Our experience with Handyman Pro was extremely disappointing and I hate to report that. I gave the benefit of the doubt for about a week but in the end, he did not follow through. I'm hoping that his 5-star reviews are indeed honest and that it's just a matter of him not being qualified for drain/plumbing issues that caused our problems.
We called him in for a clogged drain and leaking garbage disposal. When he first came out on Wed 1/17, he plunged our kitchen drain for upwards of half an hour, and I later learned from someone who has training in plumbing that if a plunger is going to work, it will work within about five minutes. So he was continuing to plunge when it wasn't effective. He also used a plastic container that he grabbed from our dish rack to plug the other side of the sink (for better plunging, I guess) without asking, and we had a drain plug right there on the sink he could have used.
Eventually he diagnosed the problem as two pipes not being properly glued together, so one was falling down into the other and causing the blockage - no clog, but a lack of flow. He said it was "Good to go" and we were good to use the sink, but he would need to get a part for the garbage disposal. He estimated that he could get the part for less than $10 and asked me to send him $10 on Cash App.
His Cash App name is "Run Me My Money" which I could forgive if the service was otherwise stellar, but he ended up stiffing us on a refund so it rings really unprofessional and scammy now.
He went to Maytag to get the replacement part and called me from the store asking for the specific name of the disposal. I believe this is something he should have noted down before he left the job site and went to purchase a part. On the phone he referred to Maytag putting in an order and texted me "She said it will be two days, I'll come same day to install."
He also texted "Let me know if anything changes, I guarantee my work or I come back out for free."
That evening, I texted him that the sink was backing up again and he said he would be back in the morning to handle it.
Thursday morning I asked when we could expect him and he said he would be to us around 2-3pm. The drain ended up unblocking and we regained normal use of the sink again. He said he could still come by and glue the pipes (which I assumed he had done in the first place) and to try a piece he had to see if it would fit our disposal.
Then he sent a screenshot of an Amazon listing for a garbage disposal flange for $36.99 and asked for an additional $26 to Cash App to cover the rest of the part cost after the initial $10 estimate, which I sent (like a fool). He said that he ordered it on Amazon because it was cheaper than from Maytag - but he had clearly stated that someone at Maytag ordered the part, so now there were two conflicting stories and I was beginning to feel unsettled. He never arrived on Thursday and said he would be out first thing in the morning Friday.
Friday at 3pm I texted to ask when we could expect him after he didn't show up in the morning. He replied at 6:30pm that he had a flat tire all day and was only just getting it fixed. That is absolutely something you should tell a client expecting you first thing ASAP when you find the problem. If true, this was really unprofessional. But I doubt the truth of it anyway since he had already been lying to me.
Saturday 1/20 10:21am I texted "Let me know when we can expect you." No response. I texted again at 4pm "Are we seeing you today?" and he wrote back "I text you and told you the part got delayed til Monday because of the storm." We were texting with iMessage, which clearly would have given him a delivery confirmation, and I never got this text, so he was continuing to lie to me.
At this point I told him I was not comfortable continuing the job and that I would like a refund for the $36 part. He wrote back "Oh come on... don't back out on me..." etc. but I asked for the refund and to close the project.
As of 2/7 he has never refunded the money, and we ended up going to Lowe's to get the garbage disposal part and my roommate fixed it and glued the pipes.
Wasted hours waiting for him when he never showed up, poor communication, left water all over our floor, didn't get the part name for what he needed, said he would refund and didn't so he effectively stole $36 from me, and lied at least three times.
0/10 experience. Do not recommend.
