Introduction: I capture unfiltered emotions as a San Diego-based event and portrait photographer. I shoot parties, brand events, performances and anything else you can throw where people have a good time. I generally shoot in an energetic and candid, photojournalistic style, but I also take stylish posed photos when clients and circumstances ask for it. I've shot more than a hundred events during my ten years as a professional event photographer and my work has appeared in Time Out New York, the Wall Street Journal online and Milk Studios' Milk.xyz among other publications. Our happiest memories rarely happen when we're saying "cheese" for the camera, and I take pride in photographing the genuine smiles and laughter that erupts when the punchline lands or everyone's favorite song comes on.

Matt is an exceptionally talented photographer with the creative and technical skill to capture the essence of ballet. A live ballet performance is one of the most challenging venues to photograph because it requires precise timing of fast-moving dancers in difficult low light conditions. And there are no second chances. During Nutcracker season he photographed several performances with internationally-acclaimed dancers from New York City Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet and Carolina Ballet. Matt delivered an incredible number of stunning images with dancers at the absolute peak of their jumps and positions. In addition, his beautifully composed images accurately captured the color, lighting and mood of each performance. Matt is a true professional, a pleasure to work with and is recommended unequivocally. Bravo!

I was blown away with the work Matt did. I hired him to take photos of an international spiritual leader who was giving an intimate talk in New Jersey. The venue was crowded and had terrible lighting and I was worried we wouldn't be able to get decent photos. But Matt did an incredible job capturing the joy we could see in the speaker, and one of my family members wanted to blow up and print out the photos because he said they captured the spiritual leader's true essence. The group that organized the event also loved the job Matt did and are using his photos in an international online publication. I highly recommend this photographer!

Matt helped us with on set photography for a few film shoots. He is gifted in his ability to capture candid and photo-worthy moments while not affecting the natural flow of an event. Matt is excellent at capturing the mood of a scene. His range allows him to move between intimate, more controlled environments and dynamic, less unpredictable ones with ease. I would definitely hire him again.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I generally charge a minimum of $350 to cover an event, though the final number is often higher depending on the event length and specific requests.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
With a new client, I typically will have a conversation about what they're looking for in terms of the mood, specific shots and any references they might have. After we agree on deliverables (including the delivery time, formats etc.), I'll draw up a contract. Once that is signed then I ask for a 50% non-refundable retainer to book the date with the remaining amount to be paid on the shooting date. I typically do one round of edits, but in special circumstances I'll do more.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I received photography training while earning my master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University.
