AJ not only did everything we agreed to, he fixed mistakes made by a previous contractor which took extra time. Instead of charging more, AJ explained what the problem was, how the work had been done incorrectly and just remedied the problem. Would hire again in an instant.

We would DEFINITELY use PFC again! Willis Preston was excellent at communicating....responsive and responsible. His guidance and professional advice was great throughout the whole process. He was patient and thorough with me with all my questions for months leading up to the project start date. Of all of the contractors of used throughout the remodeling of our home, he was the best of them. The scope was always clear, the workmanship was top notch...the people that worked on the project were great and trustworthy...and Willis was great at talking through any issues that came up (issues with the home, not issues with him or his work). I cannot stress how great it was to have them install hardwood flooring throughout my first floor. I manage tech/business related projects for a living. His skill and professionalism, fit and finish was top notch!

This contractor has been very upfront with all the work and has informed me the steps of the project and has taken my input with desires and wants. The cost and reasons for the expenses have been totally justified and appreciated. I've had experience with some "jack-legs" and totally appreciate the work this contractor has done and will definitely utilized the services of this company for further work on my home. I highly recommend this contractor.

Tom exceeded our expectations installing our landscape lighting. He was very responsive, friendly and offered expert advice on how to insure the job was not only completed timely but anticipated future issues based on his experience. I had several other vendors contact me for this job, but only Tom gave me the confidence he knew what he was doing and treated us very fairly. I really appreciated his by the hour billing rather than just trying to get as much as he could out of us. Welcome change from the numerous contractors we have dealt with in the past.

Brad and his staff delivered as promised and we couldn't be more satisfied with their work. Our basement was completely and professionally remodeled and Brad worked with us every step of the way including changes that we wanted to make during the process. They also made it a point to clean up each day and respected our home which is a nice touch if you have had other contractors that didn't do this in the past. I would highly recommend Brad and Alhi to anyone for any construction needs. Easy and professional to work with and there are no surprises.

Jay built a bench for our kitchen table with storage underneath the seats, and did some other related work such as hanging/moving a chandelier and moving the electrical outlet So we could use but keep hidden inside. The work was great - the bench is sturdy, looks great, the seats raise to open for a storage area (and have piano hinges so they don’t close on the kids hands). Jay thought of all the small details and completed in a timely manner. He was also very transparent about everything. The cost quoted was the final cost, and was a fair price. This was pretty much our third attempt to get this built - other handymen had committed but either couldn’t or wouldn’t. Jay not only did a great job, but was great to work with, and we will definitely use him again and recommend.

We enjoyed having John on our remodel. His level of professionalism and the quality of work was exactly what we were looking for in a contractor. He had the knowledge and experience to give us exactly what we wanted, staying within our budget and maintaining the timeline he gave for completion. Over all just a professional job!

We had a water leak in the kitchen that ended creating a project that included: removing an old range, cutting some cabinets to fit the new range, patching, painting and wall papering. After no luck with reliability with another contractor, we tried Thumbtack and found Jerry. What a blessing in disguise that the others were flakes- he has been terrific! If you read other reviews and think, "This guy is too good to be true," don't worry; he isn't! He is just a rare breed! Where to start....first, he was very fair and reasonable on the price. Apparently there is an industry standard pricing guide that set process high (hence the sticker shock with everyone else). If he feels that it is unreasonable, he works down from there. His rate was reasonable enough that we could add in changing the title on our backsplash. But this does NOT mean quality is sacrificed. He is more than experienced and it shows. He is extremely neat (never leaves a mess), and his work is careful. A true generalist, he has ended up helping us with other problems that ironically occurred while he was here. I asked him to remove the sink for me so that I could apply some stone finishing to our counters, and he saw that our wiring for our disposal and dishwasher was not up to code (and it wasn't!). He fixed that. Our basement had water in it after rain one night; he helped up trouble shoot where the leak was coming from (it was from a crazy odd place, but he helped our insurance adjuster to find the leak! Our adjuster liked him too, btw). He also fixed a support on our porch that was cracking. From drywall to roofs, he is a household renaissance man. He really went beyond the call of duty for us, and was never, ever "pushy". To top it off, he is very kind, friendly and honest. A couple of days he needed an extra set of hands and brought a couple of workers with him, who were also neat, skilled and polite. I could go on but you get the picture! ;-) My father was extremely handy this way and always did anything around the house with skill, care and integrity. I didn't know anyone else was cut from the same cloth until we met Jerry. If you are lucky enough to grab him, do so.

I just needed them to do a couple of jobs that were a bit beyond my capabilities, and these guys knocked it out of the park! I’m already planning some new projects based entirely on the fact that I feel like I’ve got a contractor guy, now. It’s nice to feel like you’ve got someone on your side that knows how to do it right.

Jeff was definitely the best choice we could have made to do our flooring. Not only did he do an outstanding job and do it in just one day but his flexibility was truly appreciated. We had to reschedule him three times because of weather issues and other subcontractors running behind because of that. He didn't bat an eye, just said to let him know when the best time would be for us and he would make it work and he did. He was pleasant, professional and courteous. We couldn't ask for more.

I own several different properties. With that being said, I've had numerous contractors do some work for me. Quality-Pro has been far and away the best service providers I've dealt with. Very personable, extremely punctual, the estimates were more accurate than most, and as far as the work, Quality-Pro did exactly what I asked of them. I even changed my mind on one project and they had no problem what so ever redoing the job and getting it done to my standards. I've used Quality-Pro on several occasions at my other properties and they are by far the best contracting company I've came across. Not to mention the customer service is off the charts! HIGHLY recommend Quality-Pro. I've even recommended them to close friends and family!

Devin did a wonderful job on our electrical work. We had some outside ceiling fans and plugs that were not working and we also had some issues with our breaker box. He came out and got all the work completed in about 4 hours! Very friendly & professional. We will be building an outbuilding in the next several months and will be calling him to do that electrical work for us! I highly recommend him! Thanks, Devin

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
