Milton Suqui of S & L Tree Service, and his colleague, Freddie, helped me remove a 60' tree, 18" diameter at the base, that had fallen into a tidal river adjacent to our property. The tree needed to come out immediately otherwise it would become a sieve catching winter blow down and other debris, and jeopardizing our little dock. Get all the estimates you want from Thumbtack.com, but do yourself a favor and give Milton the first chance to do an onsite "final" estimate. Not only did Milton give me the best price, but he and Freddie came with equipment, ready to go the day of the on-site survey, and immediately got to work. Remember, the tree was in the river, so there were some obstacles along the way, including submerged boulders which made the task more difficult, but our little team succeeded in accomplishing the goal. Using block and tackle, pulleys, ratchet straps, a pair of neoprene waders, and a couple of hearty chainsaws, the job was handled efficiently. All of the pieces of the stumps, and branches, and brush were piled neatly above the flood zone to create a new home for woodland creatures. If they can remove a large tree from a moving, tidal river, imagine what they can do for you on dry land. Highly recommend.

I recently had a tree come down in my yard. I called Dave and he made himself available to remove the tree as quickly and efficiently as possible. He is professional and talented. He was able to dice the tree, the branches, and brush and remove it off my yard with ease. It would have taken me a week to do what he did in a day and a half, and that's saying alot because I'm a builder and carpenter . I work around people like Dave everyday and he is without a doubt a top notch worker but even more important a top notch guy.

When a tornado knocked three large trees down in our yard I went on Thumbtack to find a tree removal service. Within minutes Jorge responded to me and offered to give me a free estimate that day. He came right on time and gave me a very reasonable estimate for the work. He also offered to remove another tree that was dying. He was able to complete the work the very next day. Jorge and his team worked very carefully and removed all the debris. My yard was completely clean after the tornado! I am so pleased with his work. Mr. Rivera is the epitome of a professional. He was fast, efficient, punctual, and fair. I highly recommend him for all of your tree removal needs.

Pedro was prompt and attentive. He’s the first lawn professional I hired for my new home and certainly one of the hardest workers I’ve had to the property. I anticipated a small team, but Pedro assured me he could single-handed meet all of my needs. He worked consciously and meticulously for hours until he’d completed every request I made, including some last minute tree trimming and decorative edging. His pricing was reasonable and his demeanor was respectful and professional. I’ll definitely be hiring him again and I encourage you to do the same!

I submitted a request for quotes last night. Several contractors indicated interest in our tree trimming job. We went with Lee partly because he indicated he was going to be in the area on another job. He and his coworker did a great job cleaning out an old tree that had significant overgrowth and dead branches. They mulched on the spot and did nice job of cleaning up. My wife and I are both pleased with the results. I would highly recommend Leon. Not only did he do a nice job, he was friendly and personable.

I first hired Renew Renovations to remodel my dining room. Everything from removing a wall, sheet rock, texture, paint, wainscoting, new floors, new recessed lights and hanging my chandelier. I was so impressed by his knowledge, professionalism, cleanliness and of course my new dining room! I had them return to my home to remodel one of my guest bedrooms. They refinished my original hardwood floors, and textured and painted my walls. I would hands down recommend Renew Renovations to anyone and everyone. I am still in Aw that they created/gave me the dining room of my dreams!! Did I mention he helped me with pretty much the whole design aspect!!!

Punctual, and very professional. Came with his crew and they cut three trees completely down, and some additional branches. The guys worked hard, with no disturbance, and cleaned up amazingly, you couldn't even tell anyone was at the property a few minutes ago cutting 80 foot trees! Pricing was also extremely fair. Highly recommend, and definitely will hire for additional gardening, landscaping and tree cutting services.

My name is Jay and I have a property in newark that had a couple of trees that were leaning on my house and the neighbor’s house. This was creating a dangerous situation in which one bad storm would have put the tree through my house. I had several different contractors come and tell me ridiculous rates to complete the necessary work. I hired M. H. Construction and they resolved this matter for me efficiently and quickly, and for an unbeatable rate. The trees are no longer touching my home or my neighbor’s home. I hired M. H. One day. And the next day the work was completed. I call that rapid response! I will definitely hire them again for any future landscaping need! Thank you.

My husband and I have recently purchased a home which needed a backyard transformation. After a few estimates, Tyler, by far, had the best price and the most details on how he was going to meet our dream of having a functional and picturesque backyard for our family. Tyler and his crew are very professional, honest, knowledgeable and trustworthy. He is always available to answer our questions and to keep us updated on his progress. Tyler is a great guy all around, and his work speaks for itself. We are extremely happy with our progress towards our backyard transformation! We definitely recommend Tyler and his company for tree removal and excavation! Stay tuned for pictures of our final product!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
