As a custom home builder, we just finished a $1 million new build and when we went to take the plastic off of the windows, it was not pretty. The adhesive was stuck to the windows and was a MESS. We had never experienced this before and were in a complete panic to get it taken care of before the homeowner saw it. Tim came in and had a solution to remove it and he did an amazing job. To say that we were impressed is a major understatement. We will definitely be using him on the next house we build to do the regular window cleaning!

I needed a wall built in a retail store, flooring and painting. This guy was so fast, I could barely keep up with him. The prices were reasonable and he's great at cost effective solutions.

Darren did a great job on my wall damaged from melting snow on the roof this winter. He came back to put an extra coat on an area of the wall that did match exactly, even after I had fully paid for the job. He takes great pride in his work, I would highly recommend him!

Mr. Zybert helped me resolve a clogging issue in my kitchen sink. Originally I thought it should be a fairly quick and straightforward project, however the problem turned out to be much more complicated than what I thought. After realizing the clog couldn’t be resolved by ordinary methods such as plunging and chemical draining, he came back with a specially designed extended snake to diagnose and identify where the problem area is (it has to be done precisely to save the time and money because it is a long pipe that penetrates through the kitchen wall and extends all the way down to the basement to connect to the master pipe). He carefully cut two portions of the pipe. Voila, these two pipes he cut exactly held all the “scums”. Instead of putting the two old cut pipes back, he installed a cost-efficient sectional structure that allows easier diagnosis from the side as an alternative to the traditional way to snake through the passage from one end. Mr. Zybert is knowledgeable and highly competent for his work. I am in particular impressed by his patience, precision, cost consciousness and commitment to quality results. I will certainly call him again if I have problems around the house in the future and will highly recommend him to others.

Everything went well. Brian worked very carefully and efficiently. He was prompt, courteous, and friendly, and completed the precarious task of hanging my large painting high up on the wall over a descending stairwell using one of those multi-function ladders.

Peter Runfola is highly skilled, professional and more importantly, a very honest contractor. Peter has performed work in our 100 year old home and apartments for the past 3 years and we have always been very satisfied with his work. He’s an artistic painter who repairs plaster walls, refinishes floors, antiques furniture and so much more. He’s given me more decorating ideas than an interior designer! I can’t say enough about his innovative suggestions that have made my life so much easier like installing roll out shelving in my Kitchen Island and pantry. Peter is a pleasure to work with, always very pleasant and respectful. We wouldn’t hesitate to call upon him again.

Todd did a fantastic job repairing the drywall and repainting my back hall, and added a "loft area" to use some of the dead space in the landing. The work was completed in a timely fashion, and each day, Todd went above and beyond in cleaning up the area. His professionalism is top-notch, and I plan to hire him again for other projects in the near future.

We needed a handrailing to be installed in order to pass a home inspection. The challenge was that the stairs to the basement did not have a wall to install the railing on. Robb made some suggestions and was punctual in his arrival. I expected the most basic 2X4 installation but instead was incredibly impressed with a customized handrail that had perfect rounded ends and was actually quite stylish. Robb's pricing was incredibly fair and I recommend him to anyone who needs some work done.

Dan painted most of the walls in my house and the walls are smooth and even. He also completed a bathroom remodel in which he came up with a creative solution to oddly placed plumbing and built me a beautiful custom vanity and matching built-in shelves. I get many compliments on it and it looks professionally done!

Cabinet Interiors is the only company/team that I ever want to handle any remodel project for me. Not only are they as good as Chip and Joanna, they - the 2 of them - handle all aspects of a remodel(I'm talking electric, moving vents, fixing builder errors such as unlevel floors, tile, painting & recommend color/style, design/architect)... just unbelievable work and artists in their trade! They have handled 3 projects for me; one was a whole house remodel, including gutting a kitchen and installing all new cabinets, floors, tearing out a wall, and much more. They have also completely remodeled an oceanfront condo; which sold almost as soon as they were completed with the work. The buyers said that they wanted the unit EXACTLY as it was shown and purchased it as their personal 2nd home! The last project was a kitchen remodel in a very old home; which presented them with MANY builder challenges. I am grateful to know Jeff & Colean and fortunate that a previous client recommended them to me. Lastly, and very important, their work is quality, they are honest, fair, flexible and custom builders.

Dave gave us a quote that was less than the others we received, which actually made me a little nervous. I was quickly relieved when I saw the quality of his work. He worked quickly, but didn't take any shortcuts. Everyday he cleaned up and it was as if he made no mess while he was here. Despite removing multiple walls and doing a lot of electrical work, Dave kept us informed every step of the way. We are impressed with the quality of work, level of professionalism and overall experience. I highly recommend Elliot construction and he will be the first one we call for future projects.

We LOVE our remodel! Mike is great to work with. Our project started out as just the kitchen and then as any job, turned into quite a larger project. He assisted with every part of the project from the permit to the finishes. He has an abundance of resources, so if something comes up during the project and he can't tackle it, he knows someone who can accomplish it and the best part - at reasonable rates and great service. I wouldn't look anywhere else for someone to work on our home. Thanks Mike!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
