Varian was fantastic -- super-responsive, able to provide same-day service on short notice, offered a very competitive rate, arrived on time, and was very professional and friendly. I needed an AC installed, and he even provided a piece of equipment that I should have had myself, but didn't have on hand. He got the job done in about 15 minutes, if that, and I was totally satisfied with the quality of the installation. Would 100% recommend him.

Joseph did an excellent job installing a wall lamp above the bed. He was courteous, friendly and efficient. He checked with me during the installation to make sure the lamp was being installed to my specifications. He even texted me to let me know there was a delay on the subway and that he might be a little late. In a city where finding a good handyman is often challenging, Joseph is a find! I will definitely call on him again when I'm in need of the kinds of services he provides.

We would highly recommend Argento Fence to anyone looking for a fence. Luis was very professional and knowledgable. After meeting with him and getting a quote, we knew right away that he was the person for the job. He was honest and gave us professional advice for our project. He was the only person that brought actual photos of his work and gave us examples. We are very happy with our fence. The installation was excellent and we have received a lot of compliments from our neighbors. He did exactly what we wanted. We would definitely recommend Argento Fence to friends and family.

Darin literally came to my rescue and finished the job I started of installing wire shelving in my closet. He did a very good job, was punctual and very professional. He completed the job in just over an hour and actually took the time to look at another issue I had with a light fixture before he left. I would definitely hire him again.

Ted did a great job on our fence. From the very first day he gave our estimate to the very end- he was on point with it all. What ever question we had- he'd quickly respond back. The day he was scheduled to show up at 9am, we opened our door at 8:30am and he was out there ready to work on our fence. I would definitely recommend him- hands down. Thank you Ted!

I requested a quote for repairs to a fence that had been damaged a few months earlier when a tree fell on it. Brian responded almost immediately with a preliminary quote and set up a time to come to the property for a visual inspection. He did a good job keeping me up to date on when the special-order materials were due to arrive and letting me know when my job would be done. He was prompt, helpful in his suggestions, friendly and true to his word. This small job was dismissed by several contractors previously – they would come to inspect the property and waste my time because I would never hear from them again after they left promising they would be back with a quote. Small business owners these days seem to have their pick of jobs because most treat homeowners with small jobs as if we’re bothering them. I have a more significant project I would like done in the next year or so and have now asked Brian for a quote on that. It’s as if most of them don’t realize small jobs done well lead to customer loyalty and a good working relationship the homeowner is happy to continue with for years to come. I would recommend Fratturo Home Remodeling without reservation.

I have had David Marx do many jobs over the last few weeks to transform our second home which had become somewhat dilapidated. He has changed light fixtures, fixed closet doors, hung a new TV on the wall, added grab bars in the bathroom, repaired a ceiling and wall damaged from a leak, installed a new ceiling fan and new blinds. I am very pleased with the work he has done. He is very professional and knowledgeable and a very hard worker. He is neat and takes care to thoroughly clean up at the end of the day. My only criticism is that he often runs late. Yet once he is on the job he never takes a break. I have a degree in Interior Design and as such I appreciated his creative approach to finding solutions to problems. Thanks to Dave my husband's "man-cave" has been transformed. I highly recommend him.

I hired Joe and his team to install baseboard molding and I was under a time crunch. They sent me the insurance docs within an hour after he left my apartment for my coop board and assured me he would complete the work within two days. He kept his word and delivered on craftsmanship. The baseboard molding came out great. We also had him hide the cable lines behind the baseboard molding which was something his foreman recommended. What a great idea! Thanks for your help Joe!

Don and his partner were extremely efficient and helpful in mounting my TV. They were clearly very experienced, and even came back later in the day when I couldn't make the first appointment time. The TV looks perfect on the wall, and it was all done for a very reasonable price. I would recommend this company to anyone looking for small jobs around their home or apartment.

We had a new roof, gutters, a fence and some other small home maintenance work done. The craftsmanship of all of the work, especially the roof, was superbly done. It's a colonial with particular edges which required hand made solutions to bring it back to its natural glory and that is exactly what was done. We were clients and sometimes students, as time was taken to explain the process, materials being used, alternate solutions etc to ensure that we were comfortable with the job. We would and we have recommended All Remodeling and Construction to others.

Greenwood Robinson did a complete makeover for our 20X50 backyard in Brooklyn, including fencing and tree removal and with no direct access. Sam was extremely creative and innovative throughout the entire process. He had a great team as well, that we enjoyed working with. They followed through on time commitments and communicated well regarding any changes required. We highly recommend Greenwood Robinson. You will not be disappointed.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
