Do cats have to get groomed?

It’s not crazy to have your cat groomed. Grooming will keep your cat’s fur soft and silky as well as give you early warning about any health concerns. Regular grooming can also help reduce the volume of hair your cat may be shedding and keep your longhair kitty cool if you live in a warm climate. Professionals competently groom your cat and are trained to manage them if they resist being groomed, while you may get scratched doing the same task. The national average price for cat grooming is $50-$70. Pet grooming prices may vary based on the task. For example, a bath and brush for shorthair cats may be $15, $20 for medium-hair cats, and $25 for a longhair. Cat groomers can also keep your cat’s ears cleaned, trim their nails, and provide haircuts if needed. Average prices for haircuts can vary from $30 to $95 or more, depending on whether the cat is shy or aggressive and whether their coat is in good condition, matted, or otherwise difficult to groom.

How much should cat grooming cost?

Keeping your cat groomed is an important part of maintaining their good health. The national average cost for cat grooming ranges between $50 and $70, with prices varying based on where you live and the services you request. Your cat’s temperament can also affect grooming prices. Scratching and hissing during a groomer visit can raise rates an average of $5-$10, or more, as hazard pay. Larger cats and long-haired cats that take longer to groom will also usually cost more. Here are some examples of cat grooming average costs:

  • Shave down or lion cut: $35-$60. These cuts preserve the hair around the face and tip of the tail but shave down the entire body. The lion cut is often recommended for extremely matted hair is exceedingly matted, for extreme heat, or for cats who are suffering from hairballs.
  • Ear cleaning and nail trim: $30.
  • Nail trim: $10-$15.
  • Bath and nail trim: $45.
  • Bath and sanitary trim: $55. A sanitary trim clips the hair on a cat’s behind to prevent fecal matting in longhair cats or cats that have mobility issues.
  • Bath, blow-dry, brush out, nail trim and ear cleaning: $40.
  • Full haircut, bath, and nail trim: $45-$95, depending on matting.

Where can you get your cat groomed?

Cat grooming keeps your cat’s fur tangle-free and clean. Most businesses that offer dog grooming or general pet grooming also offer cat grooming; some businesses even specialize solely in cat grooming. Look for a professional who has training grooming cats or belongs to a professional association such as the National Cat Groomers Institute, because cat grooming techniques can be different than for dogs. Cat grooming can encompass a wide range of services. In addition to haircutting, hair detangling and hairstyling, cat groomers can trim cat nails, clean out your cat’s ears, give flea baths, demat, trim facial fur, bathe and even blow-dry your cat. Health safety and etiquette requires your cat to be in good health and have all their vaccinations before using grooming services.

I’ve utilized other cat groomers for the past 8 years and I wish I found LuAnn (Knot...Really) sooner. She was kind and supportive of my large cat even though it was her first time grooming her. Other groomers I employed needed over 4+hours/multiple appointments in order to groom my cat and LuAnn only needed 1.5hrs and still accomplished more tasks including bathing, drying, brushing, mat removal, claw trimming, ear cleaning, etc. I would definitely recommend LuAnn and will be booking her for all of my future cat grooming appointments!

I was very pleased with Fur the Love of Pets and would recommend Rachel to anyone looking to get their pets groomed. We brought in 3 cats and she handled them all very well. My cat hates grooming and gets very aggressive but as you can see in the picture Rachel did a fantastic job shaving her!

I was extremely pleased with Ms Debbie Sparks and her assistants at the Amherst Boarding Kennel. She responded immediately to my request for cat grooming. She was extremely polite and courteous when we spoke on the phone and we made an appointment for the next day! I also asked about nail trimming for my dog and she responded with "sure, you can bring him in too and we can take care of that also". I took this cat in when a friend could no longer care for her. My friend told me she was taken to Fins, Feathers, and Fur for gromming her extremely long fur. I called them 6 or 7 times to try to make an appointment. They never returned a single voicemail. I am a lover of all animals. I have 5 cats and a dog. When I spoke with Debbie Sparks she was very helpful and informative. She told me about a grooming program they have that covers several grooming sessions and can be used for different animals. I have 2 other long hair cats and will definitely purchase this grooming package in the near future. I would highly recommend the Amherst Boarding Kennel for grooming and in particular Ms. Debbie Sparks and her assistants! They were all super awesome with me and my animals!! Thank you again Debbie!! GREAT JOB!!!

Annie is AWESOME. I was super nervous about getting my cat groomed for the first time and she made the whole process so easy (for me and my cat!). Super sweet and friendly, and let me be involved in the process so I wasn’t freaking out with nerves! I’m going to recommend her to all of my friends and colleagues. Thanks so much, Annie! You’re the best!

Annie was great. Our Ragdoll cat had some difficult mattes and needed them removed. Annie took her time with Fluffy and ended up shaving her matted areas. Then gave her a complete groom and nail trimming. She also showed me what brushes work best on our Ragdoll and also gave us some tricks at trimming our other cats nails. I will be calling Annie for a regular appointment going forward and would highly recommend her.
