Was very prompt to answer bid quote and always responded to text message quickly. We had a 100ft tree located in our backyard and Jeremiah came out THAT day to quote and the next to cut it down. Very happy with service and would recommend.

We just built a new house in Mt Lookout and wanted to add some much needed landscaping around our pool and backyard. These guys did a great job. They were incredibly affordable and had terrific work ethic. I couldn't recommend them more highly and I will be using them again next Spring.

I contracted with Mark Koeninger and his company in the fall of 2015 to build a covered outdoor living area and the rear of my existing home. The project was completed in the spring of 2016 after I asked them to pause the construction during the holidays and cold temperatures. Mark and his company KPS Architecture and Landscape worked with me with the beginning drawings and plans and provided some very good advice that would make my outdoor living area very unique and have a professional finish. With any large project there were decisions and changes made by me the homeowner but working with KPS on these changes was a good experience. The crew working daily on my project were very professional and were very respectful of my property and maintaining a clean appearance throughout the completion of the project. They were very open to suggestions and were very thorough when explaining the timing and tasks still needing completion to keep the project on track. I will end by saying my outdoor living area and I only met but exceeded my expectations that I envisioned when breaking ground. My neighbors and family have also praise the design and craftsmanship. I have and would again recommend KPS Architecture & Landscape to friends and family. Thank You!!

We had a pool we needed filled in and had called several companies for a price. We were receiving quotes in the $8,000 range because it was a large pool and there was no truck access to the back yard. So, that meant lots of fill to be delivered and lots of time to truck the fill to the back yard. Jared was the only one who mentioned that there was enough fill that could be used from the hill in the backyard to fill the pool. That saved us 1/2 the cost of bringing the fill in. We were so glad we had him come out. He saved us lot's of money, did an excellent job and was always on time and did what he said he was going to do. Kind of rare these days. I would absolutely hire him again!

I hired Smith Landscaping and Contracting to cut down a large spruce tree and take out an overgrown brush pile in the backyard, and trim a pine tree off the house in the front yard. I am very happy with the job Tom and his team did. They were friendly, professional, and efficient. I'm looking forward to hiring Smith Landscaping again, we already have more quotes on other projects in the works! Highly recommend!

Dan installed kitchen backsplash for using glass tiles in a subway design. The project took about one and a half days. On the second day, it snowed! However, Dan arrived to our home to complete the grouting as promised. I was impressed by Dan's dedication, professional behavior and craftsmanship. We are very happy with our new backsplash and would recommend Dan to our friends!

Travis laid stone in a front area of our home. He picked the stone, was there when he said he would be, completed on time, worked neatly, and the finished project is fantastic. We have a backyard that is on the list next year and Travis is using his design talent to come up with our oasis plans. excited to see his plans! Thanks thumbtack!

Big Ox Pro Lawns has delivered a beautiful landscape for our home. They took care of everything in one day. After a few days, some plants were looking weak, and I send a picture and a message and a few days later everything was replaced to match the quality of what they had delivered since day one. A great company with personable service and care. We hope to work with them next year to add some more tress to the backyard and upkeep the rest of the landscaping. :)

About

I feel I have a more artistic sense than many landscape designers. I also have many years of experience and know how best to economically improve any landscape. I also oversee all my jobs. There is no disconnect from designer to installer.

We built a new custom home in Ft Wright, Kentucky. After getting the interior close to finished and having our driveway poured we needed to dress up the outside. Scratch the Surface Excavating, owner Tom Audas was referred by one of our sub contractors. Tom designed and built our exterior landscaping/hardscaping and far exceeded our expectations. We built a full walkout on a hillside. Scratch the Surface excavated and installed a beautiful rock path from the back corner of the house to the front opposite corner of the house (130 feet) The rocks are enormous and fit together beautifully. He installed 20+ steps out of rock like they were cast for the application. Except they are real rocks! The back of our house was the one area that we didn’t have a clue how to handle. Scratch the Surface Excavating also did all of our grading, seeding, and sod applications. Tom also rerouted our sch 35 footer drains and ran the daylight pipes in the back of our house to make the area workable. Scratch the Surface Excavating is a class act!

Justin was a great contractor to work with. We tried getting work done before, but he was the quickest, and had the best value. He was very respectful when it came to not damaging my other landscape, and went about and beyond to make our yard exactly how we wanted it. He finished it quickly and professionally! I love spending nights relaxing in my backyard ecsape now!

    About

Our approach is distinguished by an approach that works with nature. This contrasts a design approach commonly used in which the primary goal is to express control and order. Often it is nothing but outdoor decorating. Common landscapes in this area are mulch based systems. Plants are isolated from each other in geometric patterns in beds against the house. We use a plant based system. Beds are planted with flowering perennials that spread to reduce mulching and weeding. The result is we can deliver reduced maintenance to our clients with an outdoor space that meets their living needs and contributes to an exciting ecologically responsible and thriving place to relax and enjoy life. We feel better in these kinds of places, and it is our hope we can provide this to our clients. Not to mention give them some extra time to enjoy it by making it easier to take care of! Another solution to weeds? We use plants in many areas that are taller than the weeds. We can reduce mowing, trimming, and blowing by replacing some square feet of lawn with small wooded areas, mini-meadows, or edible plantings both perennial or annual vegetable.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
