We hired SmitRoc Home Improvement to sand our deck and stain it. As Steve worked on the deck we discovered that there was 3 layers of stain to remove that proved extremely challenging to sand off. Steve and team did a great job sanding the deck even though it took them a lot longer than anticipated. They also were able to identify a few issues with stability on the deck that they fixed as well. We really appreciated their persistence. Steve also gave us a great price for all of the work he did on the deck. We would highly recommend SmitRoc Home Improvement and we plan to use them again in the future.

Brian gave me the lowest bid & was the only contractor who could do the job right away. I was sure it would take a couple of days but he & his "worker" got the wallpaper stripped, the walls primed & then finished with 2 coats of paint. They started at 9:00 & were done by 5:30. They did a terrific job & I love my new room. Brian is polite, friendly & easy to work with. Highly recommend!

We have used McCauley Painting for both interior and exterior painting and for power washing as well as wall paper removal and could not be more satisfied with the outcome. The quality of the work was great and Adam was there when he said he would be there. He finished on time and his own sense of pride in his work really showed. We trust him explicitly and he has been able to complete the work when we are not there. In addition, he cleans up and his perfectionism shows up in his work and his attention to detail. We recommend McCauley painting with no reservation.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best way to remove wallpaper?

There are several proven methods for wallpaper removal; each has its pros and cons, but some are definitely easier. Peeling is usually the least painful, followed by soaking and stripping. Dry-stripping is the next most time-consuming, and steaming the most work. The average wallpaper removal job costs between $360 and $560. The method of removal can affect the cost, as steaming takes longer than peeling and will therefore typically cost more. Peeling wallpaper off is usually the quickest method. To see if your wallpaper can be peeled off, try gently edging up a corner and carefully peeling the paper off the wall in strips. If you can’t peel, then you’ll have to score and strip it, either by dry-stripping or by soaking and then stripping. Plaster walls can withstand moisture and can stand up to soaking and stripping, but drywall should not be soaked. For very stubborn wallpaper, steaming may be necessary, which is time-consuming but effective. If you prefer not to attempt these methods yourself, wallpaper removal pros have the proper tools and experience to quickly take down wallpaper and also repair any damage to your walls.

How much does it cost to remove wallpaper in a room?

The national wallpaper removal cost averages $360-$560, which will typically include multiple rooms. Pros often charge by the square foot to remove egregious wallpaper that is long past its prime. Wallpaper removal cost may range anywhere from 60 cents to $1.50 or more per square foot. A pro may estimate removal costs ranging between $160 and $300 for a medium-sized room. Costs can vary due to ceiling height, and some pros add a skim coat to make repainting or re-papering smoother.
