Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What is the cheapest way to move long distance?

The cheapest way to move long distance is to plan ahead. This allows you to capitalize on several money-saving strategies. For example, you may consider renting a portable moving container. These are often cheaper than moving trucks, though moving truck rentals are a great option for moderately sized homes.

Planning ahead also gives you time to start looking around for free moving boxes and supplies. You might also be able to snag discounts from moving companies if you book far out in advance and ask movers for a deal. Try not to move during the peak season (spring or summer), as prices tend to be highest during that time.

Contact the best long-distance movers in your area to get free estimates and figure out a way to save money.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

How do I choose the best long-distance moving company?

First, compare the best long-distance moving companies by performing an online search for national or local moving services.

Pay close attention to the moving companies’ ratings and reviews. When reading the reviews, take note of any feedback related to the movers’ pricing, professionalism, ability to work quickly and whether the company has damaged customers’ belongings. You should also check to make sure the moving company has the proper license or insurance within your state.

Once you’ve found a few movers that fit your criteria, contact the companies to get free estimates. Compare quotes between moves to decide if a quote is fair. And keep an eye out for any deals and discounts movers may be offering during non-peak seasons.

What should I pack first when moving?

First on your packing checklist are non-essential items you don’t need to access for the next couple of weeks or so. This can include things like holiday decorations, extra towels and collectibles.

Then, move on to artwork, entertainment items and special kitchenware you hardly ever use.

As moving day draws near, pack children’s games, jewelry, artwork and all linens except for an essential set for each household member.

Next up is kitchen equipment, items in your medicine cabinet, bathroom supplies, laundry supplies and electronics.

One to two days before your move, pack furniture, rugs and tools.

On moving day (or a few days before), pack your clothes, bedding, cleaning supplies, and other necessities like snacks and food.

We had a great experience with Simply Moving. The movers arrived on time, worked efficiently and carefully and completed the move out (in NY) and move in (in Cleveland) without any issues. We were nervous, given the long distance move and our desire to have our belongings with us as soon as possible after the move out, but everything came very fast. We were extremely happy and satisfied! Thank you!

I wish more companies would be as professional, polite and detailed oriented as Simply Moving. Dreading a long distance move from NYC to SoFL and the packing up went seamlessly today. Met with Emi for an onsite and felt SM would be right choice. Chanel and Patrick arrived on time and were a pleasure to work with. Very pleased so far and hoping the remainder of the move ends as smoothly as it began.

Communicating with David to arrange the move was a pleasure. I felt very reassured and unstressed immediately. Flexible can-do attitude. I had a long distance move and his guys must have put in a 16 hour day with all the moves they did including mine but they remained polite smiling and professional. Everything arrived in one piece! I would use them again and again and again. Wonderful service. Thank you!!

After reading reviews and exploring various companies, we decided to go with Simply Moving for our move from Manhattan to Denver, CO. Not only was the price quote $500 less than some other companies, the movers were courteous, arrives on time, and took good care of our items. The delivery arrived 11 days later to our home in Denver - and everything came in great condition. The process was very smooth from start to finish. I would definitely recommend this company for both short distance and long haul moves!

Alex and his team were exceptional! I checked them out initially because their estimate was 20% lower than most other moving companies. Good reviews helped in the decision too. Alex provided excellent communication and got the necessary insurance paperwork off to both the move-out building and the move-in building immediately. Mine was a long distance move from NYC to upstate NY. The guys showed up within the agreed upon time frame and were quick and efficient. Everything arrived in a timely manner and in good condition--a first for any of my many moves. I highly recommend Outbox Moving. I plan to use them again in the next 6 months.

Hired Simply Moving for a long distance move from New York City to Washington DC on short notice. They were extremely responsive and were able to accomodate my move even though it was only 2-3 weeks out. The crew arrived on-time at 8AM the morning of the move and packed my entire apartment in 1 hour. For context, the crew I used to move-in took 3-4 hours. They then drove directly to DC (even let me ride with them for no additional charge) and again unpacked everything in 1 hour. Even helped repair some furniture that had been damaged by the prior crew, again at no additional charge. Had a great experience and highly recommend using them!

Hired Simply for a long distance move from NYC to Atlanta. The process started out great: the price was fair, movers showed up on time and did a great job packing and loading, and Simply held our belongings for one month (incl. in price). Since moving our things out of storage, though, we have had no contact from Simply about estimated delivery windows. We've contacted our customer rep and the office countless times now, and they always promise to pass the message to a relevant party who will call us back. But we have never gotten a call back. We currently have no idea where our move is or when it might arrive in Atlanta.

I moved long distance from NYC to Seattle for a new job. The guys from Simply Moving offered me a very competitive quote and great service all around. No hidden fees or bait and switch as with other moving companies - the quote was what they charged me and nothing more. I had to pay a small storage surcharge but that was because I made them hold my things for more than a month as I was looking for an apartment. But I was happy to pay that. They were very easy to deal with in what was an extremely stressful time for me as I was getting situated in a new city. All my stuff arrived in good condition. Would use them again for sure!

Happy4moving is the BEST!! Look no further for a long distance move. Elsayed and Hanna did an absolutely amazing job for us with great work attitude. They helped us move from NYC to Philadelphia in a day and tirelessly worked from 9AM to 9PM at an unbeatable price! I underestimated how much stuff we had so based on the job I posed the Happy4moving team arrived with their small truck. I was concerned that we would have to throw some furniture away BUT Elsayed and Hanna made the extra effort to fit EVERYTHING! “ How many movers will spend those extra two hours to do that for you with a smile? We also had a heavy king size mattress and an adjustable base in a different apartment in the same building. I felt bad asking for their help at 8PM after a long day but as you may be able to guess by now they did it for us! That’s what you call GREAT customer service. 5 stars!

I could not express my gratitute enough for John and his team! They saved the day! Long distance moving (from NYC to RI), last minute hire The original moving company I hired was a mess and told me they were not going to make it at 11am on the day of the move. And I got so lucky that John and his team was able to come at the very last minute notice on that very day!! I called them after 1pm and they took care of all the insurance (nyc condo building requirement) and arrived at 3pm! I couldn’t thank them enough for everything! They were professional, punctual and quick and took good care of all my furnitures. They came with all equipment, and was able to finish the loading within 3 hours.(Including dissembling the furnitures) They arrived at my new place late night, and was super courteous and tried to keep the noise at the minimal level for our new neighbors. And of course they were quick and reassembled all my furnitures! I was super stressed out when I called John and he was so patient and ensured me that they have it covered. Highly recommend this company to anyone who needs to move, especially if your move involves a NYC apartment building that has crazy restrictions on insurances and moving time.
