executing what I need to be executed by the pre-determined deadlines.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I'll always start off with a face-to-face meeting, whether it be on location or via Facetime or Skype. It's crucial to me that I get a sense of the person I'm working with, and they get a good sense of me. The next step is an overview of the job at hand. We discuss what a successful execution of the job looks like. With that in hand, I can create a more detailed quote for the client, which they can then sign off on. After that, we're collaborating!
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My experience in Wordpress dates back to 2010, when I created my first site. Since then, I've created a new site for my various companies every other year. So my experience comes from the process of actually doing the work and seeing what does and doesn't succeed over time. Fun fact: my college degree is actually in dramatic writing, which I'm very happy to report is my other job.
