Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Does an electrician need to enter my home?

Whether an electrician needs to enter your home depends on the type of work that needs to be completed. Any work on receptacles, lights and more located on the inside or outside of your house will likely require an electrician to enter your home.

Ask electricians in your area to perform a video consultation instead of a traditional walk-through to assess the project. During the consultation, they should be able to tell you if they’ll need to enter your home or not.

The job was to fix my electrical problem. Doug was very nice person. However, he spent several hours on 2 different days trying to fix my issue problem but it never happened. He said that he thought it be a bad wire in the wall and he didn't have the equipment to track down the problem. He said that he would call me back with the name of another electrician that might be able to fix it. That also didn't happen. He was paid about $125. I had to call another electrician. It took him about 45 min to an hour to fix the problem. I told that electrician what happened. He said on this type of troubleshooting job, if an electrician doesn't fix the problem, they shouldn't be paid.

Doug did a great job at a reasonable price. He was much more responsive the other pros I was trying to get quotes from. Extremely stratified with the project and Doug's work. I now have a electrician for any further needs! I highly recommend!

Clifton’s work quality and attention to detail is exceptional. He was very responsive to my inquiry and we were able to schedule our project quickly. He installed a new light, ran a neutral wire to a switch that lacked one and installed an entirely new line and added a new GFI outlet to my bathroom. One of the best experiences I have had hiring an electrician! Highly recommend.

I’m nervous leaving a good review because I really want my electrician to be available next time I need him! But he earned a great review. He responded quickly, he was on time, and he did great work. I appreciated how he was able to get to the bottom of the problem and fix it successfully and even quickly! I had some funky wiring that kept my doorbell and outlets from working properly. No damage or mess left behind.

Work quality, professionalism, responsiveness, value and punctuality- these are not enough adjectives to describe Darnell! Imagine calling someone at 3:30 on a Friday afternoon and asking them to do a very small job. Darnell's response? I'd be happy to! We were expecting a hefty bill for this since it was such short notice. Instead not only were we charged a less than expected fee, Darnell took the time to inspect the rest of the electrical in our basement without charging us or creating more jobs for himself. This ethical electrician comes highly recommended. Thank you so very much Darnell! We are more than satisfied with the work you did! You are, indeed, Gem City's Gem!

We originally had Quintin out to correct the previous owner's shoddy attempt at adding an outlet and install a new light in our storage room. The work was done quickly and Quintin left the job site cleaner than when he started. A couple of days later, we were having emergency electrical issues and Quintin came over within the hour of our frantic call, ensured that the breaker panel was safe and again, corrected an error that the electrician that came out at the beginning of the year did. He is now coming over to fix another stupid amateur job. He has made it into our cell phone contact list. Quintin is now our go-to guy. The only thing that would make him better is if he did all home improvements!! You can not go wrong with him. Top rate guy.
