Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

Can I use digital payments to pay for wedding and event photography services?

As digital forms of payment and money transfer are becoming more popular, wedding and event photographers are likely to use digital services. These include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more. As you search online for local wedding and event photographers, ask them if they accept digital payments and, if so, which ones you can use. And make sure to have a strategy in place for safe social distancing.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

When should you take newborn photos?

Few styles of portrait photography are as tricky as newborn photos — the unpredictable infant is always in charge! The best way to ensure a successful photo shoot is to work with a local newborn photographer within the first two weeks of the baby’s life. Some photographers even work with hospitals to offer newborn sessions within a day of the baby’s birth. But newborn photographers usually recommend scheduling a shoot during the baby’s first two weeks of life, while the baby is still sleepy and relatively cooperative, especially for posed or studio shots. During this time, babies are easier to swaddle in blankets and dress in hats or headbands, and, because they often nap or nurse, can be staged with various props or be cuddled by their parents. For casual photos, most newborn photographers recommend shooting within the first six weeks of a baby’s life. Lifestyle portrait photography is more flexible and doesn’t require the baby to cooperate with multiple poses or props.

How much do photographers charge for family portraits?

Family portraits are a great way to mark the passage of time, create lifelong keepsakes and have gorgeous-looking photos for your annual holiday card. The national average cost for hiring family photographers ranges from $150 to $200. Pricing can range higher depending on where you live, length of the photo shoot, the number of edited photos you request, and the background and reputation of your family photographer. Before hiring, make sure you understand their fees up front. Ask how many finished images are included in the quoted price and whether you will receive all the photos taken (not just edited photos). Ask whether you’ll be able to download digital photos or if you’ll have to print them or purchase digital copies through the photographer. Here are some average examples of family photographer pricing:

  • $175 for a one-hour studio session in Kansas.
  • $200 for a one-hour studio or outdoor session in Georgia. Includes two outfit changes, access to an online gallery, and about 200 high-resolution, edited digital photo files on a DVD, with permission to print.
  • $400 for a one-hour outdoor session in Southern California. Includes 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online or via CD/DVD.
  • $425 or more for a one-hour outdoor or in-home session in Illinois. Includes more than 50 professionally edited images, online access and print release.

How much does a baby photography cost?

Portrait photography provides parents with lasting images of the first whirlwind months of a newborn’s life. The cost varies based on several factors, including the length and location of the session, the number of photos provided, and the amount of editing and retouching the photographer does. The national average cost for baby photos is $150-$200. Some baby photographers charge by the number of photos provided, typically ranging from an average of $299 for 20 high-resolution edited photos, to an average of $399 for 35 photos, to $499 for all of the images taken in a single session. Props and location affect the cost, too; an elaborate studio shoot with props and professional lighting may increase the cost to $600-$700 for 20-50 photos. Adding a second location or asking the photographer to travel can add $70-$250 to the cost of the session. Photographers may also charge extra fees for providing additional photos and DVDs, scheduling weekend sessions, and shooting siblings. Expect to pay at least a $50 deposit when you book a portrait photography session.

Working with Shawn was a blast. It was our first time getting professional photos done and he made the experience not only fun, but made it comfortable too. Shawn was very professional, and was very easy to get ahold of for scheduling. We will definitely be coming back to Shawn Harvey Photography the next time we need photos done!

Art is very professional. I could tell he has taking corporate photos for a very long time. He was expensive though. It was unclear that I would only get 1 touched up photo and that there would be an additional cost for more photos. I did feel a bit nickel and dimed. Aside from that the pictures turned out great and would recommend based on quality and professionalism.

My initial phone contact with Moreland Photography was positive, professional and reassuring. The event to be photographed does not occur, however, for over two months so I would have to wait until after that to give a full review.

Without a doubt Sam was the best choice for a photographer! He’s attention to detail and creative techniques is what makes him stand out more than any other photographer. He made us very comfortable and relaxed given the first time we met him was at our wedding. The way he works the camera is outstanding. Plus unlike other photographers, Sam was able to deliver an amazing portfolio of our wedding photos within a two weeks. If your looking for a photographer that is professional, a visionary, creative and likes to have fun while working then I fully suggest you give Sam a call. Very respectful and intelligent.

I hired Chris in May 2018 because I needed professional author photos that looked great and set a particular mood. Her package was not only a great value, but she was the first photographer to get back to me with answers to my questions. I quickly booked a photoshoot with her. The photoshoot was a lot of fun, and Chris moved me around the studio to get different poses under the perfect lighting. She was extremely friendly and professional. Within a few days, she sent me the gallery of photos. They were all so great that I ended up buying more than I'd originally bargained for. I plan on using multiple on various storefronts or even switching them out from time to time to let them all shine! I'm attaching photos that Chris took so you can see the various set-ups we used. If you are looking for a photographer to take professional photos of you, Chris is a fantastic choice. She's easy to work with and gets the job done in a short time. This was my first time hiring on Thumbtack and Chris made sure it was a wonderful experience. Thank you!

Jill was very professional and very patient. The photo shoot that I wanted, was not your traditional shoot. There were several obstacles that had to be over come. I was wondering if it would ever happen. Finally, everything fell into place. The photo shoot I requested turned out perfect. Jill is a great photographer, with great ideas. I am very glad I was able to get together with Jill for this project. I highly recommend her.

Dawn was very professional and worked very closely with us to make sure we had the best experience possible. She is very nice and a leasure to work with! We did maternity photos in the park. She was very considerate and really understood what photos would come out best. She was also very generous in the time and the number of photos she gave us. She really sat down with us afterwards to go through the photos and help us choose the best ones to get printed. Her printing was also excellent. We would definitely work with her again!

Candidly photographer in Cincinnati did a horrible job! The pictures were low quality, sometimes blurry, and dark. It was apparent early on that the photographer was inexperienced. She could not get the camera to work accordingly because it was not her camera. She told me that she borrowed the camera from her boyfriend. A camera she had never used before and was, of course, not familiar with its functions. I was very disappointed because the event was my mom's 70th birthday celebration and we wanted a photographer to help us capture the beauty and the magic of the celebration. What we got was garbage. Even my 6-year-old can take better pictures. I have used professional photographers every year for different events so I know what quality professional pictures look like and these were far from that. The photographer is a very nice and honest person (which is why I know all of this detail), but she is not a professional photographer. I felt that Candidly lied to us. They displayed the portfolio of the "Cincinnati Photographer" that was amazing when they responded to my bid for a photographer in Cincinnati. However, the photographer who showed up was, undoubtedly, not the person who took those portfolio pictures. It is sad to know that Candidly sent a novice to practice shooting pictures at our mom's 70th birthday. Our mom was very upset when she saw the pictures. I was very embarrassed that I hired Candidly. If there is such a thing as -1 star, I would give that to Candidly. Shame on you. You should give us our money back. This is not how you run a business. Unhappy customer from California.

Lena/ Triple Joy Photography was soo easy to work with and from the beginning of the project she was extremely understanding of my needs and requirements. While listening to my needs she also promptly gave me her professional opinion whenever it was needed. I think that’s why the photos came out sooo well. Will definitely hire her again!

Louise was so easy to work with. She suggested a couple of poses, which worked much better than mine. Her professionalism and skill was superb. Great value for the cost! . She also got back to me quickly about the appointment, was flexible about changing the time once and and got the photographs to me quickly. You can't go wrong with Erdeljohn Photography.

Angie photographed our wedding reception and we could not have been happier. Mike was wonderful to work with and the photos came out great! We hired him to take new headshots of our board and leadership, as well as others for our website. He came out with his own equipment, lighting and had a computer so everyone could view the pictures. The photos look modern, and everyone was pleased with how they turned out. He was very professional, reasonably priced and we’d hire him again.

I went to Connie for professional head shots. She was fantastic to work with! Kind, accommodating and her experience, research and natural talent for photography was very obvious! I am beyond pleased with my results. I did not feel rushed at all with her, it was clear that her main goal was for me to walk out pleased with the pictures. Her studio is very close to downtown Cincinnati and there was ample parking. I will be returning to Connie for any future photography needs!

Was a complete professional. Considering we had 24 people to wrangle. Picked a great spot for photos and even took some pictures we wanted even though he thought the sun wouldn’t work well ( he was right) but it was what we requested. On top of that he hand delivered our thumb drive later that evening. That may not be the norm but I was super impressed. I scrolled trough the photos and could not have asked for better quality. Definitely recommend for any shoot!

Tim did a wonderful job on my daughter's senior pictures. He was very professional. I didn't feel like he wanted to get us in and out. He took his time and got some awesome shots. Now the hard part will be choosing the photos. ?
