(+) Suki fulfilled the expected tasks of a cat sitter -- providing food, filling the water bowl, and scooping the litter box. She sent daily photos. She was pretty quick to responding to my texts. Suki's rate/cost is affordable compared to other cat sitters, especially professionals (-) Although she sent daily photos, they were sometimes just blurry snaps of my cat's back. From the photos alone, it did not seem that Suki spent much time with him. Rather felt like she was merely showing me that she "checked in" to see my cat. I was disappointed to return home and see that the curtains were down when she said that she will make sure they are up.

Joan was good, she came to our home during a snow storm and arrived extra early to training our 3 month old Shih Tzu. Joan is friendly, very knowledgeable about nutrition and training for dogs. She brought lots of treats and toys for our puppy to play with and she spent time getting to know him. By the end of session puppy was sitting on command.

Jenn is incredible. She is very dependable and has a wonderful rapport with our two kitties (and us). Whenever we go out of town we know our little ones are in safe and competent hands. Jenn goes out of her way to send updates with photos each day. She is always prompt in responding and professional. Our kitties are normally very shy, but they both took to Jen immediately. She truly is a cat whisperer. We also sincerely appreciate her advice - ranging from kitty allergies to appropriate nutrition. Jenn is a wealth of knowledge. You would be lucky to have her. We cannot say enough glowing things about her. We give her 6 out of 5 stars!!

When I found Christine on Thumbtack, I was at the end of my rope. My boyfriend and I had adopted a 1 year old American bulldog mix from a rescue in NY and were having trouble getting him to listen to us or bond with us, were experiencing a lot of behavioral issues and even some aggression and were considering bringing him back because we felt we were in over our heads. We had reached out to the rescue we adopted him from for help finding a trainer and they kept blowing us off. The rescue claimed to have spent donor money on his training, but all he had really learned was how to get treats and would not even do basic commands like sit or stay if food wasn't in the picture. Finally, in desperation, I googled dog trainers in my area and thumbtack popped up. I filled out a form and within minutes I received a reply from Christine DiCarlo at Canine Communications. I emailed her and she said I could call her any time so I did so immediately. Over the phone she could sense how desperate I felt and she drove an hour to come meet with us. She immediately assessed the situation and explained to me what was going on and how to fix it. We have been working with her for about 6 weeks and both humans and dogs are doing much better and have settled into our new lives. We even adopted another rescue puppy and Christine told me exactly how to introduce the pup to the dog and the home, thus saving us future problems. There have been a couple of desperate phone calls to Christine and every time I'm freaking out, she talks me off the ledge and everything settles back down. Without Christine, I don't think we would have gotten through the rough patches. She has trained me in what to do to have well behaved and secure dogs and in how to read my dogs because before her, I have to admit, I was clueless and an emotional wreck. We are all so lucky to have found her and her services. She really cares about us and our dogs, she knows what she's doing and she has saved my family and my sanity!

I reached out to Josh for help because my dog would lash out at other dogs when we went for walks, hikes, etc. I was very pleased with his work! He arrived on time, earlier than expected, to really make sure I got the most out of my session. The quality of his work is very professional and you could tell he truly cares about helping you and your dog! He is very knowledgeable in numerous different behavioral issues, which was impressive. He taught me how to take control of my dog and now my dog is doing much better socially. Josh also responded to my emails in a timely mannner when I would have quick questions. I would highly recommend this service!!

We are so happy to have met Debbie! She is an absolute pleasure. She helped me and my fiancee learn how to be the best owners to our new puppy Bodie. She truly cares for each animal she works with and wants the best for both owner and dog. Being a pretty anxious person, Debbie was so patient and helpful. She never left without us fully understanding what is expected and always made sure we could do it on our own. She is a fabulous trainer and person. She even gave us great tips for healthy homemade treats for our dog. I would recommend her 1000 times over to anyone who is looking for help with their dog, new or old.

Katie takes great care of her client (the pet) more than anything. She took care of our cat for the past three weeks despite the extreme snow condition in Ann Arbor. I wholeheartedly recommend Katie to anyone who are looking for a caring, responsible, and knowledgeable pet sitter.

Rachel has been amazing; I feel so lucky to have found her for my little poodle Prosciutto. Rachel is not only extremely professional, but you can tell how passionate she is about her work. She is clearly invested in your puppy's success in becoming the best dog for your family. She is organized, quick to respond whenever I have a question, and can handle any problem thrown at her. Over the course of only two weeks, my puppy showed more progress than I ever expected her to, and that progress has only continued since! I truly cannot recommend her enough!

It is my pleasure to share the knowledge that I have referring to Latoya Lawrence and her love for dogs. I have seen Latoya interact with many different animals but her passion for their welfare is rare and special. I owned a Dog that I no longer had the time to care for alone due to my new job. I told Latoya about my newfound dilemma and she stepped in immediately to help. Once I saw how well my dog adapted to her I was extremely comfortable and confident with her help. Latoya helped me until I could manage my new schedule and I cannot thank her enough, even after I had everything under control she still visited and helped as much as she could. I highly recommend Latoya’s services for Dog walking and special care due to all of her wonderful capabilities.

Working with Ellese is wonderful! She always responds in a timely manner. My dog Essa comes back to me looking fantastic. She really knows how to connect with the dogs so that they feel comfortable being groomed. I use Ellese all the time now, it feels more personal then going to petsmart.

Maria was on time, pleasant and polite. My dog is 13 yrs.old. She is blind and almost completely deaf. Maria treated my dog gently and was sensitive to her issues. I asked her to use the shampoo my Vet. recommended and Maria complied. I will use her services again in the future.

After having my aggressive dog, Bella evaluated by nearly 6 different trainers (actually, the trainers were evaluated by ME) about 11 months later I found exactly what I was looking for in World Canine! Chris Murley is a compassionate and incredibly knowledgeable dog trainer. He not only guides us in learning a bit of dog psychology, but also how we affect our dog with our own actions, both positive and negative. I am excited to move forward and watch as Bella finally transforms into a part of the family under the hand of World Canine. I will definitely refer all my family and friends to Chris if ever the need arises. Thank you, Chris!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is included in a dog grooming?

Dog grooming is so much more than giving your dog a bath. Dog grooming is a broad term that covers all aspects of canine cleanliness and hygiene. The services included in dog grooming will vary based on your needs and what you choose to pay. Unless they are rolling in cowpies or playing in mud puddles, most dogs are okay getting a shampoo bath only as needed. You’ll know when they need it if they smell bad or are bringing dirt into the house. Some dogs, like shepherds and shih tzus, have thick coats that can get matted and tangled without regular care. Pro dog groomers can deftly blow dry a dog’s hair after a bath so that it is shiny and smooth. Dog grooming can include brushing that detangles dog hair and also thins the undercoat to minimize shedding.

Dog grooming also includes hygiene services such as toothbrushing and ear cleaning. Clean teeth are important to the health of your dog, and the pros have the patience and proper technique to get it done. Regular dog grooming can stave off tear stains, those reddish stains below your dog’s eyes. Anal gland expression is something not many people want to do on their own, even if they love their dog. A dog groomer can safely and efficiently release any blocked anal gland fluid. Other dog grooming services include nail trimming and clipping. Nationally, dog grooming prices range from $60 to $80. Most dog groomers offer discounts to customers who purchase monthly packages or bundle multiple grooming services at one time.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

  • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
  • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
  • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
  • What are your different walk routes?
  • When will you pick up and drop off?
  • How will we communicate?
  • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
  • What’s your cancellation policy?
  • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
  • How and how often do I pay you?
  • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

What is a dog groomer?

A dog groomer is a service professional who provides dog grooming and basic hygiene care for your dog. Dog groomers are typically animal lovers who are competent and comfortable working with a wide range of dog breeds and temperaments. Dog groomers are knowledgeable about the care needs for different kinds of dog coats. A poodle will have different haircut needs than a shih tzu, for example, so it pays to have a trained pro provide the proper cut. Good dog groomers know how to safely clean your dog’s teeth, bathe your dog, and cut their nails without going too short. They understand how to trim the hair from around your dog’s face, express anal glands, and clean your dog’s ears. Many people who choose dog grooming as a profession also pursue other dog services such as attending veterinary school, running a doggy day care center, working as a professional dog walker, and more.

What is a dog groomer?

Keep your family dogs happy, healthy and clean with regular dog grooming. A dog groomer is a business owner or employee of a dog grooming business who specializes in dog hygiene and grooming. To find a reputable dog groomer, research reviews, ask for references and confirm that the groomer has good standing in the dog grooming community.

A dog groomer should be comfortable and competent working with dogs of all breeds and temperaments. Typically a groomer will have trained with other groomers and taken educational courses to keep abreast of the latest safety information and techniques. There are brick-and-mortar dog grooming businesses, as well as mobile dog groomers who bring all their equipment and provide their services at your home or location. In some cases, brick-and-mortar businesses will also pick up and return your dog for an additional fee.

What vaccines do dogs need to be groomed?

It’s important to make sure your dog is up to date on its vaccines before taking it to a groomer. Vaccinations keep your dog and the other dogs that use the establishment healthy. Viruses can linger long after a dog is gone, so an unvaccinated dog can infect a number of other dogs days or even months after their visit. Find out about your dog groomer’s vaccination policies, and think carefully about receiving services from a company that does not require vaccinations. Here are the main vaccinations that are generally required for dog grooming:

  • Parvovirus: Parvo is a nasty virus that can kill dogs within 48-72 hours of infection. The virus is incredibly persistent and, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, is resistant to heat, cold, humidity and drying. It’s spread by dog-to-dog contact or contact with contaminated feces, environments (food and water bowls, collars and leashes, etc.,) or people.
  • Adenovirus 2: Dogs receive this vaccination to protect against canine infectious hepatitis. The vaccination can also helps prevent canine cough.
  • Canine distemper virus: Distemper has no known cure and can cause serious pain, illness, and even death, although recovery is possible with medical intervention.
  • Rabies: This disease attacks the central nervous system and — when untreated — will
  • lead to death. The CDC recommends euthanizing an unvaccinated animal that has been exposed to rabies, although six-month isolation followed by vaccination is also permissible.
  • Para-influenza: Canine para-influenza leads to kennel cough and an unhappy dog.
