Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. To find out how much your new deck will cost, get free estimates from the best deck contractors near you.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Is it hard to build a deck yourself?

If you don’t have the skills, experience and qualifications, building a deck may be difficult for you to do on your own.

Structural integrity is key when constructing anything, but especially something you plan to have your family and friends use regularly. The safety of the structure takes careful planning and experience.

Professional contractors have the knowledge to make a safe, beautiful deck for you. They also know the proper permits and insurance required to legally build a new deck or remodel a porch in your city.

When in doubt, contact the best deck contractors near you and start getting free estimates today.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you (and so you can pay the best price).

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

How do you find a good carpenter?

To find a good carpenter near you, do the following:

  • Use Thumbtack to find a list of carpenters in your area.
  • Filter the list by selecting a specific carpentry service, such as general carpentry or cabinetry.
  • Identify carpenters who have high ratings.
  • View the carpenters’ profiles and learn more about their specialties.
  • Read their customer reviews and look at photos of their past work.

After you get a good sense of their quality of work, make sure the carpenter has the necessary credentials in your state. Then, request several cost estimates for your project(s).

What does a finish carpenter charge per hour?

On average, finish carpenters charge $60 per hour. However, this hourly rate will vary depending on where you live, the scope of the project and other factors. For a more accurate estimate, ask for price quotes from at least three finish carpenters in your area.

The deck itself looks good. But There is another review from last year where they sprayed onto things that arent the deck(the ground, an old wall, and on some concrete around the deck) and that is still an issue. They didnt lay down enough plastic or use paint brushes in tight spots and just air sprayed. They didnt come to clean it up.

Matthew was awesome to work with. Did an amazing job on our deck. He was helpful every step of the way, even when picking the color. Great communication. He fixed the posts, stairs, and some of the boards along with painting the deck. He helped fix a door in the house as well. I would recommend him for any deck or handy man job.

Damon did a great job with our deck. I wanted a two-toned color scheme for our deck. He suggested to go with solid colors and I'm glad I took his advice. Our deck now looks exactly like in the pictures I saw when I was choosing the colors. I would highly recommend.

I hired Dan to do a deck teardown and replacement. After paying him 3/4 of the money because of his problems with his birth of a child, and needing money because of the bills of the child birth and complications. I had just lost a daughter from a heart attack. I had true heart felt feelings for his journey to help his child that was fighting for their live. So I told him that he could use the money and start the process of building the deck three weeks later. That was in April 2022. With promising me that everything would be taken care of as soon as he got his child's health better. From April till the deck was completed in Dec of 2022. All I got was delays, promises of finally finishing and completing the deck. The deck was finished without steps for 3 months and then after weeks of him delaying to complete the steps,he finally came out after I promise to pay him another 475.00 to complete the steps and another 200.00 for clearing the yard of trash that wasn't completed. Well the steps are falling apart because of the use of spare wood parts that was piece together. The deck looks like a crackhead built it. I'm waiting for Dan to respond to my request to make everything right. And I will be posting pictures of my situation. But I wanted to get his thoughts on the pictures I'm sending him. Today. I can't recommend him to even carry water for some one. Will be posting pictures of my deck and the work.

We are thrilled with our new composite deck stairs that replaced our broken stairs. We were able to have the repairs done quickly (within a week of contact) and had beautiful results within 4 hours from start to finish. We will definitely be using again for replacing our deck railing! Thank you so much!

We contacted Elder for deck railing repair and staining. Elder was very responsive, came to give an estimate for work just days after we connected, and then was able to start work about a week later. He removed all of the old railing and installed new, replaced the stairs, and stained the entire deck all within a long weekend (TH-Sun). We were actually out of town while he was doing the work and he would even send photos of the progress! He and his team did great work and we are excited to have a “brand new” deck to enjoy!

Matt was professional, did great work on our deck, and showed up when he said. There was a part of the job in the original quote that he realized wasn't necessary once he got to work, and he reduced the quote. He very easily could have completed the job, did only what was necessary, but bill us for the original amount. We're planning to have Matt come back later this year to stain our deck. We would definitely recommend him!

First, I want to say that I never post negative reviews. Ever. I just keep to myself. But this review is intended to save others from my experience with Bigcat Building Services. I posted 2 jobs. A deck refinish and interior painting. Nick came by to review the deck work and provided an estimate. I liked him and his pricing and offered the painting job as well as the deck. All I asked for was good work, clarity of communication and that commitments be kept. I’m a customer for life of pros that can get the basics right. Nick agreed we would work on the deck first and on rainy days paint inside. Upon starting, he communicated that the deck required a little bit more work than he originally estimated and I agreed to pay him his requested additional amount to complete the work. We got started. He completed a few days work and He committed to dates and then changed them without telling me. He was scheduled to show up and my wife was waiting for him and he No showed. Later said he moved up another client job and after some back and forth, eventually recognized that he should have communicated better. All good I told him. I’m not unreasonable. We got back on track I thought. I’ve already demonstrated a willingness to pay more so he was properly compensated. He came by today to keep working and declared that this was more work than he planned, said he couldn’t “eat it”, which I never asked him to do, and said he was done with this project. No discussion. He could have worked for us everyday at his rates. I would have easily discussed the need for more money and paid him what he needed. Instead he’s walked off the job. Will not return calls or texts, and I am left with a half finished deck and no painting done. So unprofessional. Steer clear of this “pro”. He cannot be trusted.

Kelley was very responsive and communicated well with us. We had our large back deck re-done. There were some logistical issues that resulted in the job taking longer then it should have to complete but Kelley addressed all of our concerns and we are happy with the end product.

Came out to give an estimate very quickly. I had both my deck and swing set done. He broke 3 people to do the job. Pressure washed everything the first day, the stained both the 2nd day. Did a quality job on both and cleaned up well afterwards.

I hired Jay to build a pretty large deck with cable railings and other unique features that required a lot of precision, creativity and flexibility. Jay came through from start to finish. He was easy to work with, open to my ideas and responsive to our suggestions and even comments for changes. I'd recommend him without hesitation. Thank you Jay.

We had a great experience with 360 painting. They did the trim of our 2 story home as well as our deck. Gabriella ensured we were on the same page for what work was to be done and she communicated when I could expect them to arrive. The team arrived on-time and worked until the job was done. They even had a scheduled lunch time and I knew what to expect along the way. I would hire them again for any project!

Steve Roach saved my life! He responded right away to a job request we thought would a quick deck repair. Steve helped us uncover some wood damage underneath that would be unsafe. He talked us through and gave us options that would yield the best solution for the most manageable cost. See the pics that shows his work. We are happy to say, we have found a pro we will likely rehire for future projects. Take moment and check out Steve’s page that shows his awesome work. Then contact Steve Roach and let him save your life too! Thanks Dave

We hired Charles (Chuck) with Restoration Home LLC for deck and balcony repairs. Chuck kept our costs low and anytime he ran into a problem he would show us the issue and tell us how much in addition it would cost. But even the additional costs were fair. Chuck responded to every text I sent within mins. He and his guys did a fabulous job. I was nervous to hire anyone on Thumbtack because I had never used this service before and was afraid of being in a scandal of some sort. I’m so glad I took this gamble on Thumbtack, trying to find a reasonably priced carpenter. All reviews on this company are spot on except the one review by Jordan F. His review is totally false. Chuck is very friendly and Professional. I would hire him again for any job he says he can do.
