I really like how the job is done. The project is to renovate a sunroom into totally indoor space - including replacing windows, sliding door, siding, reenforcing the structure, insulation, interior dry wall. First, Jon is easy to communicate, flexible to accommodate client's needs and delivers very clean jobs. The work site is cleaned daily and very detail oriented. And also it is very reasonable cost wise.

He was professional, punctual, and patient with the process of helping to curate a space with very high ceilings, tricky lighting, and a combination of 20+ paintings, photographs, and antique mirrors in a variety of sizes and frames. And he made himself available to do this work at the last minute.

I have a very small lawn but it was overgrown and half the grass is brown. David did a great job getting it back under control and provided suggestions/quotes for the space instead of grass. He was very responsive with the quote and scheduling the work. He was punctual for our appointment.

Daniel's professionalism, expertise and good humor made my experience of completely renovating my nightmare of a basement into a beautiful and welcoming addition to my home. His skills and desire to make even the smallest detail one of perfection far exceeded any expectations or any concerns I may have had prior to beginning this large project. This space in my home, built in 1948, is now a true showplace for entertaining and relaxing. Daniel's initial estimate did not waver, even though many issues arose due to the age of my home and unexpected problems that were revealed during the work process. His cost was very fair compared to other estimates. Most importantly, his superior workmanship and the finished project has created a beautiful space of the finest workmanship. I highly encourage you to consider Daniel if you are in need of a highly skilled professional who takes pride in his work. Ten star tribute to Daniel !!!

We hired Steve to install a ventilation fan in our bathroom. The existing fan was not vented to the outside so it sucked moist air straight into a space in the wall. Steve came out to take a look and discovered we could install a fan in the ceiling so I could get one with a light that I really wanted. Steve also installed a new switch for the new light/fan and gave me two new outlets! My bathroom only had 1 in the vanity, so this was a BIG DEAL for me! Steve patched up all the holes from the wiring work and also the big hole from the old fan that was in the wall and it looks great, we can't wait to paint! The job was finished in a day and a half, quicker than we initially expected and he left our bathroom cleaner than when he started. I definitely recommend Steve for any work you need help with around the home, we will certainly be calling him again in the future. Thanks, Steve!

Russ was awesome!! He was the most professional contractor we have worked with since moving into our house, and his work is the highest of quality. He built us a deck, fixed our siding, and removed a pesky load bearing wall that was separating our living and dining rooms. Every time I walk into our new space, I can't help but smile at the work Russ did for us. We plan on calling him for our future projects, he's the only one we trust to do the work!

We originally hired Kelsha Flavigny to help repair some ceiling damage after our roof leaked, but he did such an amazing job that we asked him to complete a few other jobs -ranging from building a custom window seat to an entire bathroom remodel. Kelsha is a fantastic contractor. He shows up on time, cleans up the work area each day, and does excellent work. His pricing is fair and reasonable. In fact, we gave him more than what he asked because we thought he didn't charge enough for the amount and quality of work he performed. You can tell he is detail oriented and truly cares about the quality of his work. It's hard to find a contractor that excels in everything you need - but trust us, he will exceed your expectations. He's great with woodwork, flooring, lighting/electrical, drywall, plumbing and has the eye of an artist when it comes to designing custom spaces. He even helped us pick out paint colors for our walls and built-ins. I highly recommend Kelsha and his work.

My husband and I finally decided we wanted to remodel our bathroom and Mr. Cox surpassed my expectations with his sense of style, craftsmanship, unique creativity, and originality in his style. He was professional and completed the job earlier than our agreed upon date/time. He surprised me with his attention to details/color schemes/custom touch. We have hired Mr. Cox on four separate occasions; our bathroom remodel, interior painting of our 3 bedroom house including ceilings, doors, and trim), exterior paint on doors/shutters/mailbox/hardware and gutter cleaning/repair, and about a month ago he repaired and fixed our chain link fence around our backyard. He poured concrete for the posts, moved the fence in from our property line about 12 feet to allow more room for parking in the alley, and distributed fresh gravel in the parking space. He is a talented young man and we are glad to know him! Thank you, Darrell!

In a word, our yard and landscaping was a mess. There were overgrown weeds throughout our landscaping (probably a total of 400-500 square feet of space), as well as many weeds in both the front and back yards. Roland handled it all like a pro. He brought all the equipment he needed and even got extra help at the last minute when he realized the scale of the job. Together, two people cleared a significant amount of weeds in under two hours for a very reasonable price. While he didn't grab every weed, he got us back to a place where we can maintain a nice lawn. I would definitely recommend Roland to anyone who needs weeding services, and I intend to call Roland again if the weeds ever get that bad again!

The value was great. It took four months to get the job done due to personal problems of the contractor. I was unable to get them to respond for at least two months. They did return and completed the job, as well as going over everything making sure I was satisfied. Their work quality was amazing. They do leave their tools where they stop at the end of each day, which I thought was not neat. They said today when they left, the work has a one year guarantee. I love my fence! Thanks Thumback for your help.

He finished our basement, removed hanging cabinets and reinstalled out in our garage. He replaced our countertop, added new in-wall lights and back-splash. He was fantastic. 100%. Curt's prices were beyond reasonable. He knew we were on a tight/fixed budget and worked with us on options and creative ideas to make our space beautiful with out paying an arm/leg. We ended up having two lists. A must list and a wish list. If he found ways to nip and tuck on certain aspects he would tell us he could take on a wish list item. It was very fair. Regarding his work/professionalism, he always kept us in the loop, would take a few minutes every few days to give us an update. He was very professional, strong work ethic and very skilled in his craft. On top of all of this, he was tidy and left the house cleaner than before. Every day. We were blessed to find Curt and have recommended him to all our friends. :)

The pipes under my kitchen sink were leaking as well as the drain in the right side. The toilet was leaking and I had a clogged drain in the basement. The kitchen and bath jobs are complete 100% satisfaction. The basement drain however will need a specialist. Of course Mike had no way of knowing how bad it was until 5 hours later when he hadn't made any progress with it, but he sure tried his damnedest! Mike was very professional and efficient. He even gave me some tips and taught me some basics. I will use Decorators Choice in the future if the need arises.

Mike was very professional and I had him wire 2 dedicated outlets for a disposal and dish washer. It took Mike 1 hour longer than his estimated time but for working by himself and having to run wire in the crawl space above he did a great job. I have other wiring needs and will be using Mike again for sure.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

      • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
      • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
        • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
      • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

      What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

      • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
      • Toilet replacement: $75.
      • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
      • Faucet replacement: $125.
      • Garbage disposal: $75.

      Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
