My experience was good, it was just a little hasty and sloppy. There are still a few stains on my couch that need to be cleaned. It just seemed really rushed. The guy I had was very nice and he did a good job, but there was water on the floor and my hardwood floors were scratched from moving the couch. Just would have appreciated a little slower pace.

Daniel and his team did an amazing job laying down my hardwood flooring. They were professional in every aspect. Showed up on time, polite and paid attention to every detail. Daniel communicated with me throughout the process and the price I was quoted was the price I paid. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but the site would not let me post one. The floor looks great and I would highly recommend DL Flooring . I will definitely hire Daniel again!

I hired Elegant Hardwood Floors, to sand and poly my old wood floors... Bryant came out immediately and gave me a very fair price. I didn't need to go back and forth with the price, he was very straight forward and reasonable. I was tempted to hire others with high reviews, But I couldn't pass up his price along with his experience and knowledge....LIST of pros- 1. Punctual! and on time everyday! 2. Gave my floor life! They look beautiful! Plus he replaced several damaged wood planks at a reasonable price. 3.left my place clean. 4. He traveled over 50 miles to my place, but distance was not an excuse. He was there! And on time! I really have no cons, he forgot to apply poly to a spot, but that wasn't a problem ....he immediately return at my earliest convenience and took care of it right away. It was very smooth....and he really enjoys what he does.....he is a no nonsense person , who wants to provide an excellent service with no gray areas..... I will definitely hire him again....

Out of more than 7-8 contractors that I enquired, I chose C&A Improvements to sand, stain and refinish our old hardwood floors. The job required lot of prep work like ripping the carpet, removing the nails, filling the holes etc. Carlos Netos, the owner of C&A came across as a very decent and honest person, a thorough professional who clearly understood our requirements immediately and gave us a detailed estimate. He also suggested a variety of options and also cautioned us with the DO's and DONT's during and after the job. This really helped us in preparing ourselves and making decisions. The people who came to work knew their jobs well and were very punctual. Very satisified with their quality of work and overall result. I highly recommend C&A for their reliablity, quality of work, punctuality and their price! I wont think twice in recommending them to my friends! Satish I.

I recently inherited my grandfathers house and as a young women on her own it was intimidating having to deal with all the renovations that needed to be done. I submitted a request through thumbtack to have 1000 square ft of hardwood floors refinished after being covered up with carpet for almost 50 years, Wascar reached out to me within minutes to set up a time to see the house and give me an estimate. I had an appointment with 3 different companies and the quote I received from Acosta Floors was not only the best price but the owner also took the time to ask me questions about the work I wanted done and explained the differences between the various stains and sealers I could use to complete the process which none of the other companies I met with bothered to do. As a first time home owner with no experience with renovations my nervousness was put to rest, I felt I respected and confident putting my trust in Wascar. He came early that morning on the date we had scheduled and had the sanding completed the very same day. Arriving from work later in the evening the house was clean and there was absolutely no reside left from any of the dust created while they had been sanding. By the second day the floors had been stained and sealed and the work had been fully completed. I am beyond happy with how they turned out, the floors look absolutely incredible, even exceeded my expectations. I am so grateful to Wascar for his service. The quality of his work and professionalism with which he runs his business is truly appreciated, I would recommend him to anyone looking to have hardwood floor refinished in their home. I have added some pictures and will add more once I am able to walk through the house and get shots of the bedrooms, closets, entry way and living room. Thank you Wascar!

Luis accommodated me for a free estimate and shortly after completed my hardwood floors which included staining as well. He assisted me with getting beautiful floor vents for my central air and also purchased and installed the saddle needed prior to the flooring job. He worked late and arrived very early to enable us to be back in our home within a few days. The floors came out amazing and he was professional throughout. I highly recommend using L&M Flooring.

It is my pleasure to recommend the excellent work of Rick Doggett who was the general contractor for a remodeling project of my apartment in Jersey City. From the initial interaction and proposal phase through construction and the timely completion of the job, Rick and his crew performed at the highest level of professionalism, work ethics, and dedication. The work involved a complete re-structure of the internal floor plan, moving walls, installing new fixtures, hardwood floor and carpet, electrical, plumbing, and painting, while communicating with an owner who was not on location. I would, with no hesitation, engage Rick in any future construction or remodeling that will come-up. Thank you Rick and crew for a wonderful job.

We hired Anthony at the last minute to repair a nasty pet stain on our landlord's hardwood floors in order to retain our security depost. He was very understanding from the first phone call and came out within a few days to survey and provide quote. Quote was very fair and we were able to schedule the work for a few days later. The floors look great, we highly recommend!

I don't normally write reviews. After thinking about it for a few days I decided for serveral reasons to leave Albert and his team a review. We had about 800 sq/ft of hardwood refinished by Albert's team (Frank, Robert, and Winston) over a period of three days. Before the work was done, it was apparent Albert's level of dedication, professionalism, and care that he gives towards every project. We chose him over several other companies, and were not disappointed. Did we run into an issue? Yes, we did. And it is how the situation was handled that speaks that much more for Albert and his team's overall professionalism and dedication to customer service that made me write this review. The color that we chose, when sampled on the floor, looked amazing. However, when we tried to scale the color up to do the whole floor, did not look like the sample. We had the entire floor sanded/coated and when we saw the color, we were not happy. Albert and team tried to fix without the need to resand, and when it was not possible, partnered with us as a client and developed a solution that was acceptable to both parties. This is why I recommend Albert's Flooring. It is when there are problems, and when things do not go the way planned, that true characteristics come out. And I can affirm this: Albert and his team do not shy away from a challenge, and because of this we worked through the challenge in a professional and friendly manner. The end result? Absolutely gorgeous floors. I highly recommend Albert and his team, and I want to personally thank Frank, Robert, and Winston for helping bring my wife's vision to a beautiful reality. Well done!

Excellent job! Excellent prices! I was a picky customer, and they made sure everything was just right! We did a huge remodel, took down walls, redid all the hardwood floors, and gutted two bathrooms. Our house looks brand new now and we couldn't love it more! Highly recommend!!!

Our hardwood floors were worn out in certain areas and turning black. Bryan gave us a great estimate and was able to work with us in scheduling a good time for everyone. We were away while the floors were done - sanded and refinished. They were beautiful!! All the black areas were gone and any scratches and gouges were gone! The color is beautiful and the satin finish is perfect! Bryan did an excellent job and I highly recommend him.

If you are ever looking for a company that you can trust to provide you with a quality home remodel, choose Jevon O'Neal and Dynamic Home Creations. Jevon O'Neal and his crew at Dynamic Home Creations remodeled my one and only bathroom. They took it from "The Pit" (it was really bad from years of neglect by my home's previous owners ) to its new name, "The Palace." Jevon O'Neal continually came up with ideas and suggestions to make the remodeling plan even better. He and his crew worked quickly, efficiently, and professionally. And, most important, Dynamic Home Creations does excellent work! I am thrilled with the finished room. One final note: while they were gutting and then rebuilding the room, they were respectful of my home and me. Everything was cleaned at the end of every day (within reason); paper was put down to protect my 100-year-old hardwood floors every morning, and so on. This is important to know if you have never lived through a home remodeling job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
