I didn't have an opportunity to use Jason's services, as the situation was resolved. However, we communicated on several occasions. He was attentive, responsive and more than fair with his pricing. I have included him in my arsenal of contractors and whenever the need arises, I plan to call Berry's Home Improvement.

I hired Skilled Service, Repair & Installation a few weeks ago, right before the New Year, and it was a very pleasant experience, from the introductory email, to the phone/text conversations, to the finalization of the job. One thing I really like about Joseph is, that he is really does seem like an honest business man. He must've mentioned to me two or three times not to ever feel shy about asking any questions at all and voicing my own opinion. As a homeowner, and not a professional in the construction business, it is very intimidating at times hiring contractors and letting them and their sub-contractors in the home while having to perform family-hood duties. I mean the household chores, the kids and their homework and their chores, etc, etc. I run a very busy household, Joseph's head had to be spinning, trying to stay focused on the work, hearing the noise and comotion. Who knows what he must've thought of my homelife, LOL, but like I said above, him and his helper were very pleasant and professional. They both have children themselves, and they both said it was nothing new to them. Even when Joseph came by for the estimate, my son and daughter would not leave my side, not even five minutes into estimate he had my kids giggling and smiling, I thought that was very sweet of him. So between the paint job and the electrical installation for the master bedroom and kids' room, the rooms came out absolutely wonderful. The accent walls in each room bounce the rest of the room right out at you. The lighting was beautifly done and there are more outlets and they are so easy to get to now, yay!!

Walter came in as a last minute save the day contractor. He is a general contractor licensed and insured and came to fix mistakes of another contractor and fix my faucets install. He ended up doing an amazing job and added a sealer to my carrera marble vanity. I am using him again for my next project. He does what he says he will, sticks to price and exceeds expectations. NICE GUY overall. Don't look further!

PROJECT: Remove and install an exterior door. Darin came to my home a few months ago to evaluate a project I listed on Thumbtack. He provided a quote in writing within hours of meeting us. He was one of a few contractors that presented a written contract that detailed the work he proposed. He arrived at each of our three meetings on time. He completed the job tasked efficiently and left the work space clean and clear. His work was excellent!!! My husband and I would hire HBR again...in a heartbeat!

My experience with contractors, including this company, is that you have to have patience. When a job has multiple areas of concentration (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc.), there may be different people doing each service; which means that everything is dependent upon each person doing their service in a timely manner, otherwise possible delays. Also, most contractors have multiple job sites where their people are rotated where needed. Since no one can predict a problem will occur, this also causes delays in getting a project completed. All of this is the nature of the job. As I mentioned before, try to have patience. Renovation projects can be frustrating and sometimes upsetting; but if everything is done correctly with minimal errors, the most important thing is that you are happy with the skills provided and the quality of the work completed.

We used Smith Plumbing twice already. Once they did a full bathroom renovation. What made them different from the other contractors we hired before, is that they payed full attention to all details, giving us options of how else we could do other then our original plan. Second time we had a licking problem in the kitchen. They were prompt, quick and fixed the issue within an hour. I would highly recommend. Thank you!

Fabian did a great job. He responded very quickly to my questions and was readily available to answer questions. I needed to replace old outlets as well as install new outlets, dimmers and switches for the kitchen and bathroom before rhe Some of the boxes were old and needed to be moved or replaced for the install of new cabinets. He seamlessly made the changes and advised on how the outlets would appear once the backsplash was in. He had cost effective fixes to problems with the old boxes which i had chosen not to replace completely. He was also able to fix some recessed lights that had been sloppily installed by a previous contractor. He was knowledgeable and understood his trade as well as being honest about what i needed to do to have my outlets upgraded. I will be asking him back to complete the electric install of the appliances once the cabinets are in as well.

I contacted Spirit Contracting to redo a renovation of my bathroom, after another contractor, who I contracted via Thumbtack, did a horrendous job. Frankie was early to the appointment, patient, went thru the entire job that was completed and advised what needed to be redone. They did an amazing job getting my bathroom completed! I cannot believe the difference!! Spirit Contracting is the way to go!! They were professional, punctual, clean and great to work with. Frankie is honest and pays attention to the littlest details and stands behind his work 1000%. I would most definitely recommend this company and plan on using their services in the future!

I've had work done on my roof several times in 6 years to locate and repair a leak. The last big rain proved that my last repair was a total waste of money. After going through the steps with Home Adviser, I contacted Quito's Contractors after reading their reviews. They came on a Saturday to inspect the roof and ceiling damages. I received an estimate soon after with what would be done which included installing "ice and water shields" which I never heard of in prior roof work. I agreed, and whiten three weeks, the job was completed. My Contractor's name was Felix. Very nice guy. They showed up at the time that was given and worked till the sun went down. On the second day, they arrived even earlier. The area of the roof that needed repairs, was stripped down to the wood. In some areas, the plywood was replaced. When the job was completed, the area was totally cleaned. I am satisfied with the work that was done. I would contact them should I need any future roof repair. I would also recommend their services. But, the question is, was that the problem. I will review that after the next big rain fall.

It's been a pleasure to work with Home Geeks. Our renovation hasn't been finished (will update when the job is done) but so far, Vincent and Richard have been professional, responsive and patient. As an architect, I have worked with a lot of contractors, and so far they have been great. They have the experience and knowledge to give us good recommendations and they care about the client saving money by reducing the scope of unnecessary work. Their fee is reasonable also. Thank you, guys!

It is my pleasure to recommend the excellent work of Rick Doggett who was the general contractor for a remodeling project of my apartment in Jersey City. From the initial interaction and proposal phase through construction and the timely completion of the job, Rick and his crew performed at the highest level of professionalism, work ethics, and dedication. The work involved a complete re-structure of the internal floor plan, moving walls, installing new fixtures, hardwood floor and carpet, electrical, plumbing, and painting, while communicating with an owner who was not on location. I would, with no hesitation, engage Rick in any future construction or remodeling that will come-up. Thank you Rick and crew for a wonderful job.

Working with Jenine Beck Design was simply a dream. She is a highly talented designer with amazing ideas. However, she listens keenly to what the client wants--and incorporates their ideas into the plan. Jenine re-designed our entire bedroom. She put together a plan which completely transformed what we had, into an idyllic, contemporary oasis. She brought in tried, trusted and tested contractors--who were a pleasure to work with--and together, they executed her/our vision. The result completely blew us away--way beyond our expectations. Jenine worked within our budget--but did not in any way sacrifice style--she has fantastic networks with suppliers, so we were able to get luxury items at great prices. She was there with the contractors (builders, painters etc) every step of the way--and we did not have to worry at all about any of the work being done. She was the go-to person for everything--and she managed all the sub-contracts. At a personal level, Jenine is special. A kind and caring designer--and a perfectionist. She is very sensitive to client preferences and she makes working with her very easy. Rarely do I make unequivocal recommendations, but in Jenine's case, I am. You will be hard-pressed to find a better or more talented designer than her in the area. If you have a design job, small or large, I HIGHLY recommend that you reach out to her. You will not regret it. She changed our room--and with that, changed our lives.

We highly recommend S&A Contracting for house renovations. From our first phone call Stephon arranged a time to visit us for an estimate. We were updating our bathroom fixtures and needed wallpaper removed from a bedroom with plaster walls and then painted. His estimate was the exact price we paid. Stephon treats your home as if it is his home. His work area was cleaned up each evening and Stephon’s work was professional in every way. Our home is over 100 years old, Stephon was able to smooth the plaster walls and adjust the new bathroom vanity to a level position. Stephon has all the characteristics we look for in a contractor; professionalism, quality of workmanship and great communication skills! We will continue to welcome S&A Contracting to continue updating our home! Anne & Perry Polhemus 06/27/16 Midland Park, NJ

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
