Having met Dr. Anna is one of the best things that's ever happened to me. I had been in therapy for over a decade with various counselors, but now I know the difference between a therapist and a Therapist. She is warm, compassionate and creative, no two sessions are the same, and she seems to have an incredible repertoire of techniques at her disposal. She is always goal-oriented, makes sure that results are really happening, and always explains everything so clearly as you have never heard and never understood before. She has the greatest sense of humor, her academic knowledge is amazing, and her fine-tuned sensitivity boarders on the mystical. Yet she is always funny, down to earth, and real. I've never laughed so much in therapy sessions before! :-) I am so grateful, ... because I am finally discovering what "free" and "happy" really mean!

Therapy with Alison worked for us. It took awhile. There were a few months when nothing seemed to be changing. My wife and I were having the same fights, stuck the same way. I wanted to quit, but my wife insisted and I'm glad she did. Things started to click. The same things Alison had been pointing out to us suddenly made sense at a different level. Maybe we just needed to hear it over and over, or maybe the sessions we were doing got us ready, but suddenly we were able to change. Alison had been assigning us homework, but we rarely did it. When we started doing the homework, our marriage got better faster. But Alison never judged us when we didn't do it. She was always patient. She also saw both sides and helped us look at things instead of blaming one person, as a "dance" we get stuck in.

I’ve never had someone that cared so much about me as a whole. It wasn’t just therapy for her. Her dedication and passion helped me get through the roughest times in life. I don’t think I’ll ever find another therapist as wonderful in my life.

I have a long history of positive and productive therapy, a lifelong commitment to holistic healing and personal growth and 14 years of 12 step work. While all of those supports have brought me much insight and a robust tool box for a happy and highly functional life; none has provided entire clarity around and subsequent relief from lifelong patterns and blocks I have never been able to access and therefore heal. I came to Lorraine in a state of relative crisis and in a matter of months, found myself leaping forward, addressing and resolving core issues I have struggled with my whole life. Her down to earth, relatable personality and style combined with her profound intuition and considerable expertise as a therapist and healer have offered me the most rapid and deep healing I have ever experienced. There is, with Lorraine, an energetic exchange that can only be experienced not described. I am infinitely grateful to have been referred to her. Nicole N.

As a counseling practioner, I use discretion when selecting my own therapist and marriage counselor. Tina quickly picks up the pulse of each individual as well as the dynamic between them. Her incisive and insightful comments are offered judiciously. She maintains high standards of integrity viz. HIPAA. Her availability is flexible for working couples. She balances being a caring person and professional. I highly recommend her for couples and individual therapy based on my experience with her in both areas. S.

Words can not begin to express how thankful I am that I have found Dr Pace..He has this wonderful ability to make you feel comfortable from the moment you walk thru his door. I have seen therapist in the past but have never felt as good about my therapy as I do with Dr Pace.

For years I tried conventional therapy, but felt like I couldn't resolve any of my deep issues. In just one session with Debbie I was able to release some of my childhood trauma and I felt so much energy shift. Debbie is an amazing person to work with as she has so much love, caring and gentle support to offer who has helped me to open up very easily to her. She understands exactly what I'm going through and how to help in a peaceful and loving way to release the trauma and stress to find more peace within, be more loving to yourself and others, and to stay grounded. I can't thank her enough for the guidance and support she provides that resonates with my own truth and just feels right, helping me to grow into a higher vibrational being. Thank you Debbie from the bottom of my heart. Agnes

So far, so good. I have held two sessions with Mr Seitz and especially the second meeting appeared to be quite effective, or at least satisfactory. It is perhaps too soon to assess whether the therapy actually fulfills my expectations in terms of results (defeating insomnia), but I find Mr Seitz' approach professional and promising.

Alexa creates a calm, non-judgmental, and safe environment for her clients. I was very unsure about my decision to see a therapist but after our first meeting I felt so assured. Her office is quiet and accommodating and even if I was sick or out of town, I could request a skype call in place of an in-person appointment. A year or so in to therapy, Alexa had a review with me of all things we'd gone over and it was such an amazing view in to how much I had grown and developed. Nothing ever felt too big or too small to share and with Alexa's guidance I was really amazed with how far I'd come.

Dan Minuchin is an outstanding family therapist, mental health consultant, trainer, teacher and clinical supervisor. I have had the fortune of working with him and observing him in all of these roles over the past several years. I initially worked with Dan about 10 years ago when I was a supervisor at agency that provided family therapy and services to families struggling with adolescents and families involved in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems. In this setting, he provided case consultation, supervision, and training to a team of social workers and family therapists. This model included live supervision and the use of a one way mirror. Dan would also accompany therapists on home visits to provide live consultations in the family's home. I later became a director of another similar family service program. I was able to hire Dan to provide Structural Family Therapy training to my entire clinical staff, as well as consultation, individual and group clinical supervision. His guidance and training was very well received by my staff and their skills as family therapists improved significantly. Dan is really a master trainer and has worked as a family therapist, teacher and trainer for several decades. He has an incredibly diverse personal and professional background and experience working with families of all walks of life. He is sensitive and well informed of the needs and experiences of families of color, immigrant families, LGBTQ families, blended families, Jewish Orthodox families, families struggling with substance abuse and mental illness, delinquent teens, children with special needs, and families dealing with divorce, loss and separation. I have referred many families to Dan and I feel confident that he is able to work with the most complex families of all backgrounds. Dan is thoughtful and empathic and has very high ethical standards. His structural and strategic approach to addressing problems is highly effective and families often will see progress in a short amount of time. I am a family therapist and clinician as well, and Dan has provided me with outstanding clinical supervision and guidance and has been instrumental in my own professional growth as a therapist and clinical supervisor.

I've been struggling with anxiety and anger issues since teenage years, and have tried therapy in the past but never stuck with it because I always found myself getting impatient with the therapists or the process. However, Dr Eskalyo slowly but efficiently helps me realize the benefits of psychotherapy, by digging deeper into my subconscious mind. She never makes me feel judged, or pressured. Scheduling is flexible, which works with my crazy work schedule. She's also very cooperative and patient with paperworks for my insurance. I highly recommend Dr Eskalyo, especially for those who are skeptical but would like to try therapy.

My Emotional Healing-sessions with Dr. Fischer were more than revealing and highly rewarding! She navigated me through exercises, which exposed me in a gentle but straight way to my own self, including things I felt, but didn't want to feel, things I felt, but had pushed away, and things I knew, but didn't have the courage to encounter. - It is a masterpiece of therapy, if you can create this environment of trust and safety to your client in a short amount of time as she created it for me in order to help the client to open up to go "All The Way". Dr. Fischer has that talent. I felt truly safe with her and venture to say that I experienced great progress after my sessions with her. If you're going through a hard time, if you are wondering, why all these things are happening to you at this moment in your life, if you feel overwhelmed, hopeless, fatigued, burned-out, depressed or out-of-proportion-angry, if you need some guidance to understand yourself better in a psychological and in a spiritual way, I think, you will greatly profit from Emotional Healing-sessions with Dr. Fischer. I recommend her services highly.

I've been working with Abe for over a year and from the first session he's proven invaluable in helping me understand and work through many issues. His combination of breathwork and bodywork (similar to yoga but much less movement and for shorter periods of time) plus emotional understanding and connectivity results in a supercharged therapy session that leaves one feeling invigorated and confident. Abe has been a true partner in my journey to better self awareness.

I really appreciate all the help Walesca has provided my family. When I lost my mother in 2013, my then 6 year old, took the loss pretty bad. I was so lucky to come across the bereavement services offered by Walesca. Through group therapy, my son was able to talk about his loss and share with other children experiencing the same. I also decided to join a bereavement support group for adults moderated by Walesca. I learned how to cope and understand my grief in a supportive environment. At the same time, I also learned how to be supportive to my son. I highly recommend Walesca and her amazing services.

I have been seeing Stefan for 3 years now, and I can honestly say it was the best decision I ever made. He assuages any fears that one might have with going to therapy, or from what they might fear from traditional therapy. When I first came, I was an unhappy person, not liking myself very much and projecting that feeling to everyone around me. I blamed everyone else for my problems, while thinking I truly had a handle on things...as things around me were just getting worse. Learning to not only unconditionally love others, but to unconditionally love myself has made me a better father, a better friend, better in business, and an all around better person. I completely recommend seeing him to anyone who wants to learn how to love themselves more.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

    • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
    • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
    • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
    • Overcoming addictions.
    • Managing chronic illness.
    • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

    • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
    • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
    • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
    • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
    • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
    • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
    • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
    • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
    • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
    • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
    • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
    • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
    • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
    • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
    • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
    • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
    • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
    • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
    • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

    How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
