Joe responded within minutes to my request. He came the same day and completed the 220 dryer installation plug in about 30 mins. He also was kind enough to replace my smoke detector battery and noticed my washer was leaking water and fixed it. I would definitely recommend.

I wasn't sure if I needed a plumber or appliance repair, as my dishwasher is leaking. Chris arrived on time and was completely honest with me. He told me exactly what the problem is, and guided me to a reputable appliance repair service. He was very knowledgeable and I will call him in the future for my plumbing needs.

Jeff recently completed a bathroom renovation in my lake cottage. The house was built in 1910 and it required Jeff to completely tear out the existing bathroom and do a complete remodel. Jeff did all of the work including the tear out, plumbing, electric, tiling, painting, etc. Jeff focuses on quality and detail which is extremely important especially when doing tile work. He also replaced doors in my home and was able to find solutions to unique door sizes and uneven floors. I would be happy to speak with anyone who is considering hiring Jeff for a project!

We needed a hot water heater installed as a replacement for a failing one and a toilet unclogged. Shawn was available shortly after my request and exceeded my expectations. We encountered some complications with the water header and Shawn dealt with them on the spot and was transparent about the extra costs. He was courteous to my family and totally professional. The quality of the work looks great. I will definitely be looking to him for future projects.

We had a foot of solid ice on 3 sides of our roof above the gutters. I knew with the thaw that we were sure to have water damage. Found Ed through "Thumbtack". He called back right away and fixed us on a Sunday no less!! His employees worked their tails off up on our roof for 3 hours!

Although there was a mix-up on the size of the water heater tank to be replaced (necessitating a return trip to the plumbing supply store) Dave hung in there all day to get the job done on a holiday weekend. He knew what he was doing once he obtained the correct tank and was very pleasant despite frustrating circumstances.

We received a quick response to our request for assistance to replace our faulty hot water heater on a Sunday. His price was very reasonable considering it was a weekend. No hidden fees or costs, he came prepared for the job and was on time. We are very pleased and will hopefully never need him again but if we do, we won't hesitate to call. A++, thank you Gary.

It was a pleasure working with Rick. He was Fast, on time and very professional! I would gladly refer him to anyone looking for reasonably priced professional service. We needed a water heater replaced. Out of the three quotes we had, Rick was the most reasonable, and he was straight forward about what we needed. He was very quick to respond with answers to questions, and he was available within the week to replace our water heater! I would say this was by far, one of the better experiences I have had with repair/ contractor services in a long time. Thanks again.

George installed drains and water piping for our basement kitchen and laundry areas. He had to re-route all of the electrical and plumbing to a tankless hot water which he also installed. He completed the project according to the building code for the town. He did everything in a timely manner and within our budget. He was very good about telling us why he was doing things the way he was doing them and advising us so we don’t have any problems in the future. He also built a bathroom, installed a shower, and new toilet in the basement. I think he could do almost any kind of remodeling project and I think he would do a great job. I highly recommend him!

I called Steve Caudle, owner of Cedar Mills Home Renovations, originally to fix some siding on my garage that was damaged. He came out promptly, gave me a reasonable estimate that we agreed on and, subject to weather conditions, scheduled a time window when he would do the repair. Subsequently, the winter worsened, we got 3 feet of snow, which caused a delay in the siding repair. As the winter began to thaw I experienced major ice damming on the roof over my living room which caused an inside leak and water damage to my drywall. Since this was an emergency situation Steve took on this unscheduled job right away. He literally had to rebuild my entire inside living room wall down to the studs. While this repair was happening I also hired them for some other projects, such as replacing floor tiles, replacing and re-piping a basement sump pump, redoing skylight seals and flashing, and a few other projects. All the work was done at reasonable cost. Once the weather improved Cedar Mills fixed the siding over my garage, which was the original scope of work. To make a long story short, Steve and the Cedar Mills team did an absolutely spectacular job. Completely courteous and professional at all times, and the quality of their workmanship was hands down some of the best I have ever seen from a home remodeling and repair contractor in the Rochester area. Cedar Mills gets the highest possible rating from me. I will definitely hire Steve and his team in the future! If you are looking for a professional, smart, honest, skilled and motivated team for home remodeling in the Rochester, NY area, that is also great value for the cost, Cedar Mills is a great choice. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

    • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
    • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
    • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.
