- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I will work with the pet parent to gather as much information as I can about the dog, and then perform an evaluation. This has a few steps. I will observe the animal and it may look like I am playing with your dog, but I will be touching ears, paws, tail, etc., and see how the dog reacts. I will also test your dog with a few scenarios. This provides me with the essentials needed to determine the type of training I will provide. I will then adapt the training if need be, and show the pet parent the commands so you will have a fantastically trained dog!
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been interested in animal training since I was 3 years old! I went to The Ohio State University and studied psychology and zoology. I've worked with whales and dolphins, dogs and cats, and everything in between! I joined the International Marine Animal Trainers Association (IMATA) and have attended the annual conference for years. Hundreds of experts get together and share the latest on training techniques, vet care, and even husbandry. All essential parts of animal care! I presented training on cownose rays and won 2nd place in 2009. I've also attended many training seminars where we learn advanced methods and how to deal with difficult cases.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I have wanted to be an animal trainer since I was very young. I read everything I could about animal behavior growing up, then went to The Ohio State University where I studied psychology and zoology. I volunteered at a wildlife clinic and education department for two years. I then accepted an internship in Hawaii working with dolphins and sea lions! From there I have taken jobs in aquariums and zoos all over the country until I finally came back home to be closer to family. I have trained dogs for over 5 years now and I love it!
