Introduction: **Please note that all painting classes will be conducted remotely via Zoom. In my classes I emphasize two things: creating a new way of seeing, and practicing accuracy in what you see. We move through exercises that develop creativity and work through the fundamental technical components of making a drawing or a painting. Each class builds upon the tools we've developed from the last so students come away with a comprehensive understanding of art making, rather than a step-by-step formula. We work together to not only increase technical proficiency and achieve specific goals, but to develop the confidence to make art anywhere the mood strikes, whether it be painting at your kitchen table or sketching in a coffee shop or a hotel balcony.

I started taking lessons with Kelsey back in autumn and quickly saw a marked improvement in my work as well as my enthusiasm for the hobby. I'd wanted to focus on line work, human gesture and emotion, and within five weeks I'd gone from making two-minute sketches to working on a full-blown, shaded portrait. Throughout her lessons Kelsey has always been courteous, professional and attentive to detail. She's able to communicate complex concepts step-by-step, breaking them down into practices that beginners can understand and emulate. I'm very happy to have picked up drawing as a hobby and that's in no small part thanks to these classes!

I have been taking lessons with Kelsey and it has been an amazing journey. Her class is fun but at the same time I am learning the science and technique with painting. At the same time, I am leaning how to draw as well. I am a chemist and I work in the pharmaceutical industry. With my type of work it is very structured, stressful at times and no room for mistakes. So the painting classes with Kelsey has given me the opportunity to relax, express myself and even appreciate the beauty of mistakes and not always having order. Now when I look at artwork I appreciate color, hues, and depth. Thanks Kelsey for taking me on this journey in world of art, color and expression. Attached are some of my work, note the bike painting is in progress.

I arranged for several sessions for my 11-year old daughter who wanted to learn more than she gets in school. Ms. Shwetz is a warm, insightful teacher who took my daughter at her own speed, offering valuable lessons in technique and approaches while working on a project. Kelsey takes a hand-on approach that encourages--rather than tries to pin down--my daughter's originality and interests. She is flexible to work with and attentive to her students. Most importantly, my daughter told me after the first lesson, "Finally, someone who takes me seriously" rather than just treat her like a kid who draws. Although I only have experience with how Kelsey works with kids, I would highly recommend her for any type of lesson.

I am 70 and always wanted to be able to draw. Never could do anything much beyond stick figures. Faces? Forget it. But look what I've accomplished after about 15 lessons, copying a Matisse portrait using conte crayons (and I work very slowly)!!! Kelsey is a patient and intuitively gifted teacher and a delight to sit across from as I learn. I'm so glad that I found her. I highly recommend that you study with her too. My second project is the self-portrait on the right, again with conte crayon. I still can't believe that I did this, but Kelsey made it happen.

I signed up with Kelsey for 10 private lessons to learn how to work with oil paints. I'm in my early 50's and this is something I had wanted to do for years. If there is a level before "Beginner" that would have been where I was starting from. We met at her loft in Greenpoint for 2 hour sessions. First, her friendly personality, patience and calm energy were the perfect foundation for a comfortable learning experience. We started with the basics and progressed at a level that was tailored for my abilities. I never felt self-conscious, judged or rushed. Very important things when you're learning the tools of creative expression. I would highly recommend Kelsey to anyone looking to explore the world of oil painting, whether they think they have any talent or not. She's the best.

FAQs

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

Usually how I structure classes is the first class we do a few basic warm-up drawing or painting exercises so I can see where you're at and take a look at any other work you've done recently. Then we can talk about if you have a specific project in mind, how long you'd like to take the lessons for, what you're hoping to achieve etc. so I can tailor a curriculum exactly for you and your unique strengths and interests.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Kelsey Shwetz is a Canadian born painter who lives and works in Ridgewood, Queens. She is currently an MFA Visual Arts candidate (2022) at Columbia University and has been a guest lecturer at UCLA, Pratt Institute, and Laguardia Community College. Shwetz has exhibited in New York, Miami, Germany, Slovakia, Toronto, and Montreal. She was awarded fellowships at the Vermont Studio Center, Columbia University, and CanSerrat Residency in Barcelona and grants from Canada Council for the Arts, the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, and The Mayer Foundation. Her most recent solo exhibition was at Brethren Gallery in New York in 2018.
