My methods of teaching vary depending on how old my student is and their current level. For example, with a young beginner I will start off by teaching them the scale. (DO RE MI FA SOL LA TI DO) and showing them how each note correlates with a specific pitch. I will then sing the warm up with them a few times until they can do it on their own. I also like to do rhythm exercises with my younger students for example I will clap a rhythm and have them clap it back to me. I will assign repertoire that is appropriate for their level. An example of this could be the little mermaid song 'Part of Your World'. If I am teaching an intermediate student I will do warm ups up and down the octaves on vowels e-eh-ah-oh-ooh, I will also do staccato exercises as well as teaching breathing techniques. Adequate repertoire will be assigned perhaps "Caro Mio Ben". If I am teaching an advanced student, I will work on technique, stage presence, as well as proper singing posture and exercises to help transfer between passaggios (registers) in their voice.
I like to keep my students motivated. I like to set goals for myself as a teacher, and also expect my students to set goals for themselves. An example of this could be the student's goal to attend three auditions per year, or they want to learn how to sing for a school talent show, or they are preparing for NYSSMA/ABRSM.
