I hired David to help with a clean up in my backyard. It was a surprise for my husband while we were on vacation. From the beginning he was very easy and honest to deal with. He kept me updated while he was working on his progress. My husband was speechless when we came home to a brand new backyard. It was so clean! No more rusty sheds, shrubs, tiles from construction etc. It was more then I could of asked for! We will definitely be using him again for our projects & I highly recommend him to anyone looking for great prices & a hard worker

Gardening is a great joy to me, but I've been so busy with work my beloved backyard grew completely out of control. Joel and his team saved the day -- they weeded by hand, shaped overgrown bushes and trimmed trees, hauled all the garden waste away and left my place beautiful. Will definitely call him again!

I requested a quote for lawn maintenance, and TaskEasy responded right away with the lowest estimate. The individual was professional and friendly, although admittedly, I didn't understand the details of the service that TaskEasy provides. I thought I was speaking directly with the lawn mowing company, but rather, it's a service that links you with lawn care specialists. They work with contractors and service homes all over the country according to the representative. Ultimately, I signed up. Their bi-weekly service rate was the lowest price around. Hopefully they send one of their contract companies out to my home as soon as possible and make a believer out of me. I was assured that I could cancel their service at any time, and they have a legit website, app, and business ratings.

Marvin was fantastic. He submitted his estimate almost immediately after my post and his price was very reasonable. I live in Florida, so we had to iron out the details of the job over the phone... He was always available, responsive and accommodative. His crew did a great job! They arrived right on time , cleaned up the backyard, mowed the lawn, and trimmed the bushes. I hired him for the remaining of the season and was very pleased with the work.

Douglas and his team of 4 did a great job building our patio in a difficult spot of our backyard. Around our pool/deck area. He offered me ways to save money and even worked with my budget. He didn’t nickel and dime me and even bought me some material without charging. He gave suggestions about how to further improve the backyard landscaping even though I didn’t employ him for that reason. Thanks brother I will certainly use you again.

After getting three quotes for the job, Kevin was most fair with a negotiated price for the removal of a VERY old and large tulip poplar in the backyard of a residential neighborhood. The tree had to be removed over the house. Not only did his crew remove the tree, debris and grind down the stump, but cut down random trees and bushes, topped a few fruit trees and removed that debris also! The crew were great! Kevin is personable, business-like and most easy to work with. I highly recommend Jersey Tree Care!

We hired Jose to help us revamp our lawn in the backyard. He really did an exception job! Having myself lived in many homes...knowing a thing or 2, Jose is very professional, efficient and knows how to properly get the job done! He will leave you with a product that will last! We recently hired Jose to help with some dry wall. Again, he did a great job. We 100% recommend Jose and his team!

I’m so so glad I found Daniel! I wanted to put up lighting in my backyard but hadn’t no idea how to accomplish it. Daniel was prompt, professional, and gave thoughtful advice about options to consider and the pros and cons based on design and how it might feel in the space. He then drew up a sketch to map it out and plan what we would need. He came back the very next day and the end result of his work was beyond anything I could have imagined. He even helped me do some last minute planting while there because I had some plants waiting to go in. His work is clean, precise and very professional and a great value. He’s also kind, friendly and clearly has the mind of an engineer + designer, a rare combo to find. I plan to hire him back in the spring to help me with landscaping. Highly recommend!

Our backyard was a disaster. It had so many branches and leaves it looked horrible. EW Landscaping did a professional job, they gave us back our backyard that we hadn't had in a long time. Their cleanup was phenomenal. They made sure that all the grass, driveway, and street was clean of all leaves that had been blown around. Our neighbor also use them after seeing the job they did for us. Their prices are extremely reasonable and they work is excellent. I would wholed-heartedly recommend them and use them again.

I hired Jems Landscaping to back fill my backyard with soil and reseed the entire backyard. They were great to work with and they all knew what they were doing. It's been a week since the project was completed, no grass just yet but time will tell and it generally takes about 2 weeks for any grass to start coming through.

Was in desperate need of a backyard makeover after buying my house 4 months ago and fighting nonstop to bring the yard back to life myself. I finally gave up and let the professionals handle it. Anthony, Chris and the team fought a downpour and delays but got the job done in a day, 1450ft of sod, planted grasses and plants and roses, mulched the flower beds, put in a walkway of blue stone pavers. I finally have a yard I am proud to look at. Cant wait to see it in about 2 weeks when the sod starts to grow and the plants roots take hold, thanks again guys

The team did a 'refresh' of my small, urban, landscaped backyard. They repaired a broken water feature pump, replaced old bushes with new, matching bushes, and also stained the fence. The end result was fantastic and they did a great job. A couple of things that could have been better: it took a long time to find a date to do the work, the price and work estimate was lower than anticipated (they had to sand off the stain by hand rather than using a sander), and the water feature pump had to be repaired several times before it finally worked so they had to come back a couple times. However, Steve was very responsive, honest, and nice. Would recommend them highly.

Greenwood Robinson did a complete makeover for our 20X50 backyard in Brooklyn, including fencing and tree removal and with no direct access. Sam was extremely creative and innovative throughout the entire process. He had a great team as well, that we enjoyed working with. They followed through on time commitments and communicated well regarding any changes required. We highly recommend Greenwood Robinson. You will not be disappointed.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.
