Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do cats have to get groomed?

It’s not crazy to have your cat groomed. Grooming will keep your cat’s fur soft and silky as well as give you early warning about any health concerns. Regular grooming can also help reduce the volume of hair your cat may be shedding and keep your longhair kitty cool if you live in a warm climate. Professionals competently groom your cat and are trained to manage them if they resist being groomed, while you may get scratched doing the same task. The national average price for cat grooming is $50-$70. Pet grooming prices may vary based on the task. For example, a bath and brush for shorthair cats may be $15, $20 for medium-hair cats, and $25 for a longhair. Cat groomers can also keep your cat’s ears cleaned, trim their nails, and provide haircuts if needed. Average prices for haircuts can vary from $30 to $95 or more, depending on whether the cat is shy or aggressive and whether their coat is in good condition, matted, or otherwise difficult to groom.

How much should cat grooming cost?

Keeping your cat groomed is an important part of maintaining their good health. The national average cost for cat grooming ranges between $50 and $70, with prices varying based on where you live and the services you request. Your cat’s temperament can also affect grooming prices. Scratching and hissing during a groomer visit can raise rates an average of $5-$10, or more, as hazard pay. Larger cats and long-haired cats that take longer to groom will also usually cost more. Here are some examples of cat grooming average costs:

  • Shave down or lion cut: $35-$60. These cuts preserve the hair around the face and tip of the tail but shave down the entire body. The lion cut is often recommended for extremely matted hair is exceedingly matted, for extreme heat, or for cats who are suffering from hairballs.
  • Ear cleaning and nail trim: $30.
  • Nail trim: $10-$15.
  • Bath and nail trim: $45.
  • Bath and sanitary trim: $55. A sanitary trim clips the hair on a cat’s behind to prevent fecal matting in longhair cats or cats that have mobility issues.
  • Bath, blow-dry, brush out, nail trim and ear cleaning: $40.
  • Full haircut, bath, and nail trim: $45-$95, depending on matting.

Where can you get your cat groomed?

Cat grooming keeps your cat’s fur tangle-free and clean. Most businesses that offer dog grooming or general pet grooming also offer cat grooming; some businesses even specialize solely in cat grooming. Look for a professional who has training grooming cats or belongs to a professional association such as the National Cat Groomers Institute, because cat grooming techniques can be different than for dogs. Cat grooming can encompass a wide range of services. In addition to haircutting, hair detangling and hairstyling, cat groomers can trim cat nails, clean out your cat’s ears, give flea baths, demat, trim facial fur, bathe and even blow-dry your cat. Health safety and etiquette requires your cat to be in good health and have all their vaccinations before using grooming services.

They were a few minutes late but did a great job with my cat. Professional, organized and very gentle with Demi. Extremely happy, I'd recommend them to anyone who needs a cat groomed. I am sure they are as good with dogs.

The team of two came in and did a great job on our super senior cat, Bertie. Since the pandemic, we haven’t been able to get him groomed. The team was professional, gentle and efficient. Will definitely do again in the Fall.

This was my first time hiring a cat groomer for a house call. Considering COVID-19 and my experience with other groomers I was willing to try something new. I have 24 year old cat and was always SO concerned as to how she was treated during the grooming sessions her in her advanced age. (yes, that’s right, my cat is 24-years old) Despite her age, and no longer having her front teeth, there are only two things Chelsea, my cat, hates in life; getting her temperature taken at the vets office and getting groomed by a perfect stranger. My sweet and cuddly Chelsea turns into a savage and fierce wildcat. ND Grooming had such great reviews I was eager to give them a try. They were very responsive and we made the appointment in timely fashion. They were very professional compared to some of the other groomers I was considering who didn’t get back to me for days to confirm the appointment. To make a long story short, Chelsea did put up a considerable fight but what I appreciated most about ND Grooming is that they stayed calm and were very patient. They came prepared with all the tools necessary to offer full service! I was totally impressed. I also was super grateful that they were willing to take breaks in the grooming session. Chelsea might have put up a fierce fight but she’s still got an elderly heart and needed breaks to calm down and catch her breath! ND Grooming was kind, respectful, and efficient! It was the best cut I’ve seen on Chelsea in the 4 years that I have been taking her to groomers to handle her long and dense coat that must be clipped off for the Summer season. I put a pic below of her long hair in full glory! 😜 Chelsea was super happy not to travel in taxi cabs to and from the grooming salon. I also never liked that she would have to be completely isolated from me when handing her over to a groomer who is a complete stranger to her and me. I appreciated that I was with Chelsea every step of the grooming process and I believe it made her calmer and more tolerant of the grooming process with me in the room supporting the perfectly capable and experienced groomers. I definitely recommend ND Grooming to my cat mama sisters out there. ND Grooming exceeded all my expectations in the comfort of my own home. Chelsea passed out soon after the session was over. After the fight she gave she slept well into the next afternoon. I’m happy to report she pranced around my apartment the next day happy to be free of her dense fur coat for the Summer season. Thank you ND Grooming!! 🙏🏾💜

My Maine Coon cat, Gracie, has extreme issues about going to the vet. Actually, she has issues about leaving our apartment under any circumstances. I'd allowed her long fur to get very matted, and knew I had to do something about it, but couldn't get her to agree to go to the vet for a lion cut. She made her feelings clear with squirming, screaming, peeing, scratching. I found Little B's in-home grooming on Thumbtack, and decided to try having Gracie get a haircut at home. I can't say enough good things about Beryl. She was kind, calm, thorough. She did a fantastic job in spite of Gracie's screaming objections. I'll hire her again if the need arises, and recommend her without reservation.
